Peter Millen College Director

Welcome to Eynesbury. We invite students from all over the world to study in Adelaide, South Australia. Our education style is quite unique; in fact, Eynesbury pioneered this model of specialist, pre-university teaching. We offer a range of programs which allow students to study English language, followed by either Senior High School, Foundation or Diploma programs. We have always maintained a strong emphasis on university entrance and education pathways. Our teachers are more than specialists in their field; they deliver exceptional teaching during lesson time, and extensive individual support to students outside of the classroom. Students are supported in their learning through flexible timetables, small class sizes and a comprehensive wellbeing program, which ensures students reach their full potential. We continue to be extremely proud of our students, year after year. Eynesbury graduates regularly achieve outstanding results, and go on to study at universities around Australia, and across the globe. We look forward to welcoming you to Adelaide, and to Eynesbury.

Eynesbury Advantage Eynesbury offers the most comprehensive range of pathway programs in South Australia, which provide maximum flexibility for students to gain entry into their chosen degree program at the University of Adelaide. As a leading pathway provider, for almost 30 years, we have successfully prepared thousands of students for university in Australia. Our specialist approach combines small class sizes, experienced teachers and close academic guidance to support students in academic preparation for university. As a result, Eynesbury high school students are consistently placed in the top 1% of students in South Australia, with more than 99% of them being offered a place at a university of their choice. This same level of academic support prepares our Foundation Studies students for direct entry into their program at the University of Adelaide, or any other university in Australia. Diploma students will experience the same small class sizes, with teachers who are specialists in their field. Upon completion, Diploma students fast-track into the second year at the University of Adelaide.

Eynesbury has two campuses, both located in the centre of Adelaide, near the Chinatown and Central Market precinct. It’s a short walk to the University of Adelaide. Our modern, purpose-built Coglin Street campus is home to our English language, Diploma and Foundation Studies programs, while the Franklin Street campus is for our Senior High School. In this guide you will find information on: • Our beautiful city of Adelaide, and why it’s the fifth most liveable city in the world • The University of Adelaide and their journey of education, distinction and excellence • The range of pathway programs offered at Eynesbury, and how they prepare you for university • The high school, and how our students consistently achieve outstanding results • Your accommodation options, including our own purposebuilt student residence.

A progressive institution From its early beginnings, South Australia was a progressive state. Established by free settlers, it was the first Australian state to grant voting rights to women. Reflecting the values of the state in which it was founded, The University of Adelaide became the first university in Australia to: • admit women to academic courses (1881) • grant degrees in science (1882) • establish a Chair of Music (1884), offer a bachelor degree in music (1886), create a Conservatorium of Music (1897), and graduate a Doctor of Music (1902) • provision for the election of the first woman to a university governing body (Helen Mayo, University Council, 1914)

6

A distinctive approach to learning and teaching Through excellence in learning and teaching, the University of Adelaide seeks to develop graduates of international distinction. Students have the chance to learn under the expert guidance of leading academics, and by studying at a research-intensive university they learn research techniques from undergraduate level. They develop problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate—skills that are invaluable for further study and employment.

Small group discovery The University of Adelaide is committed to giving all students opportunities to learn in small groups, peer-to-peer and under the guidance of leading academics and researchers. This experience will enhance students’ initiative and creativity, maximising studying in a research-intensive university.

Eynesbury College Senior Secondary Years 10, 11 and 12

Since

1989

Eynesbury College was the first senior secondary college established in Australia for students in years 10, 11 and 12. The academic focus for all students is preparation for university. Students are expected to be independent learners, but also enjoy significant academic support within the teacher mentor program. In addition to the mentor program, students’ welfare is supported by our two professionally qualified student counsellors. Students can seek assistance with any academic or personal matters in confidence.

Our teachers are subject specialists who are regularly involved in curriculum development, moderating grades and supervising exams. Teachers schedule time in their weekly timetable to be available for one-on-one student support outside of the classroom. Eynesbury Year 12 students’ results have consistently placed them at the top of the state and merit awards for perfect scores are achieved every year.

What is the Eynesbury Advantage? Eynesbury College students out perform students from other schools because of the exceptional support we provide in our student mentor program. As soon as students enrol, they are assigned a mentor, who will provide support to the student throughout their time at Eynesbury. The mentor is a member of the college teaching staff. Right from the first term, the mentor will provide assistance at orientation, to log into the student portal, and develop a timetable to suit the student’s academic interests. Students meet with their mentor once per week to discuss topics such as: • study and time management skills • support with assignments and presentations • advice and assistance when applying for university • team building and activities • appropriate use of technology

16

Eynesbury College students who wish to specialise in a specific study area are also eligible for entry to our Foundation or Diploma programs. Students are also able to package year 11 high school studies directly with the Eynesbury Foundation Studies Program.

Focus on Eynesbury Student support services Eynesbury is committed to helping students achieve their goals by offering comprehensive student support services. Eynesbury has a dedicated team of student support staff who provide a range of services, information, personal support and counselling to students throughout their studies at Eynesbury. Once enrolled, Eynesbury offers a compulsory orientation program for all new students, in which they will: • choose and enrol in courses • meet staff and current students • get to know new classmates • receive student ID card, and • tour the campus facilities.

Internships In the final trimester of study, Diploma students can apply for an internship with an Australian company, to help kick-start their career. Participants will have a personal training plan, and a mentor to help them get the most out of their 10 - 12 week Australian work experience placement.

Student Experience Program Eynesbury prides itself on providing an outstanding student experience by integrating a wide range of social and recreational activities that encourage local and international students to socialise together. These activities are often where friendships are forged, networks are established and lifelong memories are made. Activities include: • barbecues • bushwalking • sporting events • cultural events • student leadership programs and forums • job search support and volunteering • interview skills workshops.

Independent accommodation Independent rental can be a great option once you know your way around Adelaide. It can be less expensive, particularly if you’re sharing with other people. Visit www.realestate.com.au and select ‘rent’ then enter Adelaide, or the name of the suburb you’d like to live in. These are normal rental homes. There will be at least 1 bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Bigger houses may have 3 or 4 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. Be careful that you fully understand the terms of any independent rental contract you sign. This type of accommodation is not arranged by Eynesbury. We don’t recommend independent rental unless you’re already living in Adelaide and feel confident to find your own accommodation. You will be required to sign a lease for 6 or 12 months and will be responsible for rent for the length of the contract. All agreements must be signed in English. From $200 per week for 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, up to $400 or more for a larger house. Most rental properties are not furnished. You will need to buy furniture, cutlery, crockery, bed linen and towels, and electrical equipment. You will also need to cover the cost of the electricity, gas and water for the house, plus your own food costs, plus public transport (if in suburban area).

All accommodation types will require a bond to be paid. This is usually a dollar amount equal to 2 - 4 weeks’ rent. The bond is a separate payment, and is not the same thing as paying rent in advance. For independent rental the bond is lodged with the State Government, and can be returned to the student when you move out, as long as there is no damage to the property or outstanding rent or bills. You also need to give a minimum amount of notice if you decide to leave your accommodation. *Prices are current at the time of printing and may be subject to change.
