Importance of Outdoor Reset Controls

George R. Carey Jr., FIA, Inc. Vice President, Bostonian A Room What is an Electronically Commutated Magnetic motor and how does it differ from traditional pumps? • How to read an ECM pump’s performance curves and use it to properly select the right pump • How modulating/condensing boilers operate even MORE efficiently when ECM pumps are installed on these boilers • Why ECM pumps can improve a hydronic system’s performance with their on-board microprocessor intelligence • Why the utilities are offering rebate programs to their customers to use these new style pumps

Greening Steam

Dan Holohan, Holohan Associates, President, Cailey Room It's not easy being green, especially when it comes to America's older steam-heating systems. Most of those old systems are unbalanced, which leads people to either open the windows on the cold days, or shiver and then buy electric heaters to make up for it. In this session, Dan Holohan will show you how to "green" steam and get the most efficiency out of those vintage systems.

Exploring Ductless Splits and Heat Pumps

Kevin Shea, Emerson Swan, Training Coordinator, Regis Room Please join us for a Haier technical ductless/mini split seminar. Take advantage of learning how to become involved in this growing market that will allow you to diversify your business and increase your revenue opportunities. Emerson Swan and Haier will be discussing the sizing, application, installation and servicing involved in achieving the perfect installation. Seminar details include sizing rules of thumb, applications in both new and existing buildings, installation tips and manufacturers guidelines, and understanding the Haier self-diagnostic control systems.

Kevin Flynn, Viessmann Manufacturing (U.S.) Inc., Regional Sales Manager, New England Bostonian B Room GasNetworks heating equipment rebates are designed to encourage the installation of the highest efficiency levels in our customers’ homes and businesses. Using Manual J and Manual S to Save Time, Money, and Energy David L Parker, CLEAResult, Account Manager, Bostonian A Room • When to do a Manual J and why you should be doing it • Site survey information: Do a site survey for a representative project • Examples of Manual J and how changing the affected building components and characteristics impact the outcome • How what we learned affects the existing duct system and whether it will suit the new equipment – and why it matters. Talk about duct sizing for the heating system and the formula for sizing ductwork (CFM= BTUH/temperature rise x 1.08) • Apply Manual S to what we learned • What all this means to the contractor and to the home owner Check out all of the great outdoor exhibits (including the natural gas combustion safety demonstration) during the lunch break!

Changes to special permission, gas boosters, dual fuel, elevated pressure, co-generation, and installations over 12, 500,000 will be explained. Do you know the difference between preinstallation and post-installation variances? And what will happen with engineered installations?

Ways of Fixing or Preventing Back Drafting Due to Depressurization of CAZ Mark Newey, Center for EcoTechnology, Building Science Specialist & Trainer, Regis Room What do you do when the worst-case depressurization CAZ test fails? How do you communicate the results to the homeowner and what can be done about it? This session will review common reasons the CAZ test fails and fixes that can be incorporated into your scope of work with the homeowner.

Brad Wong, Eversource, Energy Supervisor Gas Service, Mediterranean Room Massachusetts has a new Fuel Gas Code that was enacted in late 2014. It is revamped with many of the sections either deleted or significantly revised. In addition, it has adopted new regulations and standards. If you install equipment, you will need to attend this class to understand the new changes and be code compliant. The code now contains many sections which replace many of the Gas Board’s policies and interpretations, which have been deleted from the Board website.

In addition to reviewing the changes, an explanation of the reasons for the changes will assist you in understanding the reasons why the code sections were revised. There will be an open forum for discussion on how to work within the code changes to achieve code compliant installations. And, of course, your questions will be answered.

Customer Service in the Age of Social Media

Susan Jannett, Warm Thoughts Communications, Customer Service & Social Media Trainer Bostonian B Room It used to be that if a customer felt mistreated, the worst-case scenario was that they told their friends and you might lose some business. In today’s world, angry customers take to social media to vent. Whether it’s on Yelp, Yahoo, Google Plus, or Facebook, their story is shared to the world in an instant of rage. This session will teach you how to handle social media fiascos and provide tools to help prevent them in the first place.

The Roots of Radiant

Dan Holohan, Holohan Associates, President, Cailey Room The modern age of hydronic radiant heating may seem new, but its story starts in 1911 in Liverpool, England, where 119,000 square feet of radiant walls graced the Royal Liver building (the world's first reinforced-concrete building). And this happened 17 years before the invention of the centrifugal pump! Travel through time as Dan Holohan takes you and back and forth across the world to other important jobs in the development of hydronic radiant heating. Lots of great photos and captivating stories in this session. And there's even some rock-and-roll!
