Elmer Gottschalk, faithful and long-time member of Trinity, died last month at the age of 92. At his funeral, I used as the sermon text Ps. 118:24: "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." This was a Bible passage that had a lot of meaning for Elmer; a source of encouragement for him for every one of his 33,667 days here on earth. (I didn't forget about the extra day during leap years!) Having lived that many days, Elmer needed reminding from day to day, as we all do, that life is a gift to be treasured and enjoyed. And Elmer would often do the reminding! The beginning of a new year ought to have the same effect on us, reminding us that each new day is a gift. Although in many respects January 1st is no different than December 31st, it's easier to become reflective on New Year's Day. It's like celebrating your 30th or 40th or 60th birthday. You don't feel any different than the day before, but you suddenly realize how all the 'days before' have added up. Time marches on, and we don't give it much thought - even taking it for granted - until it passes in large, measured chunks. Then we pause for a moment and, as if at a funeral, look back sadly and say, "My goodness, where did the time go?" Elmer's 'theme verse' reminds us to do this every day; thanking God and rejoicing each day rather than each year or decade, or in the case of some people, each lifetime. That doesn't mean we should nostalgically live in the past every night. But maybe we all could reflect more on each passing day, evaluating our use of time and gaining more appreciation for it. Time is just as much a gift from God as money; and in most respects, it's more precious. Why is it, then, that we so consciously handle our money, placing high value on every dime, but then let our precious time slip away without a second thought? I Table of Contents suppose we think, "there's always tomorrow!" 33,667 seems like From the Pastor pg 2 an endless supply . . . even to my 23,491 (that includes leap years!). DCO CORNER: I invite you to come to the next new member class! Some of the questions discussed in this course are:

How can we know there is a God? Can you know for sure that you will go to Heaven? Can you lose your salvation? Whose sins are forgiven and whose sins are not forgiven? If you are considering membership here at Trinity and you have not been confirmed in the Lutheran Church this is the “Adult Confirmation Class” required for membership. If you are transferring here from another Lutheran church I encourage you to take the class because Bible study is always an opportunity to learn and it helps me to get to know you so that I may assist you in becoming an active member. For those that finish this nine-week class and want to pursue membership here at Trinity there is three-week Spiritual Gift discovery process and then a new member reception on Sunday April 17th, 2016 that will give you the opportunity to publically declare your devotion to the fellowship here at Trinity. If you complete the class and you are not sure about membership there is no obligation to join. The first class is Sunday January 17th at 9:15 a.m. in the Large Classroom. If you have children between the ages of 3 years to High School they can be in their Sunday school class at the same time. Also, if you have need for the Nursery for younger children it too will be available. Current members of Trinity may want to take this class as a refresher on the basics of the Christian Faith from a Lutheran perspective. There is no cost or pre-registration necessary, just come on Sunday January 17th. The coffee pot will be on and I hope to see you in class! Duffy Engineering & Associates, Inc. Salt & Pepper Please join the Salt and Pepper group as we host Sarah Schmidt. Sarah is the current Mrs. Benton County International, she will be representing our community in the International Pageant in St. Cloud in March. Her focus is the awareness of grief and senior citizens. She will be here on January 19th at 6 pm with her presentation titled "Golden Tears - It's OK to Cry". It addresses not only grief at the loss of a loved one, but also such things as grief over things that happened in your past. This could be such things as the loss of infants, the loss of physical and/or mental capacity, having to leave your home, etc. As with all our activities this is open to everyone, no matter your age. News from Prince of Peace Lutheran School We are looking forward to some very special events in January! We also are very thankful to Trinity members for the very generous support you provide in so many ways which sends a loud and clear message that you, the members of Trinity, believe having a Christian Education ministry for children is important and have made it a priority. Thank you! We want to invite all parents of children who will be eligible for Kindergarten for the 2016/2017 school year (your child must be 5 by September 1st) to come to our Kindergarten Open House on Thursday, January 21st from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. You and your child will have the opportunity to meet Mrs. Gray (our amazing teacher) and tour both the classroom and school. Parents will also meet with Mrs. Gray and Pastor Dave to receive information about our program. Registrations will be received that evening, and those registering that evening will receive a $50 discount from the registration fee. Class size will be limited to 20 and registration will remain open until the class is full, at which time we will establish a waiting list. Our Preschool will also be having open houses at each of our 3 locations. The open house for Prince of Peace will be Tuesday, January 26th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The open house at Trinity will be the following Tuesday, February 2nd, again from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The open house at Holy Cross will be Thursday, February 4th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Finally, we will be celebrating National Lutheran Schools Week the week of January 25th-29th. We would love to have you stop by and take a tour of the main campus and help us celebrate all of the blessings of receiving a Christ-centered education. If you have any questions about Prince of Peace, please contact Pastor Dave.

