A monthly offering from

Hispanic Heritage

Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 and expanded to a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. It is observed September 15October 15, signifiant because September 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and NIcaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate Independence on Septmbeer 16 and 18 respectively. Celebrations of Hispanic Heritage reflect the histories, cultures and contributions to this country of Latino people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. In the Diocese of Texas, we have a growing number of Hispanic congregations where services are held in Spanish. They include St. John’s, St. James and San Francisco de Asis, Austin; St. Mary Magdalene, Manor; San Pablo, San Pedro, San Romero, San Mateo, Santa Maria Virgen, Christ Church Cathedral and St. Alban’s, Houston. In each of these congregations, there are people who trace their roots to many Spanish-speaking countries.

For 50 years Latinos/Hispanics have been officially recognized in this land of freedom and opportunity for all. This recognition is for an active presence and progress that is helping to shape the future of the United States. Whether it is in Congress or picking tomatoes and oranges, teaching new generations in schools and colleges or cleaning the windows of buildings, traveling into space or serving meal at restaurants, serving in the army and dieing for this country or picking up trash from our streets and neighborhoods, serving as doctors and nurses in hospitals to improve peoples’ live or cleaning hotel rooms, crafting and painting beautiful pieces of art or entertaining millions as art-

ists and sports players, spiritually nurturing thousands of people or serving as translators in courts—the Latino/ Hispanic presence is far from standing idle. It is a power source in constructive and positive forward motion. So, this Hispanic Heritage Month all across the U.S., we celebrate the gifts received in the past, those offered in the present and the promise of future gifts from people who are of Latino/Hispanic descent. There will be parades, arts exhibitions, small local events, presentations at the White House and city halls, and of course in churches. In the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, we have many Latino/Hispanic congregations where services are held

in Spanish. In each of these congregations, there are people who trace their roots to many Spanish-speaking countries. I’d like to encourage you to consider paying a visit to one of these Latino/Hispanic congregations or to another close to your home during this period of celebration. It has been a difficult year for Latinos/Hispanic in this nation, I am pretty sure your visit will be highly appreciated. The Commission on Hispanic Ministry includes clergy and lay who are in charge of leading ministry with predominately Hispanic congregations in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. In their quarterly meetings, the Commission considers mission strategies, funding and shared resources to meet the needs of HIspanics in our Diocese. The are specifically focused on raising awareness of the Episcopal Church in predominately Hispanic communities and introducing new people to the Episcopal Church. Additionally, the Commission works to design mission strategies for each Hispanic congregation, plans and hosts an annual lay conference for more than 250 people, provides support for clergy in Hispanic ministry and strives to identify and encourage those interested in ministry to follow their calling. In 2016 the Commission produced Juntos en Misión (Together in Mission), a Spanish equivalent of the popular Invite, Welcome, Connect evangelism series developed in the Diocese of Texas. This program is available online, at no cost, for any Spanish-speaking congregation in the Episcopal Church and beyond to use. To learn more: https://tinyurl.com/juntosenmision

Commission on Hispanic Ministry Trains, Raises Up New Leaders

At San Mateo in Houston, it’s all about the papusas! Communities gather around dance, music and food, lots and lots of food. Each year, the congregation celebrates their diversity by people singing a verse of the national anthem from their home country, then the congregation joins together to sing the Star Spangled Banner. What follows the service is a feast, a cornucopia of Mexican, Central and South American dishes, plucked from the recipes of generations past. The next celebration will be Sunday, September 23, 2018.
