Nutrition Tips February is National Children’s Dental Health Month Say cheeeese! Nothing brightens the day quite like a smile! Help keep your child’s teeth (and smile) strong by encouraging them to eat school breakfast and lunch EVERY day. Children need to consume 3 to 4 servings of calcium each day to build strong bones and teeth, and fortunately IDEAs breakfast and lunch menus provide just that! Now grab a pen or pencil and circle all the calcium-rich foods you can find on this month’s menu! (Check your answers on the back!)

Nutrition Team Spotlight! IDEA has invested in highly qualified child nutrition experts to design your child’s school meals. It is important to us that your child gets a nutritious meal that fuels their brain and body. Come eat with us!

Meet the nutrition team: Keely Hawkins has a PhD in Nutritional Science. Sandra Meister is a Registered Dietitian. Elizabeth Molina has 16 years of food industry experience Daniela Villarreal is classically trained in Culinary Arts.

STRATEGIES FOR STRENGTHENING

BONES AND TEETH

Food for thought: Children who learn good eating and exercise habits by their preteen years are more likely to carry these habits with them for the rest of their lives. Parents, your children are at a pivotal time in their growth and development: Build strong bones now, or risk weak bones and teeth in the future. The good news is building strong bones is possible with a daily commitment to exercise and healthy eating. Check out some IDEAS below! Weight-bearing exercise: Just like muscles, bones get stronger the more we use them. During “weight-bearing exercise” like walking, running and lifting weights, bones adapt to the impact of weight and the pull of muscle by building more bone cells. More bone cells = stronger bones. Other fun weight-bearing exercises include jumping rope, dancing, basketball, soccer, yoga, and even hanging from the monkey bars! Kids and adults should do 3060 minutes of weight-bearing exercise daily for maximum results!

Calcium-rich foods: Foods rich in calcium and vitamin D are essential for building strong bones and teeth. Unfortunately, most kids do not get enough in their diets. Children ages 4 to 8 years old need 3 servings of calcium-rich foods each day and children ages 9 to 18 years old need 4 servings each day. Below is a list of calcium-rich foods you can find on our February menu: Assorted milk (Fat-free milk, 1% lowfat milk, fortified soy milk, or lactose-free milk) (Breakfast, Lunch and Supper) Cheese (shredded, sliced, sticks, cubes, sauce) (Breakfast, Lunch and Supper) Yogurt (Breakfast and Supper) Fortified breakfast cereals (Breakfast) Dark green leafy vegetables: Broccoli, spinach, romaine lettuce and collard greens (Lunch and Supper) Oranges (Breakfast, Lunch and Supper) Beans (Breakfast and Lunch)

School meals help children meet their daily calcium needs, so please encourage your child to eat breakfast and lunch at school EVERY day to build strong bones and a healthy smile!
