INTRODUCTION In this series, we have been learning about who we are in Christ. Our value and identity is found in our knowledge of how God views us. God loves us and we are chosen, blessed, strong, and alive in him. The problem is that in life, mislabeling can occur and there is a tendency to carry those definitions around with us. This affects the way we view ourselves, God and other people. So, how do we make the switch from the wrong labels to the right ones?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. As you look at those closest to you, what are some of the labels you see people carrying around with them? How about you? Are there some untrue labels that you’ve believed about yourself since you’ve become a Christ follower?

4. Read John 10:10. Our fullest life will be found in our relationship with Jesus, not comparing ourselves with others. What areas do you struggle with comparison or trying to keep up with others? What are some ways that you combat the comparison trap?

2. Read Ephesians 4:17-24. Paul tells us to no longer live as unbelievers. What were some of the old ways of life that you’ve thrown off from your past? What have you replaced those old ways with? Are there any areas that you’re still working on that you’d like to cast aside? 3. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:23 to let the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes. Why do you think this is important? How are our thoughts and attitudes connected? How crucial is God’s help in the process of aligning our ways to reflect Christ? How have you seen God work in your character and behavior?

5. Read Ephesians 4:25-32. What are some of the practical ways that Paul instructs us to live? Do you struggle with any of these? Paul challenges us to be encouraging to others. Who in your life or family needs some encouraging words? If you’re in a small group, take some time to encourage and build one another up.

THINK ABOUT IT

Teaching Pastor Jason Anderson said that when we find regular time to read the Bible and quiet our life enough to listen to Him, we allow the Spirit to renew our thoughts and attitudes. The only way that we can rid ourselves of our old labels is to know God’s Word and follow his instruction daily. We get to take off the old nature and a put on our new nature found only through our relationship with Christ.

COMMIT TO MEMORY Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
