Feeling Overwhelmed I Quit -1 Pastor Michael Rochelle January 10/11, 2015 Feeling overwhelmed generates a helplessness and a hopelessness that leads to sadness The Testimony of Three Overwhelmed Believers … Moses said, "If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now – if I have found favor in your eyes – and do not let me face my own ruin." Numbers 11:15 (NIV) Elijah said "… while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’” 1 Kings 19:4 (NIV) Jonah said, "Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live." Jonah 4:3 (NIV) 1. THE CONTEXT 

They were worn out PHYSICALLY

Moses "He asked the Lord, ‘Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?" Numbers 11:11 (NIV)

"Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers?” Numbers 11:12 (NIV) "I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me." Numbers 11:14 (NIV) Elijah “Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there…” 1 Kings 19:3 (NIV) Jonah “But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah…” Jonah 1:17 (NIV) “Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah, a second time: ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” Jonah 3:1-2 (NIV) 

They were wrought up PSYCHOLOGICALLY

Moses "He asked the Lord, ‘Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?’" Numbers 11:11 (NIV) “The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, ‘What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?’" Exodus 18:13-14 (NIV) Elijah "…He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said, ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’” 1 Kings 19:4 (NIV) Jonah "But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry." Jonah 4:1 (NIV)

"He prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.’” Jonah 4:2-3 (NIV) 

They were wound down SPIRITUALLY

Moses "Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and cut off all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God." Deuteronomy 25:17-18 (NIV) Elijah “Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.” 1 Kings 19:3 (NIV) Jonah “But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry.” Jonah 4:1 (NIV) 2. THE CORRECTION 

For The Physical Problem…

To Moses, God gave HELPERS … “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on Them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone.’" Numbers 11:16-17 (NIV) To Elijah, God gave a RETREAT … "Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again”. 1 Kings 19:5-6 (NIV)

"The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night." 1 Kings 19:7-9 (NIV) To Jonah, God gave SHELTER … "But the Lord replied, ‘Have you any right to be angry?’ Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. Then the Lord God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine." Jonah 4:4-6 (NIV) 

For The Psychological Problem

To Moses, God gave a PROMISE … “The Lord answered Moses, ‘Is the Lord’s arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you.’” Numbers 11:23 (NIV) To Elijah, God demonstrated POWER … “The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’” 1 Kings 19:11 (NIV) To Jonah, God offered a new POINT OF VIEW … “But God said to Jonah, ‘Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?’” Jonah 4:9 (NIV) 

For The Spiritual Problem

Moses “Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him …” Numbers 11:25a (NIV) Elijah “Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:13d (NIV) Jonah “But God said to Jonah …” Jonah 4:9a (NIV)
