Inside Door Creek February 2011 Volume 3 - Issue 2 A Personal Invitation, by Brian Rust Show of hands: how many of you came to Christ or to Door Creek because someone invited you? Personal invitation is at the heart of our communications strategy for Door Creek North. We’ve developed several tools to get the word out about the church, and to personally invite our friends, neighbors and coworkers to join us. Three postcards will be sent in late January and early February. The first “You’re Invited” card has a few details and room for a personal note. Hundreds of these cards are available for current attenders to sign and send. The second “You’re Invited” includes a note from Campus Pastor Bob Goodsell, and will be mailed to all households in a five-mile radius of DeForest High School. The third card is about the Survival Mode series of messages set to begin February 13. This card will be sent to the same addresses a week before launch. Posters about Door Creek North are available for attenders to put up in local stores and other public places. Recent changes to the doorcreekchurch.org web site guide people to all the basic information they need about Door Creek North in DeForest and Door Creek on Dominion Drive. Pastor Bob is sending a letter to the DeForest Times editor about our mission to serve their community. A brief press release is going to all news media in northern Dane County. An ad about Door Creek North will appear weekly in the newspaper from early February through early March. Signs will direct people to the school and into the right rooms on Sunday mornings. A general brochure and information cards on our ministries will also be available on-site.

Of course none of these efforts will be effective without persistent prayer. As we’ve been memorizing, “pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ ….” Whether you plan to attend Door Creek or Door Creek North, here’s a perfect opportunity for you to put that into practice. Contact the church office, or stop by the Information Desk after a service for copies of the materials.

Have you ever thought about why you give? What is it that motivates you to give an offering?

Stewardship Column

Which of the following explain why you give? •

Habit- “I am used to giving.” When I was growing up my dad would place a quarter on the breakfast table for me and my three sisters to place in the offering plate.

I was trained to give, and it worked well--I have been giving ever since.

Guilt- “I feel like I have to do this and feel guilty if I don’t give.” It’s hard to believe but some of us grew up where everyone’s giving was published. Some had the experience of church leaders coming to their house explaining to them how much they were expected to give. Some give thinking it will gain God’s favor—in a twisted way giving becomes a way we control God—God I am giving you a lot of money……you owe me.

Obedience- “It’s what God teaches in His Word so I give.” Verses that speak of honoring God with our wealth, or bringing the whole tithe into the storehouse (Proverbs 3:10, Malachi 3:10).

Grace- “Because of what God has done for me I want to give.” The love of God that cost Him everything compels us to give. When the grace of God hits a grateful heart, the reflex is generous giving.

God loves a cheerful giver. A heart that is thankful for all that God has given starting with the cross of Jesus Christ to my health, my shelter, my job. Cheer helps us know that we have moved from duty to delight from feeling like I have to do this to I get to do this. May the luxurious grace of God move us to give and grow us to be generous givers.

Drum Clinic – February 7- 6:30 pm The DCC drummers and percussionists are holding a clinic, beneficial and open to all who play in a church setting. Topics vary with each clinic. To register, email [email protected].

February 12-19 is "A Heart For Missions Week." Door Creek shows its heart for missions by praying, thinking, sending, giving and going to serve and share God's love with others. We support missionaries and church partners locally and around the world in ministry together. Stop by the Mission Cafe to pick up a prayer sheet listing our missionaries, their location and the people groups they minister to in the field. Then, join us by praying for their ministry, their families, and the people they are reaching with the Gospel. We conclude the week with a visit from our friends and elders from our church partner, Los Olivos Iglesia. Oscar and Karla Chiquito, Armando Chiquito, and elders Ephraim Lopez and Reuben Gallina will be here Saturday, February 19 to participate in the 5:30 service. Come and share your heart for missions with our guests and in prayer. This Spring, Pastor David Kiamu will be here for a return visit! Pray for safe travels for our partners and blessed trips to the US.

