Express To Rendy Kerr, fashion is about highlighting a woman’s individuality. A woman of bohemian sensibility, Kerr has curated a space where anyone can find exactly what they’re looking for. From delicate jewelry to dresses, shoes and everything in between, her boutique, The Rancher’s Daughter, is an oasis of cool, eclectic fashion that suits any style. Emerging as a fashion tastemaker in the community, Kerr only started carrying clothes about six years ago. Started as a wine and housewares boutique, the fashion department at The Rancher’s Daughter grew out of Kerr’s own love for empowering women. “The best part of my job is seeing a woman’s face light up when she finds something she loves,” Kerr expounded. “Fashion can truly help you to feel beautiful, and I have seen people come into their own when they find a dress or top that accentuates their inner beauty.” It’s all about making her customers feel good, and Kerr has always been an avid cheerleader for her friends, family and customers. Her most poignant advice is simple; you can pull off any trend! A resident of Montgomery County for more than 30 years, Kerr loves getting to know her neighbors and curating collections that they’ll love. In fact, when she’s out on a buying trip she often finds herself picking up pieces because she just knows they’re perfect for one of her return customers. “Never let the dress wear you, you wear the dress,” Kerr exclaimed, “When I see that switch happen, and someone owns their look I can see the confidence radiating from them. You define your style, and if you love it, you can rock it!”

THE PANAMA CANAL TODAY By Linda Bauer, author of “Capitol Hill Cooks” | Photos by Steve Bauer, co-author of “At Ease in the White House” The inter-oceanic waterway uses a system of locks with two lanes that operates as water elevators and raises the ships from sea level to the level of Gatun Lake. This raises it twenty-six meters above sea level to allow the crossing through the Continental Divide, and then lowers the ships to sea level on the opposite side of the Isthmus of Panama.
The Panama Canal is the culmination of the ingenuity, courage and stamina backed by the idea of creating a route that joined the Atlantic and Pacific oceans thus saving countless miles, dollars and energy by foregoing the circumnavigation of South America. If you like to learn while enjoying some magnificent travel experiences - the Canal is one of the world’s best places to visit. In 1880 the French began the first full time push to create an all water route through Panama. The financial troubles and horrific difficulties of disease, landslides and torrential rain make for some of the most interesting books and movies about this era and its amazing players. If you choose to cruise through the Canal, be sure to take advantage of the many movies and lectures, and do not miss the narration provided by their own personnel. The French cut is still visible and the history of their losses makes for a great read. Only three weeks after the independence of Panama in 1903, they were able to negotiate an agreement with the United States for the construction of the Canal which was completed in August 15, 1914. The valor and robustness of President Teddy Roosevelt plays a most amazing part in the story of overcoming huge odds. He was the first American President to travel outside of the United States to a foreign country while in office. The rest of the story leads to our present day situations as the United States managed the waterway until December 31, 1999, which allowed full operation, administration, and maintenance of the Canal according to the Torrijos-Carter treaties negotiated in 1977. The water raises and lowers the vessels in each set of locks and is provided by the water in Gatun Lake through gravity and poured into the locks through a main culvert system, located

under the chambers and also the sidewalls and the center wall. The Culebra Cut is 12.7 kilometers, while the narrowest section represents almost a fifth of the total extension of the waterway. This segment was excavated through the rock and limestone of the Continental Divide of the Isthmus of Panama. It generated enough material to have built 63 Egyptian pyramids! The Panama Canal was opened with the passage of the SS Ancon going from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean. On October 12, 1962 The Bridge of the Americas was first opened to the public, a truly magnificent structure. On May 12, 1963 the twenty-four hour operation began. One day in February 1968 a record 65 ships crossed the isthmus. On August 15, 2014 the Canal celebrated one hundred years of connecting the world and providing service. We have been through the Canal sixteen different times and even had a personal tour involving the opportunity to explore the machinery underground and a walk across the lock doors to the middle, which scared me to death due to the height and the low water on one side. I asked if there was any way to go back without walking across and the engineer laughed, replying yes, you can swim across like Halliburton! He paid less than a dollar to be the one and only person to swim the entire canal. I love to get into the pool onboard the ship and “swim the Canal” just for fun.
The stories of conquering malaria, making cities and homes for builders of the canal and facing all of the incredible problems are part of the intrigue and fascination for those who choose to cruise the Canal. It is by far one of the most amazing journeys and the chance to go ashore and visit the Embera Indians in their village, as well as a fishing trip on Gatun Lake, or a railroad trip to see the area and a visit to a market where the colorful molas - beautiful layered appliqués of colorful material are all part of the charm. Panama is a unique and interesting trip with a vast amount of information for those who choose to enjoy the Canal and all that it has to offer. The expanded route of the brand new and much larger locks will become a driving force for global trade enabling the largest ships to now traverse the Canal. Panama will consolidate its role as the most important logistics and transportation center in the Americas. The Expansion is the largest infrastructure and building project in the waterway since the actual beginning of the cut. In 2007 the work commenced for the third lane to accommodate the larger vessels and double the capacity of the Canal. Take the time to visit one of the most unique and fantastic places on the globe - The Panama Canal.

