Greetings from the East By Frank During, Worshipful Master

Greetings from the East!

March has passed and with it our Pancake Breakfasts on Sunday mornings; they will surely be missed by everyone. Brother Dennis again did a marvelous job orchestrating these well attended public events. March also brought the beginning of spring, this change of seasons is highly anticipated after the dreary months of winter. We will soon be cleaning road ditches, having barbecues and enjoying the great outdoors. As we have in the last few months revisited the three Craft Degrees taught in the Blue Lodge, we have learned that: • As an Entered Apprentice, we learned the importance of our outward relationships with others and the institutions of our society. • As a Fellowcraft, we were taught that it takes a combination of Intellect, Experience, Intuition, Feeling, Emotion, and Education to make real progress in life. We also discovered our dual nature and that there is a spirit within us, which can lead us to self-improvement. • As a Master Mason, we turned inward and came face to face with our own worst enemy - our Ego; and then we were given the opportunity to transcend our passions and our prejudices, becoming true to who we are and to the best within us. Now, we are prepared, through our own efforts, to advance to higher awareness that is to be found in the advancement to the higher Degrees which are taught in the Scottish Rite. And, like the Craft Degrees, the Scottish Rite Degrees form a progressive system of morality, veiled

allegory. The 4th to the 14th degree in the Scottish Rite are called the ineffable Degrees, or the Lodge of Perfection, because their principal purpose is the investigation and contemplation of the ineffable name of Deity. The Degrees amplify the legend of the Master Mason Degree, and stories of the biblical era, leading up to the building of King Solomon’s Temple. These Degrees are designed to impress more forcefully the teachings of the first three Degrees. Each taking the theme from the many names of God, “God is love”, “God is merciful”, ‘God is Just”. All Masons know that they are not perfect, but there is the path to perfection; by progressing through the 11 degrees of the Lodge of Perfection in the Scottish Rite. I invite all of you who have not been through the Scottish Rite to join us this April 9th and 23rd at the consistory meeting in Eau Claire. If you have any questions about the Scottish Rite please contact me or Brother Rick Swan. Lao Tzu once said: Watch your thoughts; They become words. Watch your words; They become actions. Watch your actions; They become habits. Watch your habits; They become character. Watch your character; It becomes your destiny. I believe that through Masonry, and the constant search for more knowledge, this Fraternity can accomplish all of that. You will build a better character by learning and continue to learn, the many lessons Masonry can teach you and thus, have a great and positive influence on your destiny. Let’s together build better characters. See you at our next lodge meeting, Frank During, Worshipful Master © Copyright 2016 Helmer Printing

News from the NorthEast

Martha - Martha’s station represents the uncertainty of human life arm in arm with Hope and Immortality. Her lesson is that we should walk in Faith, because without that we would find this life unbearable.

Kris Webster PM

Electa - Electa represents Loving Kindness as we’ve learned in the Ten Commandments. She practiced what she preached which is a life lesson for all of us. Together, the Star Points represent all the virtues that we talk about in the Order. In truth, none of us practice all of them every day, but we should consider them goals as good Eastern Star members.

Change is good. That doesn’t mean we don’t value what came before, but it means we are open to “different”. While having the same officers year after year is “comfortable” it’s also kind of boring. Different officers bring different perspectives; that doesn’t mean better or worse - it just means different. Heaven forbid we might have to go outside our comfort level as that might mean extra work! The fact is, if we don’t think outside the proverbial box we might actually just tread water and stay the same year after year after year until we don’t exist anymore. I don’t want to intentionally scare anyone, but we need to grow and we need to stay active in our communities if we’re going to be a healthy organization. That means we need to bring in new members and work in our communities to let people know that Eastern Star exists and is a fraternal organization that cares about the people around us. End of sermon. In the last two editions we’ve talked about the officers of the Order of the Eastern Star and we’ve finally come to our very special Star Points: Adah - Adah is the first Star Point and is the symbol of Fidelity. Her lesson is that we should be faithful to all our obligations, whether to other people or God and country. Ruth - Ruth represents Constant Devotion in all we believe and do. Her lesson is to stay true to our beliefs.

Nilssen’s

Esther - Esther represents Loyalty. She did not make the easy choice - she stayed true to her past and made the right choice.

Spring means many Friends Nights and other social gatherings. Our Third Annual Ladies Tea will be held -on Sunday, May 1st at 2pm. Please contact Joyce Swan if you plan to attend. Her phone is 715-273-4924; email is [email protected]. This is a major fund-raiser for the Chapter, so please attend or lend a hand. Prior to that on Tuesday, April 19th Ellsworth Chapter will host it’s Friends Night beginning at 7pm. Other Friends Nights that are coming up are Northwest/Clear Lake on April 26th (this is a change of date) and New Richmond on May 12th ( I hope this is right because it’s not their normal meeting night, but it’s the date in their program). New Richmond is planning a carnival theme, so dress casually as though you’re going to the fair. It’s a busy time, so please try to attend all the events you can for the good of the Order. Star love!

Winners of the Masonic Rifle announced on Sunday

Fundraising Report by Dennis Donath, PM

The beautiful commemorative Henry 22LR was awarded at the Hancock Lodge on Sunday, March 13th along with cash prizes. The raffle was held, in part, to help fund the school lunch programs in both Ellsworth and Prescott. Worshipful Master Frank During officiated at the drawing with the help of Judy Broton of Reedsburg, Wisconsin.

Despite a somewhat rocky start in January when the temperatures were well below zero, our pancake breakfasts brought in just under $1,500 to the Lodge treasury. Not exactly a record, but reasonably successful. None of that would have been possible without the help of an awesome group of Hancock Lodge and Eastern Star helpers. I don’t have the final figures for the Hancock Lodge raffle yet, but I know we missed our goal of selling 200 tickets by a substantial amount. We did bring in enough money to pay the winning prizes plus the $2,000 we had obligated ourselves to contribute to the school lunch programs in Ellsworth and Prescott. We would have been in trouble, if not for the generosity of Scott and Joanne Gulbranson, who donated the special edition Masonic rifle, which was given away as the first prize. Congratulations to Steve Bristol, who won the rifle. The next major event that I am aware of is the annual Doc Jonas Cribbage Tournament which will be held at the Masonic Center on April 28th. Although I am not a very good player, I love cribbage. I will be traveling that week, so I won’t get to see Kraig Krueger win again. As I write this, I am so sorry for the loss of my next door neighbor and fishing buddy, Gary Melstrom, who passed away this morning (March 24th). He put up a good fight, but pancreatic cancer is hard to beat. On the day before he died, the members of Northwestern Lodge in Prescott held a special meeting at the Care Center in Prescott, in his honor. He waited until the last of his Masonic friends departed before falling asleep, not to awaken again. He will be missed.

The winner of the rifle was Steve Bristol, while cash prizes were won by Milt Helmer, Jeff Pajac and William Krueger. Just before the drawing, Worshipful Master Frank During presented Brother Dennis Donath with a special plaque in appreciation for his tireless efforts heading up the pancake breakfasts at the lodge. Past Master Steve Broton and his wife Judy traveled from their new home in Reedsburg to be with his brothers on Sunday. Worshipful brother Frank thanked Brother Scott Gulbranson of the Outdoor Store for donating the rifle, Kraig Krueger for chairing the raffle and to everyone who purchased tickets. The project was a huge success.

Worshipful brother Frank thanked Brother Scott Gulbranson of the Outdoor Store for donating the rifle, Kraig Krueger for chairing the raffle and to everyone who purchased tickets. The project was a huge success.