Serving – It’s What We Do! Name: Brett Triebel Spouse: Lori Triebel Married: 14 years already! Children: Caleb-8, Ethan-6, Leah–almost 3 Where do you live: Sun Prairie Profession: Brett: Manufacturing Manager at American Packaging, Lori: stay-at-home mom How long have you been attending Door Creek? Since moving to Wisconsin in 2006. What are your favorite foods? We love pizza and Mexican food. (Lori loves anything she didn’t have to cook herself!) Hobbies: Now that the kids are a little older, we love to go camping! We especially like to go on long bike rides and hikes with the kids. Brett also enjoys golf and racquetball, while Lori prefers less strenuous activities like reading, watching movies and scrapbooking! Faithfully Serving: Brett: Upwards basketball, Financial Peace University, Kid Jam. Lori: MOPS, AWANA, Kid Jam. Both of us will be serving at the North Campus as Shepherd Coaches for Kid Jam. How did you get involved in serving? I have always had a heart for kids which I first put to use before even having children! When we started coming to Door Creek, I volunteered in the Butterflies Room since our boys were in preschool. Lori followed suit by serving in the Ladybugs room when our daughter was an infant. Being new to the area and to Door Creek we really wanted to get plugged in and start forming relationships. Serving God through children’s ministries was and is a win-win situation. We were able to meet needs here at church, while having our needs met through all of the wonderful relationships we’ve been blessed with! What do you like best about serving? Lori: For me it’s the fellowship!! I love coming alongside others in a common cause to not only serve God, but to serve others. And when I allow God to really work in me through my service, I always find that it brings me closer to Him! Brett: Kids grow so fast! I love being an eyewitness to the changes I see in their lives, whether it’s improved basketball skills, memorizing scriptures, or maturing in their faith. Why do you serve? Lori: First of all, God calls us all to serve. It’s one of the ways we prove our love for Him, and in turn He pours his love into us so that we can let it spill over onto those we serve! Plus, it’s fun, it stretches us, which always leads to growth, and it’s a good way to model Christ’s love to our kids! Brett: For me, there is a deep satisfaction in helping kids learn about Jesus. I didn’t have that as a kid, so I want to reach as many kids as I can! I also want to encourage others in their walk with the Lord. I remember all of the people who have done that for me in the 15 years since I became a Christian and I’m so grateful for them!

Why I Volunteer At Schenk Elementary School By Lynn Smith When I enter Schenk Elementary School each week, I feel at home. I have come to know the halls, some of the classrooms, and many of the teachers and staff. It wasn’t always like that. That first week of tutoring, I was nervous and feared I would be inadequate for the job. It had been so long since I had been around a Kindergartner. Would I be able to relate? Would they behave? Would I even be a help to the teacher? It didn’t take long before I realized that my fears were groundless. Mrs. Austin, the Kindergarten teacher whose class I have tutored for 4 years, is grateful for any amount of time I am able to give. The moment I walk into the classroom, the children beg to be chosen to go with me to the tutoring table in the hallway. Consequently, they are rarely a discipline problem for they know another classmate will gladly take their place. And should I ever need information to help me become a better tutor, resources and training classes are available. What compels me to become involved in Schenk Community Outreach and, specifically, to be a tutor, is the thought that I could be the key to that child becoming a successful student rather than one who fails. I have an image of each struggling student. They stand on a path overgrown with weeds and vines that can trip them up; a path indistinguishable. I am there to pull aside the weeds, to clear the way, to guide them through until they are able to do it themselves. And I DO get to see that happen. I see the happy smiles that come from finally knowing the sound for Y, something that has puzzled them for weeks, or from writing their name all by themselves for the first time. I see the confidence and excitement of mastering the sounds of the alphabet. I see these students, one or two years later, at Schenk’s bookstore (currently handled by Door Creek Church members) excitedly choosing books at their grade level.

Currently, Schenk has about half of the number of tutors needed. The greatest need is for Kindergarten tutors. If students can be brought up “to speed” during their first year of school, they have a much better chance for a successful school career. When there are 6 or 7 struggling Kindergartners in a class of 16 or 17, it is impossible for a teacher to give them the one-on-one help that is needed. If they do, the other 10 or 11 students aren’t being challenged. While tutors are a much needed commodity at Schenk, there are other ways to serve at the school. Some of these are: mentoring one child an hour a week, reshelving books in the Library or Resource Room (something that can be done after school hours), helping to supervise the cafeteria or playground, donating new or gently used books for the school’s very popular Book Kingdom bookstore, or collecting Box Tops for Education or soup labels that earn points for school equipment (collection boxes are found by the school’s front door or behind the Information Desk at DCC). My prayer for the students at Schenk is that by becoming successful students, the wonderful world that God created will be opened to them to fully experience and that, one day, they will desire to seek out their Creator. Someone once asked, “If Jesus was attending Door Creek Church, would you find Him volunteering at Schenk?” Mark 9:36, 37 says, “He took a little child whom He placed among them. Taking the child in His arms, He said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.’ I believe the answer to that question is a definite “yes”. For information on how you can get involved at Schenk (Door Creek’s “adopted” school) you can contact Lynn at [email protected].
