THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

BE MY PROTECTOR, O GOD, A MIGHTY STRONGHOLD TO SAVE ME. FOR YOU ARE MY ROCK, MY STRONGHOLD! LEAD ME, GUIDE ME, FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR NAME. cf. PSLAM 31:3-4

Jesus manifests the powerful, healing love of God by curing the leper (3) who was forced to live under severe restrictions by Jewish legislation (1). He turned to Jesus in his need and was filled with joy (Ps). We are called to imitate the healing and compassionate Jesus (2). FIRST READING — LEVITICUS 13:1-2, 44-46 The leper will dwell apart, making an abode outside the camp. RESPONSORIAL — PSALM 32 I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. SECOND READING — 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31 — 11:1 Do everything for the glory of God. GOSPEL — MARK 1:40-45 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.

PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of Leona Berens, longtime parishioner and grandmother of Amanda Berens. Leona passed into eternal life on February 2, 2018. PLEASE

PRAY for the repose of the soul of Evelyn Anderson, longtime parishioner and mother of several St. Joseph parishioners. Evelyn passed into eternal life on February 3, 2018.

T REASURE S T FROM OUR RADITIONS

Today's Gospel centers on the plight of a leper and Jesus' response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there's nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an official tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by "Molakai mule." There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien's beloved island mission. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark's Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great "secret" revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus "humbled" himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today's healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God's reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CRS RICE BOWL

Lent will begin this week with Ash Wednesday, February 14. This Lent our parish community will participate in Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving. The basic plan of CRS Rice Bowl is to eat a simple meal once each week in Lent and give the money you did NOT spend on a normal meal to fund CRS programs of relief, education, health and development. Use the LENTEN CALENDAR (folded inside the cardboard rice bowl) to enrich your Lenten journey. Pray as a family, reflecting on the role we each have to play in building up God’s one human family. Read the personal stories of people who benefit from the work of Catholic Relief Services. Prepare simple, meatless meals enjoyed by your neighbors in other countries using the weekly recipes in the Lenten Calendar. Give sacrificial contributions as suggested in the weekly reflections, or set your own goals for your personal Lenten sacrifice. Visit crsricebowl.org for more information. One dollar a day for 40 days of Lent means: 3 months of clean water for 4 families, 2 years of seed for a farmer, 1 month of food for a family. Members of the Social Justice Commission will distribute the 2018 CRS Rice Bowl with the attached Lenten Calendars after all the Masses next weekend.

IMMIGRATION NOTICE

TO

U.S. CITIZENS OR LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENTS

Catholic Immigration Services issued this statement Feb. 2 regarding President Donald Trump’s family immigration proposal. “We suggest U.S. citizens who have parents, children 21 years of age or older, married children and siblings who do not have legal status in the USA to file an I-130 petition on their behalf, so they can start the process to immigrate to the United States. We suggest to Legal Permanent Residents to file an I-130 petition on behalf of their unmarried children who are 21 years of age or older. The above are some of the categories that President Trump is considering to eliminate within family petitions.” For more information and to see if your relative qualifies for the immigration benefit, call Catholic Immigration Services in Little Rock at 501-664-0340 or 479-927-1996 for Springdale.

MARY’S WAY OF THE CROSS

A beautiful tradition continues during our season of Lent. On all of the Fridays of Lent, we will have the Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m. The March 2 and 16 services will use the prayers called “Mary’s Way of the Cross.” Father Tyler asks that these prayers be said by the women of the parish. Since there are 14 stations plus a closing, we can have up to 15 different women, of all ages, reading at this services. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to meditate on the sufferings of Christ by walking along with Mary as she followed Jesus! We all know that when tragedy strikes our lives that our women friends are the ones who are there for us. We should be there with Mary as she follows her son on His way to His crucifixion. We welcome volunteers to read one of these prayers. It would be great for all women from 9 to 90 to be part of this. It is a beautiful way to celebrate the Lenten season. If you would like to participate, please contact Teresa Baker at [email protected] or 479-713-9144 no later than Friday, February 25.

Our parish has been present for the Fayetteville area since 1884. Parishioners who have gone before us ensured through their work, prayers, and financial support that future generations would have a Catholic home here in Fayetteville. Now it is our turn to preserve our heritage and leave a legacy to future generations that includes a new church—a sacred space that gives God and our worship services the reverence that they deserve. On Sunday, February 10 and 11, the sec-

ond collection will be for the Building Fund Land Appeal. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Thank you to everyone that attended a Focus Group. The Core Team appreciates your input. Your responses will be invaluable as we begin work on the design of our new church. If you were unable to participate in the Focus Groups, you will still be able to give your input. Please watch for the parish-wide survey that

will be conducted this Spring. 8
