THE CALVARY MESSENGER Calvary United Methodist Church seeks and invites all to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and our world.

Washed Anew A Choir Member’s Reflections After many years of singing in the choir, attending practices each week, and learning new music, I was firmly ensconced in all of the routines and felt “comfortable” in the known, the expected, the normalcy of choir participation. Then came the fall of 2010 and God’s Grace transformed me as my heart and mind were filled with renewed insights and unexpected joy in the uplifting power of many individuals coming together to proclaim God’s message through music. It was a busy and demanding schedule to say the least: November—“A Concert for God and Country” with the Evangelical Lutheran Church; December—Concert with Damascus UM Church in Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, then a Christmas cantata and, of course, Christmas Eve services. All of this was in addition to our regular Sunday music. I don’t have enough room here to detail all of the practices, the highs and lows, the organizational challenges of a myriad of music, papers, and schedules. But unexpectedly, as I went through the rehearsals I was deeply moved, not only by the music, but by the mental and spiritual satisfaction of the group energy and commitment that I felt all around me. “A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you” Ezekiel 36:26 All of us—singers, musicians, choir directors—were unified as we lifted up God’s message through music. We shared the glorious opportunity to reach beyond the often harsh and negative world and to stretch our hearts and voices outward and upward in the hope for God’s kingdom here on Earth. This is why we sing. What a priceless gift! What joy! Marcie Baker

Who is Jesus to you? SERMON SERIES:

Are people Christian because of a title they carry or the way they live their lives? Is it enough just to accept Jesus Christ as Savior or does he expect more of us? Does being a Christian affect the way we live, view life, view others? Pastors Dunnington and Schlieckert will offer sermons on how our Christian faith can guide us in marriage, family life and parenting, singleness, money, conflict resolution, and serving people in need.

February 6 * Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany Pastor Dunnington will preach “...how I live my life as a single person” February 13 * Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany Pastor Schlieckert will preach “...how I understand and live out my marriage” February 20 * Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany Pastor Schlieckert will preach “...how I view money” February 27 * Eighth Sunday after the Epiphany Pastor Dunnington will preach “...how I resolve disagreements”

* Sunday morning worship at 8:30 and 11:00

Rock. Counselor. Prince of Peace. The Way and the Life. The Bright and Morning Star. These are just a few of the many ways Jesus is identified in the Bible. Each of these identities captures a distinct aspect of the life and ministry of Jesus - and a distinct aspect of what it means when we say, "I am a Christian." During Lent, our pastors will look at the question "Who is this Jesus we worship?" And in turn, we ask: "Who is Jesus to you?" The worship committee would like to hear from 40 members willing to answer that question in a short, devotional format. The collected answers will be published during lent as a daily devotional. We will distribute it as a daily email and make printed copies available to those who would like to follow along. You are encouraged, but not required, to find a verse of scripture to accompany your thoughts. We can publish the devotional with or without your name as you prefer. If you would like to help, please contact Kyle Bostian at 301 371 5411 or [email protected], or the church office. If you are not familiar with the daily devotional format, there are two excellent resources for your reference. One is the Upper Room devotional, which we offer in print form at the church and is available online at www.upperroom.org. The other is the Adventure Daily Devotional, published by the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the UMC. It is available at www.bwcumc.org/content/ adventuredailydevotional.

IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER To find out if Calvary services or activities are cancelled due to severe conditions, please tune to radio station WFRE/WFMD or WAFY. We will attempt to place a message on the phone (301662-1464) and on the calendar in the featured event scroll bar found through our website: http://www.calvaryumc.org Normally, evening activities will follow the action taken by Frederick County Schools.

Zaccheaus was a rich but hated man. He was an outcast and considered by his fellow citizens the same as a robber, murderer and a harlot. As a “sinner” he recognized that his life was not what he wanted and sought out Jesus only to see him – not to be saved by him. But when called by name, Zaccheaus gladly welcomed Jesus into his home. What Zaccheaus demonstrated was radical hospitality and risk-taking in mission and service. We think of Zaccheaus’ repentance and profession of sin and self-guilt as the key to the story. It is; but, the way he demonstrated his repentance in offering to give a great deal of his wealth (one-half) to the poor (extravagant generosity), went beyond what the Law or what Jesus asked. It was what God asked of him. Finding honesty and the strength of the truth within himself, he pledged to pay, in addition, four times the amount if he was found to have cheated anyone. Zaccheaus is a man we could model ourselves after. If we ask ourselves what we can do with our excesses, we too can be called the son of Abraham.

In the UMVIM Theological Statement (from the VIM handbook) it informs us that, “we are called” and “we are sent” is at the foundation of our faith. The scriptures are full of stories of people who responded to a call, and were sent on a mission for God. As you know, last year the small island of Haiti endured a devastating earthquake. Over the past several months, several of Calvary’s Mission’s members have attended special training and corresponded with UMCOR representatives for missions’ opportunities in Haiti. Missions have assembled a team to answer God’s call to serve. Nearly 180 VIM response teams are scheduled to deploy to Haiti in 2011, and Calvary’s VIM team is one of them. Our Mission trip to Haiti requires lot of planning, logistical effort (airfare/ lodging), coordination with UMCOR, ground transportation, and medical vaccinations for team members to combat potential health risks while helping the people of Haiti. During the next several months, Missions will host several fundraisers to help off-set our costs. Supporting the fundraiser is a great way to indirectly help the people of Haiti, and be a part of our VIM mission. We hope you will support the fundraisers, and/or make a donation directly to the trip. We have a unique opportunity to help the people of Haiti. Putting faith in action is at the very heart of our Christian calling. Ray McKinnon Mission Chair

Registration for the 2011-2012 school year has gotten off to a wonderful beginning. However, there are opening remaining in one of the three year old classes as well as a four year old class. Anyone interested in attending an open house orientation should call the school to arrange an appointment. During the month of December the families of the Weekday School participated in the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ program. Parents were able to fill a shoebox with an assortment of items suitable for either a boy or girl depending on their choice and chose the age group they preferred. The large number of donations and positive response from the parents was truly gratifying. The school also collected new knit caps/hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks for young children. These donations were given to needy families within the Frederick community. We had many large bags filled with these awesome donations. In January a special presentation was offered to the families of the Weekday School by Mrs. Barbara Howard, Child Care Choices/MHA. The topic of the presentation was “Practical Tips for Parents of Young Children with Challenging Behavior and Helping your Child Cooperate with Requests.” The Weekday School is committed to assisting parents with everyday challenges and concerns typical of children in these early years. Once again the Weekday School is pleased to partner with the church’s Family Life group in collecting items for the ‘Love Boxes’ that they assemble and distribute to shut-ins at this time every year. I along with all our staff extend our sincere appreciate to all the families of the Weekday School that volunteer to participate in the community outreach activities throughout the school year. The Weekday School always welcomes visitors and would love to have anyone interested in stopping in for a visit. Happy New Year!!!

Member to Member I would like to thank all those who helped green and de-green the church this past year. I know everyone has a busy schedule during the holidays. Please know how much it is appreciated that you took a little time to help make our church home beautiful, and then to clean it up and store everything. The more helpers, the quicker the work is done!
