Privileged as I am to serve as one of your pastors, I have found encouragement in our congregation’s heritage of higher education. Since July 2014, I have been working towards my Doctor of Ministry degree through the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, taking one week of class twice per year. From January 28 through March 2, 2019 I will be engaging in a study leave which is in accordance with our United Methodist Book of Discipline. Every four years, a pastor is entitled to four weeks of continuing education/study leave. This is in addition to, not a part of, your pastors’ vacation, personal, and sick time. The leave that I will take is for the purpose of focusing on the research of and writing my thesis. My degree will be in the area of Leadership for Transformational Change. While I will return to worship and my pastoral responsibilities on March 3, 2019 I will continue in my final edits and revisions in anticipation of completion of my degree in May 2019. My leave has been supported and approved by my District Superintendent, Rev. Linda Middelberg, and by the Staff/Parish Relations Committee of Church of the Master. While I am away, Rev. Jennifer Casey will care for all matters of preaching, leading, and pastoral care. Her Sabbath will remain Friday, with Saturday serving as her day off. Our first class of commissioned Congregational Care Ministers, our Stephen Ministers, and the staff will continue to assist her in caring for the needs of the congregation. At the end of my study leave I will travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to attend the Special Session of the United Methodist General Conference. As an alternate delegate from West Ohio, I hope to support our Annual Conference's voting delegates and to gather as much information as I can to best lead alongside Pastor Jennifer in the season which follows the sessions’ adjournment. With the exception of travel for General Conference, I plan to remain located mostly at home, studying and writing hosted in another Westerville congregation. I want to remain present with my family, being a committed partner and parent. I ask your patience as I move around the parsonage and our community in allowing Pastor Jennifer to lead and serve. I will not be monitoring my church email account or office voicemail with regularity. I ask that you keep me and my family in prayer as we engage in this sacred season of study and work. I look forward to being back in ministry with each of you!

A NOTE FROM PASTOR JENNIFER
Be still and know that I am God.” - Psalm 46:10 After the hustle and bustle of December is behind us, January can often feel like a let-down. The build-up leading to visits with loved ones, exchanging gifts, preparing meals, and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ is intense. Going back to work, separation from family, and putting away the decorations is a reminder that the practicality of life marches on. It can be difficult to know what to do with our emotions and we often turn our energy to New Year’s resolutions. This year, as others around the world will be ringing in the New Year through parties and celebrating with loved ones, I will be at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, engaging in a 5-day silent retreat. During my time I will be completely disconnected from the world. I’ll be surrounded by silent Trappist Monks, beautiful scenery, and lots of opportunity to be still and hear God. It is an experience that I am anticipating with an equal amount of excitement and anxiety. As you enter into this new year, I pray the spirit of Christmas transcends any let-down you may experience. May the Light of Jesus Christ shine so brightly in and through you that you find time to be still and cultivate God in your heart. May 2019 be a blessed year for each and every one of you. ADULT DISCIPLESHIP & SPIRITUAL INFORMATION OPPORTUNITIES SERMON STARTERS - Join the preacher each Wednesday for an hour of casual conversation and Bible study. Each week we will cover the scripture passage for the following Sunday. If you have a favorite Bible, bring it along, however the preacher will have copies of the scripture lesson. This study is come as you can, so come for one week or come for every week. No pre-registration required, simply show up. Class meets Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in Wagoner-Hursh. New Member Classes are Coming! Are you thinking about membership at Church of the Master but want to know more before committing to the 4-week New Member classes? Please note this luncheon is optional and not a requirement for membership. Thursday Night Bible Study and Conversation Join together as we explore joy in the midst of an ever-changing and anxious world as we read The Book of Joy by Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. Join us each week as we watch a video from scholar Amy-Jill Levine and discuss the radical and provocative parables of Jesus. Class meets Sundays, January 13 – January 27 at 9:30 a.m. in Balcony Room 20. The Gathering Sunday School Gather together in January as the study focus is Adam Hamilton’s Christianity and World Religions. The class will meet weekly to watch a video and be in conversation surrounding the study resources. Class meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Middle Balcony Room. Seeker’s Sunday School Do you seek out a variety of tools for your spiritual formation? If so, then the Seeker’s Sunday School Class may be for you. This group utilizes a variety of methods for engaging in transformative spiritual exploration. You can expect traditional Bible studies as well as studying theologians and spiritual leaders. MISSIONS THANK YOU! Thanks so much to all who helped make both the 8th annual Progressive Christmas Concert and 3rd annual Soup for Shelter record breaking successes! First, thank you to our awesome choir led by Chris Bowling and accompanied by Tyler Domer, Pastor Jennifer, April Smith, Bev Freeman, Holly and Todd Piper, who served as our caped guides. Additional thanks to Martha Jagucki, Josh Flory, Neil Stutz & Frankie Exley for serving as our greeters and EVERYONE who purchased tickets and attended the events. The concert brought in $6410 (641 tickets sold!) and Soup for a Shelter raised $5142.37. In addition, there was $260 in donations for an estimated grand total of Ta Da.....$11,812.37!! (Estimated because we don’t know exact PayPal amounts.) FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS Thank you for continuing to support our neighbors in need through your donations of food and toiletries. You can make an even bigger impact by donating money instead of food items. Food pantries purchase items from Mid-Ohio Food Bank at dramatically reduced prices compared to what we spend at the grocery store. The same $1 spent at the grocery store on one can of soup could purchase an entire case of soup through Mid-Ohio Food Bank. If you’d like to give a monetary gift to one of the food pantries please indicate your intent on your giving envelope or check. EL PORVENIR UPDATE Only 37% of rural Nicaraguans have sanitation facilities. Thanks to the generosity of COM members in 2018, 27 families in the village of La Calera, Nicaragua are starting the new year with new latrines! With our monetary support, the people of La Calera were able to build double-pit latrines for each home. This system is sustainable, as a family can cycle through the two ventilated pits. By the time one is full, the second one is safe to empty out. In spite of the ongoing political unrest in Nicaragua, the work of El Porvenir continues to get done at near to capacity. The people of Corazon de Jesus in San Lorenzo are looking forward to building their COM-funded community wash station this month. There are 195 residents in Corazon de Jesus, on the edge of the town of San Lorenzo. Community wash stations are clean, concrete facilities where women can wash clothes without having to carry water or clothes long distances to streams. They also include 2 or 3 shower stalls where people can bathe in privacy -- a true luxury for rural people. Washing clothes and bathing with clean water also reduces the incidences of skin infections.

