The Mt. Claret

Mountain SUMMER 2014

Christ Child Shrine project to break ground this Fall The building on our campus known as the “cottage” which is adjacent to the chapel, has served several purposes over the years. It originally served as living quarters, and later was the offices and meeting space for the Christ Child Society of Phoenix. In these last few years its use has been more as a storage space. We have explored several different uses for the building or for the space that it

occupies. It is in a very high foot traffic area that our weekend retreat groups transit throughout their weekend. Its location next to the chapel seems to lean towards a prayerful devotional space that uses shaded trees and quiet

prayer areas for reflection. The Christ Child name came on its own as we explored different options. We used the original building drawings which were called Christ Child building. The concept we have settled on is an outdoor space that promotes quiet and prayer, uses trees for shade, and has a statue of the Christ Child as its focal point. This devotional space

located in a prominent part of our campus, will enhance the spiritual beauty that Mt. Claret has. It becomes the first phase in a multi- phase master plan project that we hope to complete in the upcoming years. Mt. Claret’s facilities are outstanding in their function and adaptability. Our retreat groups easily configure the space to suit their individual needs. Our master plan projects will enhance and upgrade what is already a wonderful facility. Please stay tuned for more information on these upcoming projects. If you wish to help fund parts of this important project, please contact Mt. Claret and let us know of your intentions. We are also happy to help you with any questions about this exciting growth we plan to experience. Please call us to be a part of it.

Eagle Scout constructs new foot bridge to Stations of the Cross Chuck Dries, a high school student, pursuing his Boy Scout’s Eagle Scout Badge, selected Mt. Claret for his project. After exploring several options, Chuck settled on rebuilding a footbridge that was in need of replacement. It had fallen prey to termites and other wood rotting infestations and had become unsafe. The new bridge is made from treated lumber support beams and “Trex” composite deck material and is sure to last for several generations to come. As with all Eagle Scout projects, the scout is responsible for the design, planning, fund raising, purchase of material, and

Save the date! Mt. Claret’s annual community celebration Evening under the Stars is scheduled for October 11, 2014. This year as we celebrate and mark our 25th Anniversary of serving the Diocese of Phoenix, we have themed the evening as “Western Night”. This takes us back to the inaugural years of Evening Under the Stars and the atmosphere of a community gathering for a fun barbeque meal and an evening of friendship and fellowship. Our format will stay the same as we begin our evening with the silent auction in the conference center and

supervision of a work force to get the job done. Chuck did an outstanding job on all aspects of the project and we are grateful to him and his family for this gift. Chuck’s project is the third Scout project that has been done in past years. Andrew Polowski enhanced the All Saints Garden, and Sean Evan

refurbished a ramada and several picnic tables. All of these projects are a great benefit to Mt. Claret and those who come to the mountain seeking a quiet and peaceful experience with our Lord. All of these projects enhance that opportunity. Thanks to our Scouts for their support!!

Evening under the Stars / October 11 then move to the beautiful grassy area adjacent to the chapel for a dinner “under the stars”. We will have a very basic and simple program this year, recognizing our 25 years serving our diocese. We are thrilled to have John and Kay Sack as our honorary chair couple this year. John and Kay have both been actively involved in a variety of ministries and organizations at Mt. Claret. Their presence as our chair couple represents a commitment to this great institution that is like so many other good folks who have supported Mt. Claret during these past 25 years.

This year we have designated the proceeds from the evening to go to the construction of the Christ Child Shrine project (please see related article). We are in a position this year financially to dedicate these funds to a capital project as opposed to operational dollars. This is a result of the great generosity of our benefactors, an active and full retreat and meeting schedule, the support of our Advisory Council and the hard work of our staff. Please look for invitations to be mailed out the first week of Sept.

our facilities are in use on a regular basis. This puts a heavy demand on all aspects of building maintenance and upkeep. The generosity of our benefactors enables us to thoroughly address these issues in a timely way. Typically in America, retreat centers struggle to remain viable. The ones that are viable are either part of a religious order or are funded by the local diocese. Mt. Claret is neither. We are responsible for our own income and expenses. We are part of our diocese in some of the same ways that a parish is, but we are solely responsible for our income and expenses. Your donations and contributions go directly to supporting our mission of providing a peaceful and tranquil place where the faithful can come to be renewed, healed and inspired in our Catholic Faith. We cannot say thank you enough to all who have supported us and we look forward to the continued gift of your prayers and support.

he Fund for Mt. Claret, our annual campaign to support the operation and upkeep of Mt. Claret, exceeded our goal of $100,000. Thanks to the generous support of our benefactors and a stunning $50,000 matching donation, we achieved this great milestone in our history. Mt. Claret’s 10 acre property with over 60,000 square feet of building space is always in need of something – small and large. Some of our buildings date back to the 1940’s when the property was the La Fonda Fiesta Guest Ranch. Our newest buildings are 8 years old. The most common comment about Mt. Claret is “a beautiful spiritual place to encounter our Lord”. That sums up the experience that those that come here on retreat experience. Much hard work goes into the maintenance and care of our facility. Our busy, rarely quiet calendar guarantees that all of
