THE MESSENGER of the Calvary—Centennial Memorial Cooperative Parish

Calvary United Methodist Church seeks and invites all to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and our world.

Starting the year with a dose of REALITY... The wonderful story by Margery Williams The Velveteen Rabbit is the story of a sweetly stuffed velveteen rabbit that is received by a little boy as a Christmas present. Here is a portion of the story which describes Velveteen Rabbit discussing with the Skin Horse just exactly what really is REAL. “What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying sided by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a very long time. That’s why it doesn’t often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” My dear celebrants of Christ’s birth, we are called to become people who understand. If we believe in the mystery and love of Christmas, we do so because Somebody called God has loved us into being Real just as God loved us enough to send us the embodiment of His love in Jesus Christ. Such is the message of the manger. It keeps telling us about a God who is forever luring the highest qualities from the humblest places, turning secular settings into holy ground, and making ordinary tasks flame with special meaning. God is constantly working with us, perfecting us, purifying us and cleansing us. In this Epiphany Season where we celebrate the discovery of the Christ Child by the Wise Men, let us seek to discover what it means to have this Christ Child in our lives. Let us turn to Christ as we set our patterns for the year ahead. Let us begin our days by welcoming Christ into our hearts. Let us travel through our days acknowledging the presence of Christ and knowing that we are not alone in any of the decisions and challenges these days will bring. Let us turn away from sin and choose to go toward Christ-like actions. Let us recognize that being REAL as Christians means being and living as the Body of Christ. Hold each other in prayer throughout this year. Make efforts to deepen your spiritual life seeking to REALLY discover what it is the Lord is calling you to do and be. If it is REALLY true that “once you are Real you can’t be ugly,” go forward into this year with hope in your heart. Be glad for who you are and excited about who you will become in Christ. Seek the glory of God in Christ and there find great beauty! “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) Blessings to you and your family during this time of discovery and discernment in Epiphany! With Christ’s love, Pastor Helen

Calvary CARES Calvary takes Action to Restore, Enrich & Serve How does a patchwork quilt and a church’s congregation, such as Calvary’s, compare to each other? SUNDAYS AT CALVARY Worship with Children’s Church at 8:30 A.M. SUNDAY SCHOOL at 9:45 A.M.

First, for our purpose lets establish that a quilt is a functional cover made of two layers of fabric with a soft substance between them and stitches through all thicknesses to prevent the filling from shifting and loosing its shape. The top layer is often made of many pieces of cloth, i.e. patches of different shapes, sizes, patterns and origins brought together to form a whole unit. These “patches” are a lot like the people who make up our church family in that we all have different personalities, backgrounds, interests, needs and desires, etc. And like the pieces of a quilt we all fit together as a unit. As a congregation we worship together, support each other and care for one another in the common goal of sharing God’s love and doing what He asks of us. The bottom layer of a quilt is usually one piece of cloth and is the foundation which defines, shapes and supports the upper layers. The Word comes to mind when thinking of the foundation of our faith. Our Bible defines, shapes and supports who we are called to be as Christians. It has been here since the beginning. The soft filling in the middle of the quilt fuses with both the upper and lower layers of the quilt. Like God’s love for us, it is comforting, enveloping, warm and wonderful. It is at the center of our being and keeps us centered. It protects and insulates. It joins us together as one body in Christ. The important stitches hold all three layers together and keep them from shifting, separating and losing their shape. The stitches remind us of the Holy Spirit….perhaps less visible than all the colorful fabric of the rest of the quilt, but present, permeating and powerful. The Holy Spirit keeps us inspired, motivated and on task. The quilt symbolizes our Congregational CARES ministries. The Bible is the foundation for our faith, God’s love is what we strive to share with our companions on this planet and the Holy Spirit holds us together as He inspires us to continue to do God’s work. A quilt is constructed of many parts as is congregational care. Please ask yourself where your “patch” fits into the fabric of our caring ministries at Calvary. Visit our Calvary CARES center in the parish hall or contact Leslie Williams, Pat Herber, Susan Howe, Lee Engel or Bob Jacobs for additional information. 2