Fusion Academy Fusion Academy is a private middle and high school where all classes are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom. This unique education model was born over 28 years ago out of frustration with the status quo and the passionate belief in the power of positive relationships to unlock academic potential. Fusion’s school model isn’t solely about the smallest class size possible, it’s about helping kids flourish not only academically, but emotionally and socially, too. Many of our students feel they don’t ‘fit’ at a traditional school. That sense of not belonging can make school an uninspiring place to be. Fusion serves kids who aren’t flourishing in a conventional environment, and offers them a community where they feel connected, supported, and understood. This creates a perfect solution for kids who have mild learning differences or social anxiety, those who need a flexible schedule, and those who are gifted and need to be more challenged. One-to-One Works You can’t hide in a one-to-one classroom. You aren’t competing with 40 other students to be heard. You aren’t afraid to speak up or be wrong because it’s just you and the teacher. And there’s no possibility of falling through the cracks. Students and teachers spend their 50-minute class period together working through the material at a pace that works for the student. Our teachers work to first build trust with their students as a foundation for learning. We believe in the model of “love, motivate, teach.” Students aren’t going to care about the material if they don’t feel cared for by their teacher. A mentor relationship naturally forms, and these positive relationships are what makes Fusion work.

Beyond the Classroom Homework doesn’t go home. Yes, you read that correctly. All students complete their homework in one of our Homework Café® spaces on campus. Here, they have access to teacher help, and are kept accountable to finish their homework before leaving for the day. No more nightly homework battles! The Value of Fusion Every student’s path is different, and we partner with them to help them achieve their goals, whatever they may be. Many of our students go on to attend a college or university, while some pursue a trade school, gap year, or another option. We have post-secondary counselors available to help, and programs and courses to support students’ goals. While other schools may be cutting their art and music programs, we have a robust roster of electives for students to explore and pursue their creativity. We also have a wellness program that includes art and music, along with physical wellness and healthy habits. Students learn healthy self-expression and how to deal effectively with stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, body image issues, and social pressures. If you have a middle or high school child who isn’t thriving in their current school, you’re not alone. Connect with us to learn about upcoming events or schedule a time to take a tour at our Woodlands campus. The John Cooper School Nurturing a Love of Life, Learning and the World Around Us. The John Cooper School is proud to have grown with The Woodlands. Cooper is a fully accredited, independent, PK-12, college preparatory day school that is located on 43 acres that was set aside by Woodlands founder George Mitchell as part of his vision for a planned community located north of Houston. Named after renowned independent school educator John Cooper, the school opened in 1988 and has grown in both size and distinction to become one of the premier independent schools in the Houston area. Last August, Cooper began its 28th academic year with 1,232 students, breaking an enrollment record for the seventeenth consecutive year.
“From Curiosity to Wisdom.”
Small classes, personal attention, excellence in academics, the arts and athletics plus a dedication to community service, characterize a Cooper education. Cooper combines traditional educational practices with innovative programs to teach students to think, question, analyze, create, communicate, and take responsibility for their world. Students who make up Cooper’s diverse student body pursue a variety of interests. Over 75 percent play at least one sport and varsity athletes compete in the highly regarded Southwest Preparatory Conference. Extensive visual and performing arts offerings include unique classes such as 3-D visual arts and aerial arts. Students give back to the community in many ways, such as the student-led Habitat Project, currently building the eighteenth home for a local family and the Empty Bowls Project, that has raised over $90,000 for local hunger relief organizations. Facility growth on campus continues to enhance educational opportunities. The Rock Math + Science Center, that opened in August 2016, spans three stories and includes 50,000 square feet of science and math classrooms and laboratories, a computer lab, robotics classroom, outdoor roof garden and a 135-seat lecture hall. The John Cooper School continues to pave the way for students to go “from curiosity to wisdom.”

Quality Christian education that integrates all subjects with the Bible through proven and stimulating curricula for each grade level. Individual attention through small student/teacher ratios. Our qualified, dedicated, and experienced teachers are committed to the ministry of Christian education and provide a loving environment. Our teachers truly care about each student and will take the time to shepherd their hearts. Opportunity to build strong Christian character which in turn develops young people in terms of integrity, good citizenship and instills in them a good work ethic. Students are taught to apply themselves and find joy in fulfilling their various responsibilities. Preparation to grow into young leaders to meet the future God has for them. We seek to give students the tools of learning so they can seek wisdom and pursue godliness though their entire lives. A foundation to proclaim that all knowledge and wisdom comes from God, and that the universe around them is in harmony and agreement with its Creator. Students will be prepared to know what they believe and why, which will enable them to think for themselves and stand up for their personal convictions in the face of pressure. This teaches the students to get along with unbelievers and other Christians who hold different views.

