Beginning Lent 2018

Read Matthew 4:1-11 New International Version (NIV) Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. ————————————— Suggested Questions: • This is the week when our church and churches all over the world enter into a season called Lent. It is based upon the experience of Jesus when he was led out into the wilderness without food for 40 days to be tempted. It’s a time that reoccurs every year in which we take something away (like fasting with food) and/or we take something on (like spending more time in Scripture or in prayer). What do you know about Lent from your own history? • When you read the story from Matthew’s Gospel about when Jesus’ was tempted in the wilderness, what are some things that resonate with you about his experience? How does Jesus respond to temptation? • Jesus had an intimate relationship with Scripture, meaning he knew where to go in moments of temptation. How would you describe your relationship with Scripture? • Jesus not only had an intimate relationship with Scripture, he also had an intimate relationship with God, meaning he knew how to talk to God. So here are some questions for you to consider: • Who are the people important to you in your life? • And how is communication an important part of those relationships? • How would you describe your relationship to God with prayer? • As we look ahead to Lent beginning this week is there anything that you want to consider to take on or to take away so that you can focus more intently on your relationship with God? • How can we support each other as a Growth Group during this season of Lent?