Can you feel what I feel? Something is astir within the Calvary Church Body. In the last By Bob Jacobs, Financial Secretary few months there has developed an energy of spirit in our participation of God’s plan. The Holy Spirit can truly be felt within us. There is evidence of this. Look around you! The 2014 Commitment Campaign, “Beacon of Light – Be the Light” has not ended. It will continue as more people hear the call, feel the Spirit and want to join in a faith journey. As of this writing, 200 commitments have been made for 2014. The total pledged amount is $528,672. That is only part of the story. Of the 200, 85 are new pledges and 44 have increased their pledge over 2013. This is a sign of a maturing faith in response to the Holy Spirit. Your fellow members are talking about financial commitment as a way of living their Christian faith in stewardship. Ideas, learned during the Financial Peace University held in October-November have been enacted to strengthen their financial discipline and stewardship. They affirm their lives are better and now are living examples to others. The program will be held again in February. Mission served at the Frederick Soup Kitchen 5 times this past year and several times at Centennial. We served over 400 meals to the needy in Frederick. Missions is planning a VIM project in Guatemala in the summer. Calvary is well on its way to establishing, with the Spirit of God, the Calvary Action to Restore, Enrich and Serve (CARES) to minister to those in our church family in their needs, meals, visitation, and transportation in God’s loving care through us. Can you feel it – the Holy Spirit is catching. Being a member of Calvary is being in partnership with God, following Jesus Christ and living in the Holy Spirit. 3

VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION I have read that Christianity is supposed to give us mild sense of discomfort. What do I mean by this? Most of us want to be in control of our lives. Giving up control makes us uncomfortable. However, Jesus asks us to give up control, and follow him. Our Bible tells us, "And He said unto them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). Without necessarily knowing where we are going, Jesus asks us to trust in him at all times, and to follow him on a journey that will change our lives. I am sure the Disciples felt the same discomfort at first. The word "Follow" in Matthew 4:19 means continuous action in that our faith journey will never be dull. Many who have followed Jesus through the ages have experienced how he used them in ways they did not expect. It is true! Volunteer In Missions (VIM) trips have changed me and many others at both Calvary and Centennial. Planning is underway for a VIM trip to Xequetzal, Guatemala during July 13th – July 19th. We are partnering with the United Methodist Church of Guatemala in a remote mountain village about 3hrs north of Guatemala city. The local Methodist Church was damaged by an earth quake, and repairs are needed. There will be opportunity to work with the local residents sharing the Gospel in many ways beyond construction work. NO special skills are needed, just a desire to share in Jesus’ ministry, and experience a short term missionary journey. Maybe the Holy Spirit is calling you to missions to experience our faith in a different way (short term Mission trip). We find purpose in life in many ways, but serving God's people in need is our calling. 2014 VIM kick-off meeting will be held on Wednesday January 8th, Memorial Room, at 7 pm Call or email me with any questions Ray McKinnon, VIM Chair 301-663-8786, [email protected]

"Experiencing Newness" By Leo Yates, Jr.

Second Street and Hope News As 2013 comes to a close the Board of Directors, chaired by Frank Clements, would like to take the opportunity to offer thanks for all the faithful support of this ministry. The generosity and compassion shown through gifts to Second Street and Hope have helped to feed and clothe hundreds of persons who otherwise would have gone without. As the weather has turned very cold, your support has enabled us to provide hot meals to the hungry as well as sleeping bags, tents and coats to persons living out of doors. Beginning Wednesday, January 8 we will restart our Centennial Memorial community meal (6 p.m.) on Wednesdays and will continue to welcome friends on Saturday’s community meal (4 p.m.).

As we start the New Year, there is a newness we experience. While we may initially resist change (after all, we're creatures of habit), newness can offer us all sorts of new things. At Centennial, we have a new minister of outreach and evangelism...that would be me, Leo Yates. As for me, I'm glad to be a part of a faith community that ministers to its own while ministering to its community. That is very Christlike which is appealing. Each of us has gifts for serving, sharing God's grace when we do. The blessing in that is the grace is new and fresh, not stale.

In addition to expressing our sincere appreciation, we also want to mention that we have several new and enthusiastic board members who have joined this past year: Ken Switzer, Kristen Gaynor, Paul Nelson, Steve Jarvis, and Pastors Alice Ford, George Earle and Leo Yates. Frank Clements and Pastor Helen Smith continue to serve as well. As our board expands we are optimistic of our ability to help even more folks than we already do. In addition to our new board members, we also have a new phone number 301-639-5962.

