Sermon.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2017

(continued)

Speaker: Buster Brown Today’s Message: Equipped to Fight the Good Fight of Faith Today's Text: 1 Timothy 1:18-19 “This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience.” 1 Timothy 1:18-19 equip /Ih-kwip/: to supply with necessary items for a particular purpose. “Equipping people/disciples to pursue Jesus Christ passionately as they impact the culture.” East Cooper Baptist Purpose Statement I. Entrusted with a charge, verse 18. A charge is a formal statement of a command or injunction to do something. II. By holding to the prophecies, you may fight the good/beautiful/useful warfare. Equipping involves the process by which I fight for my joy and usefulness in the kingdom of God. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 III. Retaining/holding to/fervently looking upon faith and a good conscience. *Holding onto faith means that Timothy was to comprehend and understand the glorious gospel of the grace of Christ and his finished work upon the cross. He knew that all the ungodliness of his life was covered by the shed blood of Christ. He was to rely upon Christ’s life and death, as the total answer to his sin before God. “The Puritans were in fact very deeply concerned about conscience, for they held that conscience was the mental organ in men through which God brought his Word to bear on them. Nothing, therefore, in their estimation, was more important for any man than that his conscience should be enlightened, instructed, purged, and kept clean. To them, there could be no real spiritual understanding, or any genuine godliness, except as men exposed and enslaved their consciences to God’s Word.” J.I. Packer, The Puritan Conscience, Puritan Paper, Volume 2, pgs. 237-238. (continued >>)

“My conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen.” Martin Luther, Diet of Worms, April 18, 1521 “So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.” Acts 24:16 “Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.” Romans 13:5 “Having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.” 1 Peter 3:16 Wage the Good Warfare with biblical verses to meditate on and memorize for the month of September. “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:2-3 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Discipleship is continually moving from a place of obedience, to being enthralled with the glorious goodness of the triune God. “And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’” Luke 5:5a “But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.’” Luke 5:8

equip•them GET SERVING WITH GOD’S PEOPLE

Questions for Discussion: 1. What is the “wage the good warfare challenge”? 2. What is the promise of 2 Timothy 3:16-17? And Psalm 1:2-3? 3. Why is it important to continually underscore faith (freely given/imputed) before dealing with the concept of conscience? 4. How do we build and maintain a good conscience toward God and man?

Your mobile devices are welcome! After the service we encourage you to share pieces of the sermon or worship on social media that you think others will find encouraging. Tag ECBC using #ecbccharleston.
