According to a tabulation of the National City Bank of New York, 28 chemical and drug companies have reported $135,551,000 earnings for the first nine months of 1944, compared with S126.64S.000 in the first nine months of 1943, a 7% gain. This compared favorably with earnings in other industries, which showed an average increase of 5.6% in this period, ranging from 27.5% in the petroleum products group to a 15.2% decline in the machinery group. American Viscose Corp. reports that the larger part of its decline in profits in the first nine months of 1944 is attributable to the higher federal tax rates to which the corpora­ tion was subject in 1944, 9 5 % as compared to 9 0 % . Profits for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 1944 were adversely affected by operating losses and initial expenses incurred in connection with carrying out a directive of W P B to convert facilities at two plants to the production of rayon yarns for the synthetic rubber program. Directors of Canadian Celanese, Ltd., have declared an extra dividend of 25 cents per share on common, in addition to 25 cents per share for the fourth quarter of 1944, payable Dec. 31 to stockholders of record Dec. 12. A dividend of $1.75 per share was declared on 7 % cumulative participating preferred stock for the three months from Oct. 1 to Dec. 3 1 , 1944. March 15, 1945 was set as the date on which interest for 1944 will be paid to holders of income funding rights of record Dec. 31.

Celanese Corp. of America directors have declared a dividend of 50 cents per share on common, payable Dec. 31, to stockholders of record Dec. 13. The three previous payments this year have been in common stock at the rate of one share for 70 shares held. The regular quarterly dividends on preferred were? also declared, payable Jan. 1, 1945. Clorox Chemical Co. has called a specia meeting of stockholders Nov. 27 to vote on a proposal to split the stock 3 for 1. Davison Chemical Corp. has placed its stocls: on a quarterly dividend basis with the declaration of a 25-cent payment. Payments of $1.00 were made June 1943 and June 1944. Directors of Lukens Steel Co. at their regular meeting deferred action on declaring a dividend on common stock for the fourth quar~ter of 1944, pending completion of finan­ cial records for the year. Three dividends totaling 75 cents per common share have been, paid in 1944, b u t the trend of earnings has t>een considerably below t h a t of 1943. MEead Corp. and subsidiaries report for 40 weeks ended Sept. 30 net profit of $795,120, equivalent to S0.64 on common, compared with. $768,419 or $0.59 in 1943. Ctias. Pfizer & Co., Inc., has declared an extra dividend of 40 cents a share on com­ mon:, in addition to the regular quarterly dividend of 35 cents. A n offering of 100,000 shares of $1.00 par common stock of Resistoflex Corp. was made Nov. 1, priced at $4.00 per share. Proceeds are "to be added to working capital.
