CALL TO CONFESSION

“My Jesus, I Love Thee”

Paul Sjolund

“My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; For thee all the follies of sin I resign; My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now. I love thee because thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree. I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus ‘tis now. In mansions of glory and endless delight I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow; If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus ‘tis now.”

SECOND SCRIPTURE READING

God of justice, forgive us for blaming others for our pain and sorrow. Forgive us for choosing wrath over forgiveness. Forgive us when we seek justice through ways that inflict pain on others and on our world. Forgive us for the deep anger we allow to fester in our hearts and minds and bodies. Help us to let go of our anger so that our lives radiate your love and light. Empower us to model forgiveness and justice in ways that change our world.

One: The peace of Jesus Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (The Confession of 1967, 9.14) God’s love never changes. Against all who oppose him, God expresses his love in wrath. In the same love, God took on himself judgment and shameful death in Jesus Christ, to bring all to repentance and new life. “Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive”

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
