Spain

It may seem surprising that Spain has more vineyards than any other nation accounting for 15% of the world’s total, but when you take a look at the land you can easily see that just about anywhere in Spain is perfect for growing grapes and making wine. It has all the basics, mountains and rivers rive rs are everywhere, and it’s almost entirely surrounded by water, Spain also is for the most part quite dry in climate and high in altitude. All the land depicted in a lighter shade is well over 1,500 feet above sea level and in many places much more. Some of the more well known wine regions are labeled above for your convenience.

Rioja Denominacion de Origen Calificada

The Rioja wine region occupies the greater part of La Rioja, one of seventeen autonomous communities that together form Spain, as can be seen in the dark area in the map to the right. The most prominent feature in the landscape is perhaps the Ebro River, snakes its way through the valley and continues on over the high plains of Aragon in the east before it reaches the Mediterranean Sea near the Priorat. The soil is largely sand, limestone and clay, with chalk deposits in the Rioja Alta and Alavesa sub*zones roughly between Logroño and Haro. The slightly warmer Rioja Baja to the right is largely dedicated to the planting of Garnacha. The mountains which lie along the north shelter the valley from the excessive rainfall and provide cool winds which help the vines retain desirable levels of acidity. Tempranillo is the principal grape variety used for red wine in Rioja. Garnacha, Garnacha Mazuelo, Mazuelo and Graciano are traditionally used in blending. The Traditional Style is lighter bodied with fine tannins and floral aromas brought on by the American oak barrels used for ageing. Modern Style is full bodied with firm tannins aged in French oak for shorter periods of time for a more concentrated and powerful wine. R. Lopez de Heredia Traditional – R. Lopez de Heredia, established in 1877, is Rioja’s most renowned and iconic winery. Their wines are single vineyard designates and the ageing regime is long and meticulous, 6 to 10 years ageing in American oak barrels, and another 6 to 10 years ageing in the their cellars after bottling. Navarra Denominacion de Origen

The Kingdom of Navarra and the Basque people have a shared history. In antiquity the area was home to the Vascones, the Basque people, and it was much larger. They resisted against the Romans, Visigoths, Franks, and Moors, until the 16th century when it was reduced in size and divided between France and Spain. To this day the Basque remain along the Pyrenees Mountains populating the adjoining provinces in France and Spain. Situated between Rioja and Bordeaux, it’s not at all surprising that the wine styles of Navarra are influenced by the two famous wine regions. Their creative use of both the classic grapes of Spain, Tempranillo and Garnacha, Garnacha and the major French varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is the foundation of a new distinctive style for red wine. It is worthy to note that Bodegas Magaña sources their root stock from the same nursery that supplies Chateaux Pétrus. The expression of Garnacha in the southern Navarra is part of a wider growing area for the grape which extends into Aragon. Cabernet Sauvignon Blends 290

Ribera Del Duero Denominacion de Origen

Ribera Del Duero is just a couple of hours drive north from Madrid onto the highlands of Castilla y León. The region covers an 80 mile stretch along the banks and the surrounds hills of the Duero River. Near the river there is alluvial soil, sand and clay. Further away from the river the soil is marl, chalk, and limestone. Some vineyards seem white due to the chalky soil. The climate is continental with hot, dry summers and extremely cold winters. However, summer temperatures drop considerably at night because of the altitude, allowing the vines to cool and rest. This prolongs the ripening process allowing the grapes more “hang time” to draw up the minerals from deep down beneath the ground. The principal grape is Tempranillo, Tempranillo known locally as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País. País Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Merlot and Malbec are allowed in blending where those grape varieties were already planted before the wine region was officially established. Bodegas Vega Sicilia « Valbuena » (Village Name) Bodegas Vega Sicilia was founded by Eloy Lecanda in 1864. He was the first to introduce Cabenert Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec to the region. However, it wasn’t until 1914 that the acclaimed Unico and the Valbuena wines became available. The extensive oak ageing process lasts from 5 to 10 years. 238

Toro Denominacion de Origen

Toro is located along the Duero River a bit further west of the Ribera Del Duero wine region. The vineyards along the banks of the Duero have alluvial soil, but further away from the river the soil tends to be dry and sandy. The climate is continental with long, hot, dry summers and shorter cold winters. The principle red wine grape is Tinta de Toro, Toro a variation of Tempranillo that over time has adapted to the hot, dry climate of Toro. It yields smaller berries and thicker skins that its Tempranillo counterparts in the Ribera Del Duero and Rioja. This leads to a deeper color with a more intense aroma and structure than the Tempranillo found in other regions. Very old vines are common here because Toro escaped much of the phylloxera scourge that ravished the wines regions of Europe 100 years ago. The soil is dominated by sand and gravel which made it difficult for phylloxera, tiny aphid like insects, to travel across the land and attack the trunk of the vine. Bodegas Numanthia-Termes Bodegas Numanthia* Numanthia*Termes of the Toro region cares for some of Spain’s oldest vines, some 135 years old. The Termanthia is a complex, full bodied wine which pairs wonderfully with Lamb chops. 191

Bierzo Denominacion de Origen

Bierzo is situated in the north western corner of León along the Camino de Santiago, the Saint James pilgrimage path, where it shares a border with Galicia. The prominent grapes used for wine are Mencia for reds and Godello for whites. Mencia is typically oaked and quite powerful in Bierzo, unlike its counterpart in Galicia where the Mencia is typically made with less alcohol and is much lighter.

