Instruc(ons for the Burial of the Dead This form is to help you communicate your wishes regarding your funeral, burial or crema8on. It will guide you through all the decisions and choices you will need to make for the service. Your loved ones will be in a state of grief. By comple8ng these forms, you are giving them a gi? of calm confidence that your wishes will be carried out.
How does this process work? Prayerfully invest 8me filling out the following pages. You will need a Book of Common Prayer, a Bible and a 1982 Hymnal. A?er you have finished the form, call St. Bartholomew’s and make an appointment with a staff member to look it over with you. At that mee8ng, copies of this form will be generated. One will be placed in a locked file at the church and the other copies will be given to you. We suggest you keep a copy with your important documents (such as your Will, Durable Power of APorney paperwork and Advanced Care Direc8ves, etc…) and give a copy to a person whom you can trust to follow your wishes. Be sure your loved ones know where your important documents are.
What exactly is the Burial of the Dead? The Burial of the Dead is an Easter liturgy that focuses on our hope in the resurrec8on of Jesus. Because the focus is on Jesus, it is not normal to allow for personalized eulogies during the funeral. The liturgy is found in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). The service typically occurs in a church within 3 days of death. The liturgy is characterized by the joy and certainty of Romans 8: 38: “That neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons neither the present nor the future, nor any powers neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all crea8on will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Instruc(ons for the Burial of the Dead The love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn. (BCP 490)

Sec(on II: Liturgy of the Dead: You will need a Book of Common Prayer (BCP’s are paginated), a Bible and a hymnal. These can be borrowed from Saint Bartholomew’s. Step 1: Choose the Rite and Eucharist: Typically Rite 2 is used and the Eucharist is celebrated but it is a personal preference. Check two of the following:
Rite 1: Beginning on page 469 BCP. This Rite uses tradi8onal language from the 1928 BCP
Rite 2: Beginning on page 491 BCP. This Rite uses contemporary language
I wish to have the Eucharist celebrated
I do not wish to have the Eucharist celebrated
Step 2: Choose scriptures and lessons using page 494 BCP: Old Testament
Psalm
New Testament
Gospel
Step 3: Music Selec(ons: St. B’s typically provides an organist who uses the aPached list of hymns, two to three (2-‐3) volunteer vocalists and audio support. The prelude and postlude music is at the discre8on of the organist. Music at the service focuses on the resurrec8on of Jesus. If you wish to have other songs played, consider having them at a wake. Honorariums are given at the discre8on of the family. Typically they are $100 -‐ $150 for the organist and the same for audio support. Checks are made payable to Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. I would like to have the following hymns: (Please refer to the list of aPached hymns)

If you wish to have more than what is offered for the standard liturgy (i.e. more musicians, vocalists, a choir etc…) the Director of Music at St. B’s will try to fulfill your wishes but that may not be possible due to reali8es of hiring appropriate musicians and vocalists on short no8ce. Any fees incurred will be billed to the next of kin. If possible I would request the following extra musicians/vocalists:
