HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! Breakfast with Santa

The holidays are around the corner and Breakfast with Santa will be on Saturday, December 11th from 8:30 to 11am in the Fern Bluff Mud Community Center. Come enjoy doughnut holes, juice and coffee as the kids visit with Santa. Choirs from Fern Bluff elementary, Chisholm Trail middle school and Round Rock high school will be performing for us. Donations for Brown Santa; the nearby Nursing Home; and our Adopt a Family program are greatly appreciated. Brown Santa and the Nursing Home are in need of food items as well as socks and other toiletry items. There are 6 families in total that we are trying to help out his year. Each of these families have special needs kids that are currently at Fern Bluff Elementary, or have been at Fern Bluff Elementary. Since the Gift Card donations worked out so well last year, we hope that we could also focus on assisting in that way again this year. (Walmart, HEB and Target are great for food and clothing items) Fern Bluff Elementary will be help to support our adopted families as well. Gifts and/or donations can be dropped off at the Fern Bluff Community Center or at the Park Valley Health Care Center during working hours up to December 13th. If you need additional information please call Laura Kouns at 733-1659 or email [email protected]. All residents are invited to join in on the fun! We have already heard from several of you who wish to volunteer, but many more wonderful volunteers are still needed on the day of the event: Setup for Breakfast with Santa at 7:45 am During Breakfast with Santa from 8:30 thru 11:00am Clean up after Breakfast with Santa at 11:00am Wrap presents from 11:00am -1:00pm Delivery of all donations Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

Stone Canyon KING OF KINGS TO ‘CAROL FOR CANS’ DECEMBER 12

Members of King of Kings Lutheran Church will return to Stone Canyon for the church’s second annual “Caroling for Cans” project, Sunday, December 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Caroling groups will spread Christmas cheer throughout the streets of Stone Canyon while collecting donations for the Round Rock Area Serving Center. The non-profit center includes a food pantry, which helps to serve individuals and families in need in Round Rock and surrounding areas. In its inaugural year, King of Kings carolers collected more than 100 pounds of food from Stone Canyon to benefit the serving center. Project organizers expect to cover even more streets this year, due to a larger number of volunteers.

“We were truly touched by the generosity of the Stone Canyon residents last year and the effort they made to participate in our program,” said Mark Dankis, senior pastor of King of Kings. “Some made special trips to the grocery store because they knew we were coming and wanted to help those in need. That’s what the holiday season is all about.” Organizers will place hangers on the doors of selected streets the week prior to provide residents with more information on participating. If residents are not available during the caroling event, they may place donations on their porches to be collected. The Round Rock Serving Center suggests items such as canned vegetables, soup, beans, tuna, meat, stews, breakfast cereal, pasta, peanut butter, baby food and

formula, toilet paper and toiletry items. For more information on Caroling for Cans, please contact Chris Graf at cgraf@ austin.rr.com. King of Kings Lutheran Church is a vibrant community of people (from youngsters to folks just hitting their “prime”) who are growing through God’s Word, receiving His grace and glorifying Him through ministry and missions.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

Still Time for Year-end Financial Moves But Hurry 'Cause...

The holiday season is always a busy time of year, so you’re probably pretty busy. But it is important to take some time now to evaluate year-end financial moves that may be beneficial in preparing for your financial future. Which year-end moves should you consider? You will want to talk to your financial advisor and tax and legal professionals first, but here are a few ideas to get you started: • Boost your IRA contributions. You have until April 15, 2011, to fully fund your IRA for the 2010 tax year, but the sooner you finish with your 2010 contribution, the quicker you can get started on your 2011 contribution — and the earlier in the year you fund your IRA, the more time you give your account the opportunity to grow. • Put more money into college savings plans. If you have a 529 college savings plan for yourself or someone else, consider putting more money in before year-end. You can gift up to $13,000 ($26,000 per married couple) per person per year without gift tax consequences. However, this must be accomplished by year-end. • Be generous. If you’ve been thinking of making charitable gifts,

don’t put them off any longer. As long as you make a donation to a qualified charity before the year ends, you can claim a deduction on your 2010 tax return. For example, if you donate $100 to a charitable group [either a religious organization or one that has received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service], and you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $100 (with a tax benefit of $25) when you file your taxes for 2010, providing, of course, that you itemize. If you donate stocks or other types of assets, you may also be able to save on capital gains taxes, because it will be the charity, not you, that eventually sells those assets. • Sell your “losers.” If you own investments that have lost value since you purchased them, you can sell them before 2010 ends and then use the tax loss to offset capital gains you may have earned in other investments. If you don’t have any capital gains, you can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses to offset other ordinary income. If your loss is greater than $3,000, you can “carry over” the excess and deduct it from your taxes in future years. However, if you then want to repurchase the investment you sold, you’ll need to wait at least 31 days to avoid violating the IRS’ “wash sale” rules. • Take capital gains. In 2011, the tax rate on long-term capital gains is scheduled to increase to 20% for most investors, up from the 15% rate it’s been the last several years. If you have stocks or other appreciated assets that you were thinking of selling in the near future, you might want to do so before the year comes to a close. However, it’s generally not a good idea to make investment decisions strictly because of tax consequences. If your appreciated assets are still a part of your overall financial strategy, you may be better off holding them for the long term, even with a higher capital gains rate. Considering these moves before the year ends may help you better prepare to address you financial picture in 2011.
