What Does “Inerrancy” Mean: Term Defined  ‐

“Inerrancy”, properly understood means is that everything that the Bible teaches is true, or that everything that  the Bible affirms to be true is true. 

  What “Inerrancy” Does Not Mean  ‐

Inerrancy does not mean all wording is literally true  o Psalm 91:14 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge”    Inerrancy does not mean the authors can’t be Imprecise  o Numbers : It’s okay to use 13,000 when the actual figure was 13,008  o Quotations    “They will look on me whom they have pierced.” (Zech 12:10)   “They shall look on him whom they have pierced.” (John 19:37)    Inerrancy does not mean Genre and Literary instruments are disregarded  o “The whole world sought an audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.”   1 Kings 10:24  o “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”   Proverbs 22:6    Inerrancy does not mean chronology is strictly observed  o Biographies aren’t necessarily ordered according to chronology   Mark’s list of the temptations of Christ is slightly different than Matthew’s order   The cleansing of the temple happens late in Matt. but early in John 

  Rule #1: Don’t Assume the Unexplained is Unexplainable  ‐ ‐

When a scientist comes upon an anomaly in nature, he does not give up further exploration  o Rather, the unexplained motivates further study  Don’t be quick to cry, “CONTRADICTION!!!”

Rule #2: Determine If the Text Been Properly Understood  ‐

Has the text been correctly understood   o For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three  days and three nights in the heart of the earth.  (Matt 12:40)  o Does this infer 3 twenty‐four hour periods?  From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised. (Psalm 113:3)  o Does this suggest that the sun revolves around the earth?   

Rule #3: Don’t Assume a Partial Report is False  ‐ ‐ ‐

Different angles of the same single image  Different notes taken of the same lecture  Different authors recorded differing parts of the same events   

Rule #4: Don’t Assume Divergent Accounts Are False  ‐

Sometimes when we read parallel accounts of the same event in the scriptures we seem to find minor  contradictions in the way that the event is described.

The Example of Judas  So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.  Matthew 27:5    With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong,   his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.  Acts 1:18‐19

Taken very strictly, there does appear to be a contradiction!   o

Did Judas give back the money or spend it to buy a field?  

o

Did Judas hang himself or did he fall to his death? 

o

The following verses in Matthew help to fill in the blanks  

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.’  So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.  Matthew 27:6‐8  ‐

  What was the Sign Over Christ’s Cross?  o Matt 27: 37 “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”  o Mark 15:26 “The King of the Jews”  o Luke 23:38 “This is the King of the Jews”  o John 19:19 “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”

 “Many of the Jews read the sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,   and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.”  John 19:20    Rule #5: Don’t Trip Up on The Bible’s Human Characteristics  ‐ ‐

You can pick up on the human interests of the authors in their writings  Luke was a physician and a historian (gentile background)  o As a Historian    Incredibly thorough   Includes more details of our Lord’s life than any other evangelist  o As a Physician   He took special interest in the details of Christ’s miracles of healing   Devotes extra detail to disease and physical sufferings   Eg. The “Great Fever” that afflicted Peters Mother in Law (Luke 4:38)  Matthew was a tax collector (Jewish background)  o Would it surprise you to learn that he gives the most detail on the texts that refer to money?   Peter catching a fish with a coin in its mouth to pay for two peoples’ temple tax    The parable of the person who was forgiven the large debt but refused to forgive a smaller debt    The parable of the laborers who were paid the same as others who worked less.    

Rule #6: Don’t Misunderstand Based on Genre or Audience  Again he said, ‘What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a  mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of  all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade.’  Mark 4:30‐32  ‐

Let’s look at this more closely  o

Jesus is talking to a group of people that were living in an agricultural society.   

His listeners were farmers!  

o

He doesn’t say that the mustard seed is the smallest seed on earth 

o

He says that the mustard seed “is the smallest seed YOU (his hearers) plant in the ground”!  

He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.  Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that  the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.’  Matthew 13:31‐32

Rule #7: The Autographs are Inerrant, The Copies Aren’t  ‐

Might the text have been miscopied?  o 2 Sam 10:18 says 700 chariots  o 1 Chron. 19:18 says 7000 chariots  King Ahaziah  o Assumes the throne at 22 years of age in 2 Kings 8:26   o But 2 Chron 22:2 says he took the throne at 42 years of age   The latter number cannot be correct or he would be older than his father    “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than   for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”  Matt 19:24

The cool thing about most modern translations of the Bible…  o

The variations that exist in the manuscripts can be found in the margins  

o

They are presented for you to investigate them for yourself and see how important (or unimportant) the  variations are 

o

In examining this you find that the copyists were extremely honest in the way that they transmitted  these errors down through the ages  

As a result, the manuscript variations come down to us in complete honesty. 

By way of comparison, this is very different from other religions  o

In Islam, the Qur’an was compiled and preserved after the death of Muhammad. 

o

The 3rd Caliph (Uthman) standardized the text and dealt with all of the variant readings by burning the  copies that disagreed with the version he pronounced as the official version.  

They dealt with their variations with a match    “Some of them even counted the others readings as blasphemous.  That news reached Uthman as well and he rose  up and said, ‘You are in my presence, yet you disagree about it and say it incorrectly.  Those who are in faraway  regions are even in more disagreement and grammatical incorrectness.  Gather ye, O Companions of Muhammad,  and write for the people an Imam (a standard to follow)’.  Uthman also said, ‘Your prophet was just taken fifteen  years ago, and you already disagree about the Qur’an itself.’”  (al‐Sijistani)
