Pope Benedict XVI, passionately dedicated to the New Evangelization and missionary vocation of the Church, announced a “Year of Faith” beginning October 11, 2012 and concluding on November 24, 2013, the feast of Christ the King. In this special year believers around the world are called to renew their commitment to the faith that is “always the same, yet the source of ever new light.” In proclaiming the Year of Faith, Pope Benedict said: “The renewal of the Church is achieved through the witness offered by the lives of believers: by their very existence in the world, Christians are called to radiate the word of truth that the Lord Jesus has left us. Reflection on the faith will have to be intensified so as to help all believers in Christ acquire a more conscious and vigorous adherence to the Gospel. Knowledge of faith opens a door into the fullness of the saving mystery revealed by God.” The door of faith is always open for us. It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace.

The CATHOLICISM Study Program answers the Pope’s call to an increased reflection on our faith. The series demonstrates what Catholics believe and why, vividly highlighting the Church’s global culture, and the incomparable beauty of its art and architecture. CATHOLICISM is a 10 part groundbreaking documentary series created and hosted by Fr. Robert Barron, rector and Professor at Mundelein Seminary in Chicago. In this DVD series you will travel with Fr. Barron to more than 50 locations in 16 different countries, illustrating how the Church has proclaimed the good, the true and the beautiful for two millennia.

CATHOLICISM equips Catholics to radiate the truth of the faith by providing a multidimensional experience: watching and listening to a DVD, then answering questions for understanding and application in a small group setting.

Many Catholics do not know what the Catholic Church teaches. Others practice a “cafeteria Catholicism” choosing what parts of the faith they will follow and what parts they will ignore. Some profess the Creed but confine its influence to the hour spent in Mass. This has led to what the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council warned against: “the greatest error of our age, the separation between faith and life.” Next Lent Saint John Vianney parish will utilize the CATHOLICISM series to open the “door of faith” and urge all parishioners to “walk through” by participating in a small group study. Inspired by Fr. Barron’s series we will open our Bibles, wipe the dust off our Catechisms and reacquaint ourselves with Catholic teachings and tradition. Led by a facilitator each small group of 10-12 participants will view a 45-50 minute episode in the series then enter into a discussion fueled by guided questions especially designed for each episode. Group leaders will have the option of hosting the series either in their homes or on the Church grounds. Child care will be available for those gathering at Saint John Vianney. If you are interested in serving as a small group leader or joining a small group please call the number, or email to the address, noted on the back of this brochure.
