Eagerly Desire…Prophecy Really? January 6, 2013 Text: 1 Corinthians 14:1 (p.960) ___________ ____________ – despite the abuses of some and the strangeness to others – is key to our lives as His followers. (Jn. 10:3‐5) I’ve discovered you can’t really follow Jesus and not have people – even people you love – not think you to be a bit odd. Maybe it is why Jesus‐followers are called ____________ often in the Bible. There are times when “____________________________” will seem weird or odd to “_____________________________.” One of the ways God speaks – a way I’m confident He wants to speak even more – is through ___________ ___________. In the Bible this is called prophecy.
Prophecy is _____________, not _____________. The thesis of 1 Cor. 12 is basically this: every Jesus‐follower is gifted by God for service and _______________ to others. We are not gifted the ____________ but are purposefully gifted differently just like different parts of our physical bodies have different functions but are necessary for our bodies to be sound and strong. Every ___________ ___________ we read about in the Bible represents what we will all do at some level in our Christian lives. We simply may not do it as often or as well as those who have that gift.
We will most often serve and _____________ in the area where God has gifted us. But God will also use us in these other areas as well, including prophecy. Prophecy is simply ___________ _____________ not just for ourselves but for other people. Most often it is simply to _____________ and bless another person. It is why Paul points this gift out. 1 Cor. 13 was first written to address the ___________ ______________ in Corinth. People were basically using their gifts to try to show themselves to be really spiritual. The issue in Corinth was that they needed to love each other more deeply and fully – just as we need to. They needed to focus their spiritual gifts not on demonstrating to others how “spiritual” they were but to bless and _______________ one another. Because of the nature of Old Testament prophets, most of us think any kind of prophecy will be about judgment, about God letting everyone know about our mistakes, failures and ____________. Prophecy revealed in the New Testament is primarily about ______________ _________ and encouraging, not tearing down. It’s often just a ___________ __________ – most often not really dramatic to the one sharing it – just a word which confirms something God is saying or helps us through a struggle. We, the people of God, are in desperate need of encouragement. I think most of us ___________ to know we are really hearing God rightly. It’s one of the many reasons we need each other!
