BIBLE STORY FOCUS

God wants friends to help each other. David helps Mephibosheth • 1 Samuel 20:14-17; 2 Samuel 9:1-13

WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “We’ve been talking about David and Jonathan and how they were best friends even though Jonathan’s dad, King Saul, didn’t like David. David ran away to be safe, but before he did, he promised Jonathan that they would always be friends and that he would help Jonathan’s family for the rest of his life.” During the Activity: “Years and years went by and now David was the king! King David remembered the promise he had made to Jonathan that he would always take care of Jonathan’s family. King David told his servant to search everywhere to find someone from Jonathan’s family. So that’s what the servant did. He looked over here. The servant looked over there. He searched high, and he looked low. He looked everywhere until he found someone! It was Jonathan’s son named Mephibosheth. Now Mephibosheth was crippled, which meant his legs didn’t work very well. He couldn’t walk; he needed help. King David knew that good friends help each other. So he brought Mephibosheth to the palace. Wouldn’t it be REALLY cool to be invited to a palace? (Pause.) That’s not all David did! He told Mephibosheth that he could live there. He even gave Mephibosheth his very own seat at the king’s table. He wanted Mephibosheth to be a part of his family. Wasn’t that an awesome thing for King David to do? (Pause.) David knew that God wants friends to help each other. And that’s exactly what he did. What a good friend David