Galicia Galicia is home to five wine regions, the most popular of which is Rias Baixas known for its crisp Albariño white wines and found scattered along the fjords on the western Atlantic Coast. Further inland are Ribeiro, Ribera Sacra, Valdeorras, and Monterrei wine regions also known for their white wine. However, red wine is also produced in a style that is light and low in alcohol with firm tannins and crisp, refreshing acidity. Red wines from these areas are typically made with the same grapes as in Bierzo, Mencia. Mencia Included below is Raul Perez’ “Bastion de la Luna,” a light bodied red wine from Rias Baixas made with a blend of native grapes, Caino, Loureiro, and Espadeiro. Vinos Tintos de Galicia 80

Priorat Denominacion de Origen Qalificada

Located near Barcelona, Priorat is a rugged wine region about the size of Houston inside the beltway. It’s dotted with small hill top villages connected by roads that switch back up and down and around the terraced vineyards with hairpin turns. There are nine villages that make up the Priorat. Each wine is designated by « Village Name ». Harvest in the Priorat is done exclusively by hand, and some vineyards are so steep that the workers harness themselves with ropes and safety gear. The soil of the Priorat, a jumbled mix of granite, blue slate, and quartz schist, is called Llicorella because it imparts an aroma of licorice to the wine. The climate is quite warm, so hot in places that the grapes run the risk of being sun burned. North facing slopes are preferred in such places and hill tops are often avoided. The traditional style Priorat wines are made with old vine Garnacha, Garnacha and Cariñena, Cariñena but Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Merlot, Merlot and Tempranillo planted in recent years are often used to create a modern style blend. René Barbier René Barbier, Barbier, is main instigator of the Priorat movement during the late 1980’s. His vineyard, “Clos Mogador”, is situated in the village of Gratallops. He studied at the University of Bordeaux and apprenticed at Chateau Petrus. 195

Alvaro Palacios Alvaro Palacios, (See Rioja,) also apprenticed at Chateaux Pétrus before joining René Barbier in the Priorat project. He acquired his first vineyard, Finca Dofí, in 1990. Then in 1993 he located what is now regarded as the crown jewel property in Priorat, a precipitous, northeast*facing Garnacha vineyard on well*drained schist that had been planted between 1900 and 1940. Alvaro named it L’Ermita, for a small chapel, or hermitage, that sits atop the hill. 87

Montsant Denominacion de Origen

To offer a Houstonian’s perspective, Montsant is the size of Harris County except that the area inside the beltway is the Priorat. When these two wine regions were being organized just 25 years ago there were those who argued in favor of forming just one region, but others argued against it. They are similar in many respects, they’re both dotted with small villages on hill tops with roads that meander around them, but the hills of Montsant are not as dramatic and pronounced as those found in the Priorat. Harvesting in the Montsant can be done by machine in many cases which lowers the cost of production. The soil called Pinyolet is somewhat similar to the Llicorella of the Priorat, a mix of granite, blue slate, and quartz schist, but it’s more gravelly than rocky and the aroma of licorice is less pronounced. Wines are made with old vine Garnacha, Garnacha Cariñena, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon 91

Penedès Denominacion de Origen

Located near Barcelona, Penedès has always been considered one of Spain’s premier wine regions, mostly known for its Cava sparkling wine, it accounts for 95% of all production, it is also highly regarded for its fine Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Merlot, Merlot and Chardonnay. Chardonnay Penedès produces a wide variety of wine styles. It’s rugged landscape offers diverse climate conditions and geological settings. The region is divided into three sub*regions largely distinguished by altitude and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. Baix Penedès is by the coast and the Penedès Central accounts for most of the production in the region, but the Alt Penedès is where the finest wines are produced. It’s highest in elevation and furthest away from the Sea making it drier and cooler which provides higher acidity and longer ripening time. The selections below are all single vineyard, estate bottled wines and are among the finest renditions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Spain. Peter Sisseck’s wine (see Ribera Del Duero) from the Catalunya D.O. is included here as well. Jean Leon 101

Vinos de Pago Castilla La Mancha Castilla La Mancha is one of seventeen autonomous communities that together form Spain, as can be seen in the dark area in the map to the right. The wine region that goes by the same name covers an area about half the size of the entire autonomous community and is the largest wine region in the world. The majority of its production is dedicated to Airen, the most cultivated grape in the world. The Airen wine is an unassuming white with unremarkable characteristics whose main purpose in the industry is to make spirits by distillation for the fortification of sherry and brandy. Still, Castilla La Mancha is home to many wine regions, (9 DOs and 1 VdlT,) diverse wine styles and grape varieties, and quite a few Pagos, Pagos (8 of the 14 named,) introduced as Spain’s most recent creation, an estate that is a wine region unto itself, somewhat equivalent to the Grand Cru in France. Levante Castilla La Mancha In Spain, Lavante refers to the Mediterranean coast, the autonomous communities of Valencia and Murcia principally. The term “Levante,” stemming from the Latin which means “to rise,” was used throughout history to refer to the lands of the eastern Mediterranean. It was also called the “Levantine Coast.” Today Valencia and Murcia offer excellent wines made with the Monastrell (Mourvèdre) grapes. They are bold wines with intensive oak treatment and striking acidity due to the high elevations not far from the coast. Also included are a few selections made with the Bobal grape, a native variety from area which extends a bit into Castilla La Mancha. Monastrell 145