Worship and Music Notes Epiphany greetings to all! I pray that each of you enjoyed a blessed and joyous Christmas with family and friends. Thank you to the members of Trinity for your gracious welcome. Ron and I feel like we're "home" again after 15 years! What a blessing it is to work with so many talented musicians in this congregation! Thank you to those who have shared your musical gifts (and will continue to do so) as well as those who have yet to be "discovered" (as I continue to get to know names and faces). Please let me know if you play an instrument or love to sing. I look forward to meeting you soon :) :) Singing His Praises, Ruth Immerfall, Contemporary Worship Leader 320-291-9293 [email protected]

Church Of The Week Homeless Ministry Hosted by Trinity Feb. 15 – Feb. 21, 2016 This annual community outreach provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless. In addition to providing overnight shelter in our Fellowship Hall for 25-35 people each night, we will be preparing and serving a community meal for 100 people at Place of Hope every night at 5:00pm. Many volunteers are needed; to drive the bus, prepare & serve meals and snacks. Also, hosts/hostesses are needed to serve 5 hour shifts for overnight security (Married couples or 2 men or 2 women). This is a labor of love as our “Social Ministry” fund will be used to purchase all the food. Would you consider helping to feed the hungry during our week? If you would like to donate, checks can be made payable to Trinity Lutheran Church and in the memo please note: “Social Ministry”. We will be having a “door offering” at both services on Sunday January 31st to support this community outreach. This is a once a year opportunity for us to show God’s love to others in need just as God has shown His love to us in Christ.

“More Than Enough” Planned Giving Stories for Christian Stewards Joe and Kathy worked for many years building up their nest egg for retirement. While they felt their savings and investments would cover their own needs, they wanted to make sure that their three children were provided for in the future. They met with their church's planned giving counselor to discuss their desires. Kathy: W e wanted to continue mak ing annual, overand-above gifts to our church. At the same time, I was concerned about sacrificing our children's inheritance. Joe: Our stock portfolio had appreciated significantly over the years. I wanted to pass these gains on to my family without paying a lot in gift or estate tax. The church gift planner told them about a way in which they could achieve their personal and charitable goals through a charitable lead trust. The trust would pay income to the church for a number of years. Then the full trust value, plus any growth, would go to their children. The plan would allow them to pass on substantial wealth to their family at little or no gift tax at all. It would also reduce the size of their estate in addition to helping to further their church' work. Kathy: I could see how this plan would be very helpful if the trust was funded with our stock. Each of our children would receive one-third of the trust assets in the future. At the same time, we would continue to make gifts to our church each year. Joe: T his would also give our children time to learn how to save and invest their future inheritance. So we set up a charitable lead trust plan that would begin paying the church income each year. The prospect of helping our children succeed in the future while also helping our church now made us pleased with our decision. Information and confidential consultation about planned giving options that might benefit you - such as a charitable lead trust - can be obtained by contacting either Mr. David Priebe, retired business attorney (612)508-4640; or Mr. George Miller (800)482-5022. Both David and George are Gift Planning Counselors for the MN North District - LCMS. . 7

Trinity High School Youth Group 9th-12th Grade We are excited to send 18 to the National Youth Gathering this summer in New Orleans! 15 students and 3 adult leaders will make the trip in July. Please keep them in prayer, as they prepare for the journey. The youth would like to thank everyone who purchased lefse in December. The lefse tasted extra special this year, as it was made with tender loving care by the youth. Special thanks to Shelly Stockinger and Sandra Busche for their leadership and patience! We will continue to sell pizza thr ough the middle of January. The fund-raising push is definitely on for NYG!! Stock up your freezer for when the Winter Blizzards hit. We need more fleece to continue the Christmas tradition of making blankets for the local shelter. Due to the overwhelming response to lefse ministry, we have moved the making of blankets to late January. Please help with a fleece donation by January 13. Excitement is increasing as we prepare for the National Youth Gathering. We have special bible study time on Sunday mornings between services to help ready ourselves for the trip. Service projects, speakers, bible study, concerts, etc. are all a part of the experience. Looking forward to growing in our faith. The theme for next year is “In Christ Alone.” Watch for your opportunity to help support the youth through the next few months. All 9th-12th graders are invited to join us in the youth room on Wednesday nights from 6-8pm. Bring a friend. Polar plunge is coming in February. We will be going to Lutheran Island Camp for this event in the last weekend in February. Make sure you are connected to the youth leaders via media of your choice.
