The Compass May 2019 Welcome Amber Lahtinen, our new Director of Children’s Ministry! Ambers’ favorite Bible verse is Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!” She says, “It always brings a smile to my face!” And that’s what happens to you when you get to know Amber! Amber began her ministry at Cross Winds in April of 2016 when she joined our nursery staff. She shared that her call stems from her growing up years when her Dad served in the Air Force. No longer able to stay connected to her church of origin in Ohio and living the military life of frequent moves, she found herself longing for connection, community and a consistent church home. Gratefully, Amber found that home at Cross Winds. With her husband Andy, daughter Lilyana (8) and son Jude (3), her dream began. She’s combining her deep faith with her lifelong love of children and sharing God’s love with our littlest ones. I first found Amber in our nursery. At first glance, I didn’t see her. But then, I stopped; listened; and finally -- looked down. That’s when I saw her for my first time. There she was…. crouched down, looking into their eyes, quietly talking while gently and lovingly caring for our littlest ones – right where they were – just as they were – loudly crying, laughing, playing. For me, it was a sacred moment. Now, she is embarking on the expansion of her call. She’s been overwhelmed and grateful for the positive feedback she’s already received following the announcement of her new role. She is excited to get to know the kids, families and volunteers who are part of our larger children’s ministry. Working together to serve within the church and our community, glorifying God in all we do fulfills her dream of celebrating and sharing God’s love. Contact the church office to connect with Amber or on Sunday mornings to introduce yourself, share your ideas and get to know her. Just remember – stop, listen, and look down if you don’t see her! General Conference Update As most of you are aware, a special session of the United Methodist General Conference was held in February to try to find a way forward in the face of perpetual disagreements over homosexuality. This gathering of United Methodist delegates defeated a plan (One Church Plan) to allow for more regional and local autonomy in the understanding of ministry with gay and lesbian persons. And so the result was a continuation of UM official policy that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching, that gay and lesbian persons cannot be ordained or serve in UM churches, and that UM churches are not allowed to host weddings for gay and lesbian persons. Last week the Judicial Council of the UM Church reviewed the constitutionality of February’s General Conference decisions. News sources have varied in their reporting of the Judicial Council’s decisions, but for the most part, the February decisions were affirmed and the restrictions on homosexuality remain in place. Some of the enforcement and punitive aspects were ruled unconstitutional. Since February I have been in conversation with many of you who are disappointed and angry with the UM official stance. And others of you have affirmed that you are on the more “traditional” side. But in all cases everyone has said we want Cross Winds to be welcoming to all people and we want all people to know and experience the love of God through Jesus Christ. Continued on page 3
“Memorial Day” Is it enough to think today Of all our brave, then put away The thought until a year has sped? Is this full honor for our dead? Is it enough to sing a song And deck a grave; and all year long Forget the brave who died that we Might keep our great land proud and free? Full service needs a great toll, That we who live give heart and soul To keep the land they died to save, And be ourselves, in turn, the brave! -Annette Wynne

You should know that although it seems like there is a finality to the decisions, there are now several conversations and movements underway to figure out how we will stay together or not stay together as local churches, Annual Conferences, and regions of the world. It may be that the United Methodist Church comes apart in the next few years, or it may be that it emerges in a new form with more local understanding of what it means to be in ministry in local mission fields. As we approach our own Minnesota Annual Conference (June 18-20) our Bishop Bruce Ough is working to coalesce various movements into a plan for consideration on how Minnesota can agree to stay together as an Annual Conference. And others around the world are working to figure out how a new organization of the UM Church might emerge and allow us to have some remaining connection and common ministry together. So much more is coming in the months ahead. Our Annual Conference is expecting to hold information sessions around the state in late May and early June. Our Board here at Cross Winds is extending an invitation to be a host site. I have no other information at this time – things are still unfolding. But we’ll try to keep giving timely updates. Prayer for the UM Church and all its leaders and members. And hold in prayer all those who feel unwelcome. Pastor Mike
WORSHIP NEWS Summer Worship Schedule begins May 26 Our summer worship schedule begins on Sunday, May 26, with one Sunday worship service at 9:30 AM. This schedule is in effect through the second Sunday of September.
May Worship This May we again will be looking at some favorite portions of the Bible that have spoken deeply to our hearts. And worship on May 19 will do the same with favorite songs and hymns. Here’s the lineup for this month: Sunday, May 5 “When You Are Crowded Out” Pastor Mike shares a message based on some work of Bruce Thielemann - a Presbyterian pastor and scholar – who was a mentor of sorts during his seminary training. When you feel disconnected and lonely, the story of Zacchaeus offers insight into finding our way by connecting to Christ. Luke 19: 1-9 Sunday, May 12 – “The Shepherd’s Voice” – On this Mother’s Day, Pastor Mike explores the deep love of Christ for each of us as we examine one of Jesus’ favorite descriptions of Himself as the Good Shepherd. John 10: 1-10 Sunday, May 19 – “The Songs Will Never Leave Me” Cross Winds’ Music Ministry presents a remembrance of favorite hymns with personal stories and fresh musical arrangements. Come and sing along. At 9:00 & 10:30 AM. Sunday, May 26 –“Sacrifices” In her Memorial Day weekend message, Pastor Shirley Duncanson looks at how we have been blessed by the sacrifices and love of people who have gone before us. What do their sacrifices teach us about how to live our lives as followers of Jesus? Psalm 8, John 16:19-22
Our summer worship schedule begins on this Sunday with one Sunday worship service at 9:30 AM.

Come join us for a unique and calming experience for our annual Tea! Among the aspects of the Spiritual Disciplines we've been exploring at church, are slowing, simplicity and celebration.
The objective of a Japanese tea ceremony is relaxed communion between host and guests. The ultimate aim is the attainment of deep satisfaction through silent contemplation and the drinking of tea. An authentic Japanese tea ceremony can last many hours. Our time together will be from 2:00-4:00 on Saturday, May 11. It is based not only on the etiquette of serving tea, but on the precise performance and aesthetics of the centuries-old ritual, the beauty of the utensils, the simplicity of the surroundings, and the social aspects of experiencing the ceremony with others. All of these elements coexist in a harmonious relationship with the ceremony. The tea ceremony they perform has been taught in Japan from generation to generation.
