This Week at First Presbyterian

Music in This Morning’s Worship Service I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also. (I Corinthians 14:15)

This Morning’s Hymns: All Beautiful the March of Days was written in 1911 by Frances W. Wile for the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, New York. The church’s pastor, Dr. William Channing Gannett, asked for a good hymn about winter and Wile chose a scripture reference of Job 38:22 –

Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? The hymn likens the snowy landscapes with the hearth of home and the handiwork of the Creator. Ironically, this “snowbound hymn” is sung to the tune Forest Green!

Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart was written by George Croly. The text is based on Galatians 5:25.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. The text emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in teaching the believer the discipline of the Christian life. Stanza one suggests that the first effect of the Spirit’s indwelling is a change of focus in life from earthly things to spiritual matters. The second and third stanzas pray for more fervent love of Christ and greater holiness in our walk with him. The final stanza is a petition for an absolute and unqualified possession by love – the result of a baptism by the Spirit of which the dove is a symbol.

Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples of the Lord was written in 1985 by Rev. H. Kenn Carmichael for The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Stewardship campaign which was entitled Called to be Disciples. Before entering the ministry, Carmichael was head of the theater department at Purdue University (1931-43). Following ordination he served as associate pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette (1972-79). His later pastorates were in California.

This Morning’s Anthem Agnus Dei Text: John 1: 29 Music: John Rutter William Blake Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, Miserere nobis. Have mercy upon us. Little lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Gave thee life and bid thee feed, By the stream and o’er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing, woolly bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice: Little lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?

Little lamb, I’ll tell thee. Little lamb, I’ll tell thee. He is called by thy name, For he calls himself a Lamb: He is meek and he is mild, He became a little child: I a child and thou a lamb, We are called by his name. Little lamb, God bless thee. Little lamb, God bless thee.

*Hymn 326 Call to Confession and Corporate Prayer of Confession “What are you looking for?” Jesus asked his new disciples. “What are you looking for?” he asks us still today. Gracious God, we confess that we are uncertain. So many things that seemed sure and good have led us astray and exhausted us. So much of what we have tried to do has disappointed those we love, failed to help our neighbors in need, and emptied us of conviction and hope. We do not know what we are looking for. Deliver us, O God, from all that is desolate and vain. Set our feet upon solid rock. Open our ears to hear you. Fill our hearts with trust and our mouths with praise for the saving help and steadfast love you show to us. Amen. (Silent Confession)

*Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Passing of the Peace of God (You may extend the hand of peace or cross your chest as a sign of blessing.) Offertory Sentence *Doxology

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow, Praise Him, all creatures here below, Praise Him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen

Donations to the Flower Memorial Fund are used to maintain fresh arrangements for the urns in the Sanctuary and for the Fellowship Tables in the Narthex. They are delivered each week by the Deacons to shut-ins and those celebrating their birthday. In loving memory of their father, Clifford J. Millhouse, by his children: Marcia, Susan and David.
