Lights, Camera, Action! The southeastern United States has been newsworthy since long before Guttenberg, that German guy, came up with the nifty idea for a printing press. There were prehistoric eons and the Ice Age, of course, but after that, North America’s southeastern region was Creek and Cherokee Native American territory. In fact, Georgia’s “peach tree state” moniker actually came from a pine tree that stood at the confluence of two rivers and early European colonial settlers’ misunderstanding of the Creek word for “pitch.” The region’s unique cultural and historic heritage, the vigorously upheld doctrine of states’ rights, the institutions of slavery and racial segregation, and the legacy of the Confederacy (all of Region 12, plus “border states” Kentucky, Missouri and Maryland) during the American Civil War have helped give the Southeast its own distinctive flavor. Any Southern college basketball, football, horse showing or horseracing fan will quickly verify that sports, both recreational and professional, are big priorities in the Southeast. In 1990 the International Olympic Committee selected Atlanta, “the city too busy to hate,” as it bills itself, as site of the 1996 Summer Olympics. The Arabian horse community has similarly embraced the Southeast. Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Region 12, now 30 years old, encompasses AHA’s largest geographic region.

Extending down the East Coast from North Carolina to Florida and from Tennessee to Mississippi on the Gulf Coast, Region 12 is justifiably proud of its history and of the role it plays in the larger Arabian industry. Region 12 hosts several of the nation’s premier Arabian showcase events, the largest of which is its prestigious regional championships. Janet Searls has run the Region 12 Patrons’ Program for the past six years. An Arabian horse owner since 1978, she actually lives in, and has been active in, Region 15 in the past. Today she is also applying her considerable management, promotional and organizational skills to the efforts of her fellow enthusiasts in Region 12. “This show is the fruit of the work of a small nucleus of people who genuinely love the Arabian horse and love the sport of showing horses,” she attests. “The people, volunteers and paid staff, who run the Region 12 Championships, complement each other, bringing, as we do, broad-based expertise and knowledge for effectively planning and putting on a successful event like this one.” A North Carolina State Horse Specialist since the early 1970s, Glenn Petty has managed the Region 12 Show for the past half dozen years. Now retired from his N.C. State Horse Specialist role, he serves as manager of more than 20 horse shows a year and as official USEF Steward for the 2006 and 2007 AHA Youth Nationals.

