F O B some years t h e N e w York So­ ciety of Electron Microscopists, with headquarters a t t h e New York Academy of Sciences, 2 E a s t 63rd St., New York, has been rendering a service t o its specialty through t h e Bibliography Sendee. T o keep t h e Bibliography members informed a b o u t new develop­ ments within t h e service a n d t o permit discussion of various problms b y mem­ bers, a newsletter will henceforth b e issued quarterly. T h e first one follows in p a r t : The International Committee on Elec­ tron Microscopy. T h e UNESCO a p ­ pointed an international committee of ex­ perts; we were fortunate in having a visit paid to us by its distinguished chairman, Professor Bodo von Borries, Dusseldorf, Germany. This name, synonymous with vital pioneering work in the development of the electron microscope, must be famil­ iar to every user of the instrument. D r . von Borries felt very strongly that t h e Bibliography supplies a basic need of the present day research scientist, whose time does not increase proportionately with the amount of literature being published. "Since work in electron microscopy is spread over many nations, we were un­ fortunately forced t o realize t h a t investi­ gations which had been carried out in one country at an early date and in detail were either repeated later in another country, or else did not stimulate any follow-up for a very long time, simply because the re­ sults failed t o become known. This represents a delay in progress by the at­ tendant misdirection of valuable man­ power. This delay could be avoided by the exchange of data made possible by the Bibliography." He therefore pledged his full support. T h e speed and efficiency of t h e whole project depend to a great extent on mini­ mum delay in obtaining publications, and a real service could be performed by each national society by insisting on prompt submission of references or reprints t o NYSEM. International Membership. Our mem­ bership has passed 250. An earlier survey indicated that 17 countries were repre­ sented, among them being Austria, Bel­ gium, Canada, Denmark, France, Ger­ many, India, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom of Great Britain, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela. At a time when membership was 191, a survey of the field of use of the electron microscopes and Bibliography showed that 57 were devoted exclusively to biological work, and 77 to nonbiological work only.
