1

• I’ll  be  working  with  individual  departments  to  arrange  for   tours  and  discussion,  too.

• But  there  are  too  many  great  things  happening  down  at   the  STEAM  Innovation  Center  to  ask  you  to  wait  until   then!  SO  we’re  excited  to  give  you  a  great  sneak  peak   video  tour  today.     • As  you  watch  the  tour—I  want  to  remind  you  that  this  is   just  Phase  ONE  of  this  project   o This  space  is  dynamic  and  fluid       o That  means  you  can  count  on  TWO  things:   § One,  we  will  always  use  this  space  for   innovation,  learning,  collaboration,  instruction   and  discovery.   § Two,  we  will  always  be  pushing  ourselves  to   reimagine  how  we  realize  those  values  in  this   space.   § Our  constant  will  be  how  we  work  together  to   nurture  a  new  way  of  thinking  and  learning!       • So,  if  we  can  dim  the  lights—let’s  take  a  walk  through  the   STEAM  Innovation  Center!

BENDER  CLOSING  REMARKS

• Before  I  offer  any  remarks—I  would  ask  you  to  join  me  in   giving  Troy  Bonte  and  his  team  a  round  of  applause  for   not  only  offering  us  a  great  tour—but  for  shepherding   this  project  through  with  so  much  integrity  and   excellence  to  honor  the  vision  of  President  Krendl,  the   Board  of  Trustees,  Cabinet  and  business  partners.  I   appreciate  all  of  the  great  innovators  who  helped  shape  it   into  reality.     o BENDER  TO  LEAD  APPLAUSE

• In  closing—I  would  like  tell  you  the  reason  I’m  proudest   to  be  a  part  of  the  STEAM  Innovation  Center.     o It  represents  an  opportunity  to  engage  in   experiential  learning  in  a  way  that  students  simply   can  NOT  do  at  any  other  institution—working  side   by  with  faculty  and  business  partners.  It  doesn’t  get   any  better  than  that!     o Otterbein  is  standing  out  as  a  bold  leader  and   innovator  with  this  unique  approach  as  one  of  the   first  liberal  arts  infused  centers  in  Ohio.     o As  I’m  talking  to  companies  about  what  STEAM  has   to  offer—I’m  hearing  industry  leaders  say…     § How  important  it  is  to  have  students  with   experience  working  in  teams,  across   disciplines  and  with  success

3

§ How  great  it  is  to  have  a  university  willing  to   provide  opportunities  for  the  students  to   engage  with  the  business  in  more  ways  than   just  through  the  internship  process     o When  we’re  up  and  running  and  project  needs  are   being  provided  by  companies  to  the  center  here  is   how  that  will  work:       § I  have  divided  the  undergraduate  majors  into  6   discipline  based  cohorts.    A  member  from  each   cohort  will  be  selected  to  participate  on  a   project  team.     § Those  project  teams  will  have  an  MBA  student   as  the  project  manager.       § The  team  will  work  with  faculty,  staff  and   business  partners  to  complete  the  project   deliverables.     These  teams  will  be  diverse.   § Each  with  a  unique  set  of  eyes  to  envision  the   challenge  and  each  with  unique  skills  to  help   create  a  solution.       § This  is  the  kind  of  approach  that  students  will   encounter  as  graduates,  when  as  professionals   they’ll  be  expected  to  play  a  role  with  sales  and   marketing,  research  and  development,  systems   and  so  forth.

4

§ This  is  important  because  this  is  how   organizations  expect  graduates  to  be  prepared   to  engage.

• As  I  said—STEAM  is  innovation  in  its  best  form...     • And  remember,  this  is  only  Phase  One!  We  will  continue   to  look  at  innovative  ways  to  obtain  grant  funds  and  gifts   to  help  us  grow  Phase  Two  and  Three!  Exciting  synergies   and  partnerships  will  play  an  important  part  in  making   that  happen.       o The  work  of  STEAM  is  like  conducting  a  great   experiment—providing  industry  and  the  community   with  real  services  and  real  solutions—while  giving   students  invaluable  learning  experiences.       o We  are  imagining  why  and  how  students  should   learn.

o I  hope  I’ll  see  you  on  October  1st—if  not  before  then   on  a  tour  with  your  department.  I’ll  be  excited  to  see   the  Admission  Host  and  Tour  groups  come  through,   too,  either  before  or  after  their  stop  at  the   Communication  and  Art  Building!

o This  is  forward  thinking  at  its  best—and  I  can’t  wait   to  see  what  we’re  going  to  do  together.  Thank  you!     [NOTE:  Pause  for  Applause  before  transitioning  to   introducing  Joan  Rocks.]

5

• At  this  time,  it  is  my  pleasure  to  introduce  Dr.  Joan  Rocks,   the  chair  of  the  Health  and  Sport  Sciences  department.     o There  may  not  be  anyone  more  qualified  than  Joan   to  understand  my  excitement  about  the  possibilities   of  new  space  and  how  it  changes  learning.     o I  know  this  because  her  department  is  preparing  for   the  second  year  of  discovery  and  enhanced  learning   in  their  department’s  new  home!     o Joan  …

NOTE:  At  this  point,  you  will  go  to  your  seat  in  the  audience.   There  will  be  a  seat  reserved  for  you!