The 2007 Region 12 Show “I was the Region 12 Show’s ‘landlord’ in the early 1980s, when it was held in Raleigh, N.C.,” Petty explains. “When the Perry, Ga., facility opened just south of Atlanta, so central to most of the states, it was an ideal site. Great facilities, a wonderful show committee and show commission, good numbers of horses, and the horses’ top quality have made it truly exceptional. Frankly, I enjoy watching the show as much as I do running it.” Petty isn’t one to toot his own horn, but exhibitors quickly discover that the Region 12 Championship Show is one of the nation’s best-run venues for displaying Arabians and HalfArabians in every division. Professional management, dedicated, capable volunteers, and several other important elements contribute to this excellence. “The first is the facilities,” notes Petty. “We built the facilities at Raleigh in the 1970s, but, as this show has grown, we outgrew the Raleigh facility’s stalls. The Perry, Ga., facility can handle 1,400 stalls. There are 1,200 permanent stalls, and this year, while we rented 100 temporary stalls, we were able to set them up under permanent cover. Arabian exhibitors tend to request a ratio of one tack stall for every one or two horses, unlike some other breeds,” he adds parenthetically. “There is a dressage ring and a main ring, and lots of work and schooling areas. A large covered, all-weather auxiliary ring is directly behind the main, indoor ring. This second covered ring has huge fans, which keep it comfortable, even in the hottest Georgia summer weather. There is also a huge, outdoor ring, and since we have moved the ‘over fences’ classes to Conyers, Ga., that area is available for schooling. Trail classes take place in another schooling ring at the end of the largest (400 stalls) barn, and after the trail classes are over that ring is perfect for schooling. Longeing rings—with very good footing—are along the back of the property, and Perry is in the process of building more barns, as well as adding another covered arena.” “Something exhibitors love about the Region 12 Championships is that our show secretary, Marilyn Norton, is super wellorganized. For example, after entries close, she contacts all the stables that bring 10 or more horses, makes appointments with each stable for the Sunday before the show, and has them come in for processing. This means that on Monday, when the smaller barns check in, there are no long lines and almost no waiting. “Let me brag on Marilyn a little more,” he continues. “She has her computers, her paperwork and her show office all ready ahead of time, so she and her team of three or four helpers can set up and tear down in almost no time. The night the show is over, she can tear down and pack everything, close out all accounts, get her financial reports ready to go out, have all received monies ready to submit, and close up shop—before midnight.” “Marilyn also puts a smile on everyone’s face with those dozens of homemade cookies she brings,” Dr. Mike Stewart, Region 12 Show Commission Member reminds Petty. “Scheduling is another significant factor,” Stewart continues. “Some shows have endless schedules with multiple classes of the same discipline in a row, like back-to-back youth classes, or amateur-open classes, which may involve the same horse. these and to vary the offerings (English, hunter, western, driving, etc.) which spectators appreciate. We fine-tune our schedule every year and try to plan each session to end at a specific time. We keep a time chart. Region 15 Director Marty Kleiner is our paddock manager. He and our Show Manager Glenn Petty are the best in the business, in my opinion. “Another big hit is the 20 feet x 20 feet inside projection TV screen we installed three years ago,” he explains. “At first, we posted judges’ cards, and then, someone suggested it might be worthwhile to sell advertising spots, especially stallion promos, which we limited to five per show session. The response to that was overwhelming, but there are only so many 30-second promo spots available per session, and people are practically fighting over them. We may have to raise our ad prices! That, I have to say, is a good dilemma to be facing. “We are experiencing tremendous growth in every division. In 2007, we had 70 dressage horses—that is horses, not just entries. We are also the first regional show to offer carriage driving. We have offered carriage driving for two years now and hope to see interest in this wonderful division continue to grow. “We moved our ‘over fences’ classes to Conyers, which is a great facility, because of the numbers of Class ‘A’ exhibitors in those classes we attract,” he explains. “We also have good numbers of beginners, and moving the classes to the Conyers ‘A’ show has encouraged those beginning riders, both youth and adults. The 2007 Region 12 Show have always held our working cow and cutting classes—any classes involving cows—at Starkville, Miss. Janet Carraway heads up that venue. Region 12 then sponsors championships for working hunters and working cow horses at various sites. “We also sponsor a week-long Youth Jamboree in July of each year,” Stewart continues. “As the name indicates, only juniors are allowed to compete. This four-day show schedule opens on a Wednesday, with screening to determine whether participants are beginners, intermediates or advanced. Alice Payne in North Carolina heads the Youth Jamboree. The first two days feature clinics and seminars, judging competitions, as well as a variety of other educational and fun activities. The weekend concludes with a JTR Class ‘A’ Show with academy classes. Region 12 also offers two scholarships each year to deserving young horse enthusiasts, perpetuating our emphasis on youth. While the Youth Jamboree initially was viewed as a last-minute qualifying show for Youth Nationals, it now is more geared toward beginning riders. “We actively listen to what trainers and exhibitors want,” he concludes. “This makes people want to come to our show.”

Tuxedos & Jeans, Champagne & Cold Beer! The first Thursday in May 2007 saw an exciting, new concept— actually, the application of an exciting, existing concept—come to the Southeast that may well transform this already burgeoning region into “the Scottsdale of the East.” That is the hope expressed by many of the show’s most ardent supporters, and there is every reason to believe that it will happen. They are off to a brilliant start. The first Region 12 Spotlight Stallion Services Auction was resoundingly successful. Held on Thursday, May 3, at the Georgia National Agricultural Center Pavilion in Perry, Ga., it raised an amazing $114,000 in stallion services sales. Fifteen of the 55 stallions, who services were sold, appeared in person to dazzle onlookers.

