News for the Residents of Olmos Park

Friendship Bridge

Long-time Olmos Park resident Mary Kay Stewart is again digging in for the hard work of her favorite charity, Friendship Bridge. In 2006 Mary Kay found a g ro u p o f w o m e n (several from Olmos Park) willing to work with this micro-finance group which gives small business loans to the poverty-stricken women of Guatemala. The group organized and put on a wonderful meal at Los Patios with a silent auction, live music and sales of Guatemalan goods and the proceeds became loans for a new group of Guatemalan women. The event was a great success. On February 25th the group will host their third annual “Toast to Hope” event at Los Patios and the proceeds will go to a leaning center in Solola, Guatemala. As Mary Kay points out, there are many institutions that now give micro-loans around the world…..a financial tool popularized by the work of Mohammed Yanus who began with micro-loans in Bangladesh in the 70’s and who received the Nobel Peace Prize for this work in 2006. What makes Friendship Bridge such a powerful charity is that it offers education to the women who receive the loans and to their children. The Mayan women form small groups to apply for loans and each must co-guarantee the loan of the others. This powerful social bond is one of the main reasons for the success of this micro-finance Institution. The classes are conducted at the women’s payback meetings and Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

vary among the topics chosen by the women: from women’s health, to growing a business, t o a c counting and inventory practices. T h e s e Gu a t e m a l a n women have businesses in weaving, in agriculture and in small retail outlets and they use their profits to grow their businesses and to educate their children. Often their businesses grow to the point that they become a family enterprise, keeping the men at home in the business instead of leaving the country in search of work. In November of this year Mary Kay took a small group of Friendship Bridge supporters to meet some of the Guatemalan clients in the western highlands of Guatemala. There the San Antonio women were privileged to sit in on a payback meeting of women in Cerro de Oro, outside of Santiago Atitlan pictured here. The lesson was on using native plants as herbal pain relief medicine and was taught by a Friendship Bridge loan officer in the native Mayan dialect. The warmth and appreciation of the women whose lives are bounded by poverty was a moving tribute to the work done by Friendship Bridge. The San Antonio group is still in need of willing volunteers and invites everyone to log onto www.friendshipbridge.org to purchase tickets to the Los Patios event on Feb 25th, 2010. For more information, email Mary Kay at [email protected]. The Olmos Reader - January 2010

4th Annual San Antonio Adoption Fair 2010 Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 (1-5 p at Northern Hills Church - 3703 N Loop 1604 E) There are literally hundreds of thousands of children who are orphaned around the world just waiting for forever families. Some wait due to Child Protective Services intervention, others wait due to overwhelming poverty and hardship in their country. Regardless of the reason, they wait ~ hoping that someone will open their home and heart to them. The Fourth Annual San Antonio Adoption Fair will host foster care and adoption agencies from across the nation on Saturday, January 23rd from 1-5 p.m. at Northern Hills Church to assist potential parents as they begin the process of adoption. There will be information on domestic, international, CPS adoption and foster care. We will have an adoptive-families panel (parents, children and adult adoptees) to discuss adoption experiences and answer any questions guests may have. “The Heart Gallery” will also display portraits of foster children who are legally available for adoption. In addition, guest speakers will highlight topics on legal rights, the home study process, the various types of adoptions available, and other adoption related topics. This free event is a community awareness project of Adoption Priorities, Inc. It is API’s desire and mission to assist families who are seeking adoption information or who are seriously considering changing the life of a child forever. For more information, please visit www.sanantonioadoptionfair. com or call (210) 494-2160.

The Olmos Reader Beautiful Creatures

By Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl “Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover, No Matter “Witch” One You Choose” I came across Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl on the Amazon Editor’s Picks of the top 100 books of 2009…with what appeared to be an intriguing plot and a gorgeous book cover, I thought I couldn’t go wrong. I was wrong. This young adult book is about a small town and a teenage boy, Ethan, who is stuck in it. The town is pretty stereotypical—nothing changes, people are narrow minded and everyone knows everyone else’s business. It seems that ever since his mom’s death, Ethan’s dreams are filled with a strange girl whom he is trying to save but is unsuccessful. In comes Lena, the girl whom Ethan has been dreaming about and who is a supernatural being, along with her hermit uncle and bizarre family.

Will this be the year you reach your New Year’s Goals? Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

During the Civil War, a curse was cast, which will directly affect Lena on her sixteenth birthday. The countdown begins as Ethan and Lena together try to save Lena’s future. Does Ethan save Lena? I won’t divulge the end, but I will say that all of the effort is fruitless (not necessarily the outcome, mind you, but the effort, like the continual skipping of school to research a book that they think will have the answers they need to reverse the curse. Not the best example for our young adult audience). Even with curses, sci-fi details and an introduction to the vocabulary of the supernatural (Caster, Natural, Witches, Spells…), the book is full of fluff and is a complete disappointment. This book doesn’t even compare to the Twilight series. Lesson learned; don’t judge a book by its cover. Feel free to comment on this review, your thoughts on the book or suggest a book for me to review on my blog: http://brittsbuzz. blogspot.com.
