We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

When Jesus and his disciples were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! We sing, we wave our branches, we shout 'Hosanna.' Then, we turn away, to go back to our old ways, our old lives, our old sins. But God is in the business of granting forgiveness and filling us with new life. Let us confess to the One who comes to fill us with grace.

Almighty God, we confess that we are not so different from those who welcomed Christ into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, yet later shouted 'Crucify him!' or remained silent in the face of injustice. We have betrayed you too, Lord Jesus, by our sins both secret and known. Yet you died for people like us, and you rose on the third day that we might be redeemed. For the sake of Jesus Christ, do not hold our sins against us. Forgive us, Steadfast God, and shine your face upon us. Help us to have the same mind as Christ, so we would know your promises; help us to have the same heart as Christ, so we might serve your children; help us to have the same Spirit as Christ, so we might go wherever you lead us. Sending Forth *THE BLESSING

We have gathered with the crowds crying Hosanna! Because even if we were silent the stones themselves would have called out. We have shared the hope for a world about to be changed, and then it changed. We have walked with another crowd. One that called words of scorn and condemnation. And now we follow the crowd as it leads out to the cross, and yet even as the world grows dark, we cannot lose hope. Because God is with us. God will be with us. Whatever happens. We are not alone. And so we watch the crowd and we follow...

Wednesday Night Meal

The meal on Wednesday, March 23, is Brixx and Fox’s Pizza. Join us for either 1/2 of a chicken sandwich and side salad from Brixx or a personal cheese or pepperoni pizza and apple slices from Fox’s Pizza. Meals are $6 each. Children's Consignment Sale

As you are cleaning out closets from the school year and transitioning into summer clothes, please consider donating your gently used children’s items to be sold at the fourth annual Children’s Consignment Sale, August 12-13! Circle Spotlight | UMW Circle 4

The United Methodist Women Circle 4 is open to women of all ages. This service-oriented group meets once a month on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Hull Conference Room at 5:30 p.m. They serve with Our Daily Bread and many other service projects. Later Book Group

The Later Book Group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in room 247. On March 23, we will begin a new discussion using Philip Gulley and James Mulholland’s book If Grace Is True. For seekers, for thoughtful Christians, and for the simply curious, Gulley and Mulholland offer a beautiful, timeless message of hope. We will start with the first two chapters. Senior Fun Luncheon

Senior Fun will meet this Thursday, March 24, at 12:30 p.m. The directors from Talmadge Terrace/Lanier Gardens, Magnolia Estates, Presbyterian Homes, and Iris Place will present an informative program on their various offerings and the costs of their facilities. To reserve a seat, contact the church office by 12:00 p.m. this Wednesday, March 23. In addition, a contest is underway to rename the group to clarify that the age range is "fifties plus." Easter Egg Hunt | Join Us!

Five Marks of a Methodist

Five Marks of a Methodist will meet on Wednesdays starting March 30 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and run until May 4. We will be looking at how a Methodist loves God, rejoices in God, gives thanks, prays constantly, and loves others. We will have a large group time and break into smaller groups for discussion. Pack One Pancake Supper | March 30

Pack One will be hosting a pancake supper on Wednesday, March 30, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Since it is a fifth Wednesday, this meal will take the place of our regular Wednesday night meal. Tickets can be purchased before and after worship services on March 20 and 27 as well as on Wednesday nights beginning March 16. Cub Scouts will be located outside of Hancock Hall and in front of the preschool wings to sell tickets on these days. If you purchased a semester Wednesday night meal package, you do not need to purchase a ticket for the pancake supperwe are already accounting for you! Our Roots in the Reformation

When was the Reformation, and where did it begin? What was Reformed? Were the people called Methodists once part of the Lutheran Church? Was King James a Lutheran, and did he really translate the King James version of our Bible? Was our founder John Wesley a Catholic or Lutheran priest? Christianity was born again by the efforts of a few inspired heroes risking, and sometimes losing, their lives proclaiming that salvation comes only by faith in God through Jesus Christ. Battle Plan for Prayer

The Battle Plan for Prayer, a new small group for men, is based on the popular movie War Room. This study begins with prayer’s core purpose, its biblical design, and its impact throughout history. Readers will be guided through scripture in the fundamentals of how effective prayer works, inspired towards a closer, more intimate relationship with God, and shown how to develop specific prayer strategies for each area of life. It should be your first plan of attack in all of life’s battles, not your last resort. If you want to experience the joy of mightily answered prayer, then it’s time to engage with God at another level. Great Day of Service and Celebration Brunch and Basket Auction

Come serve at the Great Day of Service before heading out to watch the Dawgs! Projects are family-friendly and will be located here at Athens First United Methodist Church and throughout the community. On April 16, we will gather for light refreshments and Holy Communion at 8:00 a.m. and then head out together to share the love of Christ. Childcare is provided for children age 4 and under. Music and Arts Week is a fun-filled three-day camp held June 1-3, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Children currently in Kindergarten through grade 4 are invited to come find hidden treasure.
