ENGINEERING MARINE ENGINEER OFFICER The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) will give you a unique opportunity to develop your core skills as a Marine Engineer and broaden your range of experience. Where RFA vessels play a different role to the Merchant Navy’s, our kit reflects this – some of our kit will therefore be new to you. The RFA’s vessels are a mix of diesel-electric, slow and medium speed diesel engine propulsion systems. On some ships you will be Engineer Officer of the Watch, while on others, with Unmanned Machinery Spaces (UMS), you will be Duty Engineer for a 24-hour period as part of a rota. As a Third Officer you will be responsible for the availability, maintenance and repair of a section of the machinery. You will be mentored by the team leader and will in turn be expected to show leadership to the ratings who work with you. Onboard, you will be assisted by a highly professional UK Rating workforce who have been trained to support you in both the operational and maintenance aspects of your role. When repairs are required to ensure a ship stays on station, and meet the needs of our customers, your engineering skills will be vital. What we’re looking for We’re after someone who would enjoy working on a wide variety of ships – being part of a unique and varied programme in diverse regions. Different operations offer unique trips and we need someone who can be flexible and fast thinking to meet changing situations. It is essential you have good team working and basic leadership skills as ratings, and ultimately junior officers, will look to you for guidance. Being part of the engineering team you will require well developed written and verbal communication skills. Training The engineering skills you already have will be bolstered with training targeted to develop you in your role as a Third Officer in the RFA. This will include fire-fighting training at specialist Royal Navy training centres and functional training courses related to the machinery you will be maintaining, including any specialist military equipment. The service recognises this and offers to invest in your training and professional development with full financial support including paid study leave for you to pursue superior MCA Certificates of Competency. Pay and conditions You’ll earn a highly competitive salary, plus an extra RFA allowance reflecting our special status, which is paid monthly with your basic salary. We also offer a choice of civil service pension schemes with a high level of employer contributions to your pension fund. You’ll work for four-month appointments earning 84 days’ leave after each one and, as a civil servant, you’ll have access to welfare and family support including sick pay and special paid/unpaid leave and paid training. You’ll also benefit from a deployed welfare package, including satellite TV, and if your ship is operating in UK waters you could have opportunities for weekend leave and associated concessionary travel.

Promotion You’ll be chosen on merit subject to working hard and getting your tickets quickly and can progress rapidly through the rank structure to Second Officer and then First Officer. As a Chief Officer you will be responsible for the Marine Engineers and the smooth running of your department and as a Captain will lead the entire engineering department of the ship. As you attain higher MCA Certificates of Competency and advance to Second then First Officer, some of the RFA Marine Engineering department’s shore posts will become available to you. This will allow you to continue your professional development by gaining experience within the fleet’s operations and maintenance support organisations, building the foundations for your future success as a senior officer.
