OzRunways V4 Introduction

Overview •  This set of slides gets you going with OzRunways and introduces you to the basics

NOTE: Due the evolving nature of the OzRunways App, some screen shots may vary slightly in layout from your version.

First Steps •  After downloading find the OzRunways icon and tap on it

Initial Splash Screen •  When you first start OzRunways be sure to be connected to a good 3/4G or WiFi network so that the App can download maps, aviation data etc. •  A splash screen is displayed when the App first starts up – it disappears after a while and is replaced by the Map screen

GPS HUD There are a number of status and menu bars that control various aspects of operation of the App. We will take a look at each of these in turn.

iPad Status Bar The iPad status bar indicates the state of various iPad housekeeping parameters

GPS running

Battery charge level and charging status – plugged in but fully charged 7

Top Menu Bar – Map Page The Top Menu Bar is present shows what map or page is being displayed and may have various menu buttons displayed

Timer Tap for Planner

In this menu bar (yours may differ depending on setup), the map name and lat/lon of the middle of the map are shown if the cursor is enabled.

This is the Print Map (Screen) button This is the screen lock button – touch this to disable any accidental touches on the screen in a bumpy environment. Don’t forget to touch it again to unlock in order to do something on the screen.

This is the screen dim (night ops) button

MOB – Man Overboard Function – drops User Waypoint at current 8 position

Top Menu Bar - Airfields Top Menu bar when accessing info on the Airfields page

GPS HUD

This is called the GPS HUD (Heads Up Display). It appears on the map page. It can display a selection of information. The fields are user-defined by pressing and holding your finger on any of the information boxes. Most fields are self explanatory. ALERT: See the doc “Using the GPS HUD” for more info 10

Bottom Tab Bar Touching these buttons moves between major App functions/pages.

Maps – map viewing, moving map, weather, flight planning Scratchpad – a place to store info quickly

Airfields – AIP – full ERSA text of the airfield AIP data, Approach Plates Documents – other ERSA data and User Documents

Settings – App housekeeping details

Bottom Menu Bar – Own Position This is present only on the Maps page and provides various map and planning related access

Moving map button – tap once to center the map at your current location – it will turn blue and move the map (north up) as your position changes (moving map). Press again and the button turns purple and the map changes to track up mode.

Bottom Menu Bar Map button – tap once to bring up a menu with a selection of maps

Radar button – tap once to bring up a BOM radar closest to the center of the map. (Australia only at present)

Tools button – tap once to bring up a menu with a selection of auxiliary tools

Plan button – tap once to bring up a selection of flight plans

Closest button – tap once to bring up a menu with the closest airports, etc.

‘COGs’ button – tap once to bring up a menu that allows you to control the information displayed on the map

Map Basics Features popout – see next page Touch on the map with one finger and hold on screen and drag that finger to drag the map. Touch thumb and forefinger together and pinch inwards to zoom out or pinch outwards to zoom in to the map. The maps have some maximum and minimum zoom level which will limit the zoom levels. If you have a popup (a small screen with information of an ephemeral nature) displayed tap away from the popup to dismiss it. 14

Map Basics This popout menu allows you to toggle the display of ADs, ALAs, HLSs, etc.

Screen Basics •  We will go through the functionality of the menu buttons in more detail later on. •  But let’s get going with a flight plan

First Plan

A keyboard will popup. Then type your desired waypoints – in this case YWLM and YCNK. Then tap the return key.

First Plan If your plan is between two ADs for which there is a preferred route, a route selection popup will be displayed. For DCT, just tap ‘Done’, otherwise select the route you want then tap ‘Done’.

First Plan The detail of the new plan appears. This has a variety of information and buttons displayed. If this is your first plan, the App will automatically select an aircraft (a C172 with tail letters OZ-RWY) to get you started. We will learn how to add new aircraft and customize the aircraft later. To enable this plan, tap ‘Go Fly’

‘Fly’ Mode The tap on the ‘Go Fly’ button changes the mode of the App from ‘Plan’ to ‘Fly’. This is indicated by an additional line in the GPS HUD. The far right box tells us the next waypoint. Here is says YWLM, because our current location displaced from YWLM at we have to get there first! Tap this box (it says Cancel) to get out of ‘Fly’ mode. The info in the second GPS HUD box may also be user defined (again the long press for the selection menu to popup) – there is a separate document on the GPS HUD.

Leg/Segment Info

Tapping on the Plan button brings up the current plan

Then if you tap on a segment or leg the info for that leg will popup. You can also set info for the leg such as POB, wind, and various times. Scroll to the bottom to see all info. 21

Segment Info The top display shows the W&B info for the leg. If you tap ‘Terrain’ the view will switch to the terrain for the segment. If you have not set up the W&B as below. See W&B docs to fix.

Tap at the top left (YWLMYCNK) to return to the plan summary screen.

Segment Info – W&B If you tap on the W&B diagram, you can set the station weights for the segment as shown to the right. Tap at the top left (YWLM-YCNK) to return.

Tap on the plan button

This displays the plan info popup. You can change various parameters here.

Other Info

Tap ‘AREA’ to fetch area winds

Tap on the aircraft to set the aircraft

Tap ‘RESET’ to reset winds to zero

First Plan When a plan is active, tap ‘Plans’ to get back to all of your plans

Airfields Page Tap the airfield to get to the first airfield page.

Airfields - COGs Tap ‘COGs’ icon to see a number of options including Printing, Add to Favorites. You may also add annotations to the page. For geo-located runway diagrams you can see your position on the runway complex. Circling areas may displayed for approach plates.