Contact: Jennifer Hill, (614) 823-1284 or [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 1, 2016 Otterbein Names New STEAM Innovation Center and Announces Major Gift New center will be called The Point at Otterbein University; $1 million gift from the Clements Foundation helps Otterbein surpass $31 million in campaign. Westerville, OH—Otterbein University has announced the official name and a major gift at the grand opening of its STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Innovation Center. At a wire cutting ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 1, officials announced the STEAM Innovation Center would be named The Point at Otterbein University. “The point has meaning in mathematics, engineering, technology and science, as well as art,” said Executive Director Erin Bender. “We thought of how this space is also a starting point, a launching point and a point of innovation. We thought of the design of this space and the peak that points the way to the entrance to this space, while also suggesting a convergence of numerous elements meeting to form a point.” “This building is a purposeful intersection of the best principles and strengths that education, industry, business, research and government each bring to the mix. The work that happens here will offer students, corporations and community partners alike new points of view about how things can and should work,” said Otterbein President Kathy Krendl. Seventy-five members of the Otterbein and extended community submitted names to the naming contest for the building. New Albany resident Jill McCullough, Otterbein class of 1989 and assistant director of wellness education and summer conferences in Otterbein’s Division of Student Affairs, submitted the idea that inspired the new name. In addition to the new name, officials announced a major gift to the University’s “Where We STAND Matters” campaign. The Vida S. Clements Foundation is giving $1 million to support The Point and new chemistry equipment. With this gift, Otterbein has surpassed the $31 million part in the campaign. Combined with a Turf and Track gift of $800,000, the Clements Foundation has provided the largest foundation gift to the campaign to date — over $1.8 million. Westerville residents Dr. William “Doc” Freeman, class of 1957, and Elmer “Bud” Yoest, class of 1953 and foundation board member, represented the foundation at grand opening ceremony and at half-time during the University’s Homecoming game that afternoon. “This $1 million leadership gift will support the development of the facility and the innovative concept we are here to celebrate today,” said Krendl. “It is yet one more powerful example of the legacy that Frank Clements established as an innovator ahead of his time and the philanthropic vision Vida Clements established.”

The Clements Foundation has supported numerous projects at Otterbein over the years, including the Clements Recreation Center and Roush Hall. The foundation has also made gifts in support of the Music Department, Chemistry Department, Physics Department, tours of the Concert Choir and Otterbein Marching Band and the band uniform drive. With its gifts to the current campaign, the Clements Foundation’s total giving to Otterbein exceeds $7 million. Otterbein’s students and faculty will with businesses and industry experts in the center to explore, test, invent and create new ideas for the future while getting hands-on experience that will lead to job creation and economic development for the state of Ohio. The center’s programming will engage the K-12 and two-year public education communities in developing a pipeline of students to help fill the region’s workforce needs. “The Point represents an opportunity to engage in experiential learning in a way that students simply cannot do at any other institution — working side by with faculty and business partners. It doesn’t get any better than that,” said Bender. At the ceremony, President Krendl took time to thank the many partners, including the City of Westerville, for their support, which allowed the center to open in a timeline that is responsive to the market. “We are opening the doors to this place within one year of its approval. A feat like that is ONLY possible when you have the right partners, in the right position at the right time,” she said. For more information, visit The Point’s new website at www.otterbeinpoint.com. About the Campaign Seeking to change the culture of philanthropy in support of the University’s future, Otterbein launched the largest campaign in the University’s history, the “Where We STAND Matters” campaign, to the public in September 2014. It has raised more than $31 million to date. The campaign will support three funding priorities: campus renewal; access and affordability; and building a model community. Campus renewal supports master planning and facilities updates and additions. Building a model community provides resources for departments, programs, faculty and students with funds for research, internships, travel and more. Access and affordability provides funds for new scholarships to make it possible for students — regardless of their financial circumstances — to receive a quality Otterbein education. Otterbein University is a small private university nationally-recognized for its intentional blending of liberal arts and professional studies through its renowned Integrative Studies curriculum and its commitments to experiential learning and community engagement. Otterbein is a recipient of the 2015 Carnegie Community Service Classification; a finalist for the 2014 President’s Award for Economic Opportunity Community Service; and has been honored With Distinction by the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll since the list’s inception in 2006. It stands in its category’s top 10 percent in U.S. News & World Report’s guide to “America’s Best Colleges.” Otterbein offers more than 70 undergraduate majors; seven master’s programs; and a doctorate in nursing practice (DNP). Its picturesque campus is perfectly situated in Westerville, Ohio, America’s fifth friendliest town (Forbes), just minutes from Columbus, the 15th largest city in the country. Otterbein’s commitment to opportunity started with its founding in 1847 as one of the nation’s first universities to welcome women and persons of color to its community of teachers and learners, which now numbers 2,400 undergraduate and 500 graduate students.