Church of the Master will send $5,635.81 to help families in many countries be more self- sustained. Our congregation will receive an ark from Heifer International as we reached the $5,000 level. TELECARE: Our Telecare team is in place to do the work of communicating with each church member about upcoming events in the life of the church as well as to do a check in, ensuring all are cared for. Learn and Grow With Us Every Sunday Morning! We offer several different ways for your child to learn about God and grow in the faith. Please join us! CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL IS GROWING! Come and be Part of our Community! We offer Sunday school for children aged 3 years to 5th grade. Three, four, and five year olds are invited to gather in the Movie Room where we will sing Bible songs together and then they will move downstairs to Room 8 where they will be taught by Erin Flory, Tiffany McGinnis, and Julie Porretta. Children in 1st – 5th grade gather in the Movie Room for singing and then move to Room 17 and are taught by Kay Thomas. Please join us! RAINBOWS AND DEWDROPS - A Gift for the Whole Family! Rainbows and Dewdrops are children's church programs held during the 11 a.m. worship service. Rainbows is for children in 1st through 3rd grade while Dewdrops is for 3 year olds Kindergarten. These programs allow parents the opportunity to worship without distractions while allowing their children time to fellowship and learn about God in an age-appropriate environment. All children are invited to begin the worship service with their parents, participate in the Children’s Moment during the service, and then to follow the teachers to the classrooms. Dewdrops is held in Room 8 downstairs and Rainbows in Room 17 upstairs.
We counted up to Christmas and due to your generosity we collected 25 boxes of food donations for the Westerville Area Resource Ministry. Due to a generous anonymous donor this also means that $625 was donated to WARM. Thank you for sharing with and caring for your community!

JOIN M&Ms ON THURSDAY EVENINGS! Music and the Master Ponders Our Presence with God! During December we focused on the gift of Emmanuel, God with us. In January we will look at the other side of that relationship, our presence with God. We will study words from the Bible that encourage us to spend quality and a quantity of time with God. Come and ponder Our Presence with God with us! M&Ms meets on Thursday nights during the school year. Our typical schedule resumes on January 10 at 5:30 p.m. We have Bible studies, children’s choirs, fellowship and dinner for everyone of every age. Children’s Chime Choir Session 3 Begins! Children’s Chime Choir is open for any child 1st - 5th grade who can commit to regular attendance during any or all sessions. The choir practices each Thursday evening from 5 - 5:30 p.m. in Room 20. Now is a great time to begin as Session 3 starts Thursday, Jan. 10, and concludes with ringing on Children’s Sabbath, March 3. The fourth and final session will begin Thursday, March 7, and will conclude when the choir rings during the 11 a.m. worship on Sunday, April 28. Join Us for Kids' Night In on Saturday, Jan. 5!
All children, 3 years old to 5th graders, are invited to join us in the Fellowship Hall from 5-8 p.m. on January 5. We will play, eat, and watch a movie together. The movie will be Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. Supper will be chicken nuggets, green beans, rolls, and apple cobbler (allergy free options will be available). The cost is $10 per child with a family cap of $25. Please let Kay Thomas know by 9 a.m. on Friday, January 4, if your child is joining the fun.

Your cards, calls, and prayers helped us make it through the difficult days we faced. As many of you know, my mom was an integral part of our daily family activities. Winter Jam! Saturday, January 19, Noon - 11p.m. Winter Jam is back and we’re headed to the Schottenstein Arena for a great evening of music. We will purchase VIP tickets because it lets us in early and guarantees seats where we can be up closer to the bands. Artists include Danny Gokey, Mandisa, Rend Collective, New Song, and Newsboy United. Cost of the tickets are $35 through January 6. After January 6th, cost will raise to $50/person. Through the use of current events in our culture and world we will look at how we as Christians can “LinC” our faith and the world around us. Middle School Youth (Blue Room) All 6th-8th grade youth are invited to join us on Sunday mornings. We will be looking at how we respond to our world and culture through our faith. THE 10th ANNUAL YOUTH CHILI LUNCHEON: Sunday, January 13 Join us after 11:00 a.m. worship for our 10th Annual Chili Luncheon. We’ll be serving some of the best chili in Westerville, chicken noodle soup, salad bar, and great desserts. Gluten Free & Vegetarian options will be available. The funds from this lunch will help defray the cost of the 2019 REACH Work Camp to Uniontown, Pennsylvania. We currently are looking at approximately 35 youth and adults planning to be a part of our Summer Mission Trip Experience.

CROSSROADS CAMPUS MINISTRY IS MOVING TIMES Sunday Evenings 5:30-6:30 p.m., beginning January 13 As we have listened to students and their needs for a community like Crossroads we are moving Crossroads to Sunday evenings to lessen conflicts with evening classes and other groups that meet on Monday nights. Lucy Kelly, the Campus Ministry Intern will be leading Sunday Evenings. We will also be offering a once a month dinner for Crossroads students.