The Met Gala has traditionally been the darling of the gala season. Its starstudded guest list and super exclusive cocktail reception and dinner party has been an annual event since 1946. Each year the event is themed, and stars and designers walk the red carpet in homage to the selected time period, designer or culture. The theme of the gala corresponds to a world-class themed exhibit that guests tour during the festivities. From 1975-76’s American Women of Style to this year’s avant-garde Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, each year is more fabulous than the last. Take a walk down the red carpet to see some of this year’s biggest hits.

SIMPLE STRAWBERRY LEMON CAKE INGREDIENTS 2 cups white whole wheat flour or gluten-free flour 1-½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1-½ tablespoons lemon zest 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or coconut oil, melted and cooled slightly 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 large egg whites, room temperature 1-¼ teaspoon vanilla crème stevia ¼ cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice ¾ cup nonfat milk 1-½ cups whole fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F, and lightly coat a 9”-round springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest. In a separate bowl, whisk together the butter, egg, and vanilla. Stir in the vanilla crème stevia. Tiered Tassel EARRINGS
Editor’s Note We used three shades of green to create an ombré look, but we think complimentary colors like pink, yellow and orange would look great, too!
MATERIALS Three colors of embroidery floss (one skein each) Ear wires
Needle and thread Stiff cardstock cut to 1.5 inches Round nose jewelry pliers
DIRECTIONS 1. Wrap one color of embroidery floss around your cardstock until you’ve reached your desired thickness for your tassel. Slide floss off of cardstock, and secure tightly at one end with a short piece of embroidery floss. Cut the opposite end, opening your circle to create a tassel. Repeat with the same color, so that you have tassels of the same color. Repeat with your other colors - you should have six total tassels, two of each color. 2. Use needle and thread to string together one tassel of each color. Repeat with second set of tassels. You will have two tassel tiers. 3. Using pliers, open the base of your ear wire, and secure around the top of one of your tassel tiers. Repeat with second set. 4. Enjoy your gorgeous new statement earrings!

MATERIALS Seed beads (we used multicolored) .5 millimeter braided bead cord 34 jump rings (9mm)
Round nose jewelry pliers Four colors of embroidery floss (one skein each) Stiff cardstock cut to 2 inches
DIRECTIONS 1. Measure cord to desired length. We used 26 inches. 2. Bead cord, alternating colors for a random effect. Knot each end to secure beads, leaving one inch on each end to secure later. 3. Wrap one color of embroidery floss around cardstock to desired thickness. Slide off of cardstock and secure end with a string of the same color. Cut opposite end in half, opening your circle to create tassel. Repeat with remaining three colors. 4. Using round nose pliers, open one jump ring. Thread through roughly four loops in the center of the top of one tassel. Close jump ring. Repeat with remaining three tassels. 5. String one tassel onto your beaded cord. Thread 10 jump rings followed by a second tassel. Repeat with remaining tassels. You should have 10 jump rings between each tassel. 6. Knot the ends of your necklace together, and trim excess. 7. Wear alone, or layer with other necklaces!

Tassel Wrap CHOKER MATERIALS One skein of embroidery floss Round nose jewelry pliers 2 jump rings (9mm)
Hammer and nail 2 yards of thick cord (we used faux leather, but you could use leather, suede or any other thick cord!)
DIRECTIONS 1. Cut cord to preferred length – ours measured to 5.5’, but yours may be longer or shorter depending on personal preference. 5.5’ was just long enough to wrap twice. 2. Cut a six-inch string of embroidery floss from skein, being careful not to unwind skein. Cut string in half so that you have two three-inch strings. 3. Secure each end of the skein with string. Cut skein in half. If you are using a standard six-inch skein, your cut will be right at the three-inch mark. 4. Using hammer and nail, punch a centered hole in each end of your cord, ½ centimeter from the edge. 5. Using round nose pliers, open each jump ring. Thread one jump ring through the top of one tassel. Thread jump ring with tassel through one hole at the end of your cord, and close jump ring. Repeat with second tassel at other end of cord. Show off your wrap choker!

PHYSICAL
SEASON
Sports seasons are approaching fast, and a critical element of any young athlete’s preparation is their annual physical. Not only will a physical help athletes to asses their strength and fitness, it’s also key to ensuring that they’re safe and prepared for all that the game has to throw at them. Students and young athletes can take advantage of sports physicals provided by physicians at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Willowbrook. In addition to standard pre-participation physical exams, ImPACT baseline concussion testing and EKG screenings (to athletes 14 years of age and older) are available upon request. EKG screenings can save lives, and are becoming more important as research and statistics are made available. Student athletes give their all to the game – from crack of dawn practice sessions to long afternoons spent after school honing their talents. Health should never be an after thought, and an annual physical is a great way to ensure that their health is as good as their game. For more information regarding physicals at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, call 281.737.2120.