The 2007 Region 12 Show Ted Carson, trainer at Region 12 Director C.A. Butler’s White Oak, N.C., farm, observed, “This is about a program that will grow and become successful because people get behind it. It’s all about building a bright future.” Bringing this demonstrably wonderful idea to the Southeast was the brainchild of two enterprising Region 12 members well known for action, not just talk. Regular Scottsdale Arabian Show attendees, C.A. Butler and Past Region 12 Director Eric Wolfe, had watched Scottsdale’s Signature Stallion program soar to unprecedented heights. The two had brainstormed bringing the concept to Region 12 for several years, and by the November 2006 AHA Convention in Louisville, they had a proposal ready for presentation. Each ‘right’ owner is limited to two stallions, which will keep nominations to the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity a highly soughtafter commodity. We know that with the Scottsdale Signature Stallion program, stallion rights are sold out and owners of non-nominated stallions are offering big bucks to stallion rights owners to nominate their stallion—in addition to the stallion owned by the right holder—to that year’s auction. The high visibility and prestige are becoming priceless! “Our long-term goal is that this new futurity will grow to such an extent that it will become its own venue,” Wolfe continues. “It always will be the ‘Region 12 Spotlight Futurity’, but depending on its growth, it may eventually need to have a few days set aside of its own. Not everybody can get to Scottsdale. Our hope is that this will provide a more accessible, perhaps more affordable, opportunity for breeders and for amateur owner/exhibitors. “By 2010, when those 2008 yearlings are wearing leather, three performance divisions, hunter, western and English pleasure, will be offered with three open classes and three classes for amateurs. exceed $18,175 for each division. What a great incentive and vision for the future of Region 12!” Adds Spotlight Futurity board member Frank Galovic, who is also the current Region 12 and AHA Treasurer, “What many people may not realize is the possibility of multiple streams of income through this program, with four ways to make money at the Region XII Championships. First are the Spotlight Auction classes; second is the non-auction Futurity; third is the mare-centric Futurity; and fourth are the Sweepstakes classes. What does this translate into? Four ways to make money with the same horse, at one show!” Spotlight Futurity board members include Dan Regan, Committee Chair; C.A. Butler, Region 12 Director; Frank Galovic, Eric Wolfe, Region 12 Past Director; Janet Searls, Event Director; and committee member Frank Chisholm. “Anybody can participate in the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity,” Searls reminds us. “We reached out to the Region 12 people first, but the program was never conceived as being only for them. Everyone is welcome, and everyone is very enthusiastic. This first year’s auction was organized and staged by all volunteers!” “Our overall goals are two-fold,” states Committee Chair Dan Regan. “We intend to increase the breeding of quality horses by helping stallion owners publicize and sell their stallions’ services

The 2007 Region 12 Show and by helping mare owners create a greater market demand for the foals their mares produce. “The complete payout structure is described in our website. We would like to work toward transactional excellence,” he adds. “The necessary paperwork is complicated, so we need absolute financial transparency. People seem to be anxious to be part of the Spotlight Stallion Futurity. There has been nothing previously in the Southeast of this scale. Region 12 has carved out space in the show to hold the futurity program during the Region 12 Championships, but, as Eric mentioned, we hope it grows big enough to have a life of its own, as Scottsdale’s Signature Stallion Program is doing.”

Two Shots at the Brass Ring! “Check our website for complete details, but to explain a little further, the breedings sold in the 2007 auction were for 2008 stallion services,” says Eric Wolfe. “Those foals, who will be yearlings in 2010, will compete in the first Spotlight Futurity classes—two for fillies and two for colts. “Four classes in total?” he wonders aloud. “Yes, because there will be auction classes for amateur owners to show. We closed the

book in February 2007 for nominating mares already in foal for 2007 to nominated or sponsored stallions. That means that the first two yearling classes will actually be held in 2008 for those colts and fillies foaled in 2007. “The results of the foals produced by nominated mares will be shown in two futurity classes (fillies and colts) to be shown by amateurs to handle. This means that even if I or my family member isn’t a particularly great halter handler, I can nonetheless ask a really top amateur—who isn’t the owner—to show my filly or colt. “Like anything else, this program is only going to be as good as the people involved, but we have a truly devoted group of participants. Janet Searls and Dan Regan even attended the Scottsdale 2007 Show to familiarize themselves with Scottsdale’s Signature Stallion Futurity. We believe this attractive, prize money incentive program will encourage current breeders and motivate new breeders and amateur handlers. Also, as this futurity moves into offering 3-year-old performance classes a few years down the road, it has the potential to boost Region 12 Championship Show entries by 200 to 300 horses. Because of Sweepstakes and Spotlight Futurity competitions offered at Region 12, those 3-year-old performers will have two shots at the brass ring!”
