Poverty Simulation Event Thursday, January 31• 6:30–8pm

Providing Hope as a Caring Community Sometimes a small thing changes the whole direction of your life. I got a phone call from an old friend a few months after my husband Tom died unexpectedly. My friend told me how much a grief group at her church, Southwood Lutheran, helped her navigate life after she lost her husband. She told me a new session was starting the next week and even offered to attend the first meeting with me. I did go. There on that Wednesday afternoon I was offered food to share and people that understood what I was going through. They were willing to tell their stories and listen to mine. Pam Dinneen was our facilitator. Pam welcomed our brokenness. Through that difficult time, we went from sad strangers to people who became a different kind of family. We cried with each other and encouraged each other. We knew the work of incorporating that grief into our new lives was ours to do, but we knew there was support from our group, our leader, and a broader group—the church of Southwood. The group that met for those 8 weeks still continues to meet for lunch and laughter and maybe a few tears every Wednesday. The church is still there to help me, from Drew and his merry band of leaf raking youth, to the beautiful Healing Prayer Service held on Wednesday nights every few months. I will always be so grateful for how people at Southwood show they care.
