The University of the District of Columbia was well represented at Athgo International’s (Alliance for harnessing global opportunities) Sixth Global Innovation Forum at the World Bank headquarters in Washington DC. Athgo was started by Dr. Armen Orujyan when he was 24 years old. The three-day event built upon Athgo’s Constructive Entrepreneurship model and 4-Pillars to Success behavioral framework, which has four goals for the participants and young entrepreneurs. They are:    

Build core business skills and provide direction on how to start, build, and manage a startup; Facilitate collaborative creation of approximately 20 new commercially viable enterprise concepts that are financially sustainable, eco-friendly, and display measurable positive communal impact; Improve the success and scalability of the proposed ventures; and Extend their reach to global resources by employing a free online startup development environment.

The three most promising startup concepts received innovation grants (seed funding). There were 200 young entrepreneurs and college students from around the world, with forty countries represented. The students engage in intelligent innovation discussions and exercises, including working in pre-assigned teams to develop commercially viable and constructive concepts. The top three teams received grant money to pursue the concept. Representing the School of Business and Public Administration were Daniel Williams, Anabel N. Oyana, Naeem Wynn, Mohamad Hassan, and Noluthando M. Kossi. Dr. Wayne Curtis attended as an Observer. Anabel was on the winning team, which received a $3,000 grant from Athgo, and another $10,000 commitment from an entrepreneur in the audience. Anabel’s team product was medical chewing gum (functional chewing gum). Congratulations Anabel!! For more information about Athgo International, click here .