The newness of the New Year promises us traditions like Epiphany and the coming of Easter, which is not in the too far future. Many of us need something to look forward to such as these; moreover, God's promise of love and restoration in Christ is kept new. It's the newness of something to look forward to that helps get us through difficult moments and knowing this too shall pass. So, as we celebrate the New Year, let’s try to embrace the newness of what God is offering. Who knows, it could be in the newness that God is offering us peace and restoration. Who would want to miss a blessing like that?

Our goal at Second Street and Hope is to continue to make a difference in the lives of those in need and to make our community a better place to live. Your generous donations enable us to continue this important work for our community in our community. This year we have the great blessing of a gift matching program. For each dollar you give between now and January 31, your gift will be matched 1:1, doubling the impact of your gift, up to $15,000. We are grateful for all gifts. We are excited about using the gifts and talents of many to serve those who have often been marginalized and hungry for physical and spiritual food.

New Bible Study Series Begins February 13 We continue with our Dr. Ray Vander Laan series The Early Church and will meet again on Thursday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. for five weeks. This series includes travel to sites where the early Christians journeyed, input of history and cultural challenges for the day and scripture emphasis. Join us!

Expressions of Sympathy We offer prayers for the family of Carlton Calvin Barger who passed away on November 19 after having lived a wonderfully full life of 97 years. Carlton was a member of Centennial Memorial UMC and we celebrate his life. We offer to the family of Helen Van Fossen our prayers of comfort and remembrance who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 12. We think particularly of Elmira, her daughter and husband Bob Fox and Daniel, her son, and their family and friends. Helen was born February 26, 1920 and lived her life in our area having attended Centennial Memorial from her childhood forward. We celebrate the gift of her life and the shared walk with her knowing that she has been welcomed to her heavenly home where her Lord Jesus Christ has welcomed her. She will be buried along side of her husband in a private ceremony. Please keep this family in your prayers in days ahead.

Christian Education There are so many different activities, events and obligations in our lives today that we often feel we are being pulled in a million different directions. Often times we feel that we are being pulled away from our families, our friends and our church. Sadly, we might even feel that we are being pulled away from God. Maybe you know what I am talking about? So, how do we change this cycle? Especially where God is concerned? One way we can be sure we are headed in the right direction and that we are keeping God in the center of our lives is through Intentional Faith Development (also known as Christian Education). Through our choice to intentionally develop our faith, we are able to meet the God we learn about on Sunday’s, broaden our understanding of God and Jesus, have opportunity for Christian fellowship, and are held accountable for our lives and how we live them. As Christians, we are on a journey that never ends. We will never know it all, we will never have all the answers and we will never be done learning. So as the new year begins, be sure that you are looking ahead and finding opportunities to grow with God!

Presidential Volunteer Service Award Calvary has applied to become a Certifying Organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. What is this you ask? Please read on for more information!

The Background: America has a long and proud tradition of volunteer service. Now, more than ever, volunteers are renewing their commitment to help others and making new connections that bring us closer together as families, as neighbors, as communities and as a nation. The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. The program continues as an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires other to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes United States citizens and lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States who have achieved the required number of hours of service over a 12-month time period – or cumulative hours over the course of a lifetime.

Award Eligibility Any individual, family, or group can receive Presidential recognition for volunteer hours earned over a 12-month period or over the course of a lifetime at home or abroad. The following are the eligibility requirements for each age group: Kids: Age 5-14, Young Adults: Individual Age 15-25, Adults: Individual Age 26 +

Presidential Volunteer Service Award Criteria Bronze Level Kids: 50 to 74 hours Young Adults: 100 to 174 hours Adults: 100 to 249 hours Family & Groups: 200 to 499 hours

Silver Level Gold Level Kids: 75 to 99 hours Kids: 100 hours or more Young Adults: 175 to 249 hours Young Adults: 250 hours or more Adults: 250 to 499 hours Adults: 500 hours or more Family & Groups: 500 to 999 Family & Groups: 1000 hours or hours more

I would like to challenge each of us to see what we can do this year in service for others. Our year will start January 1st and go thru December 15th (so I have time to submit paperwork). In order for me to submit the requests, you will need to email me the date, where/how you served and the duration. I will keep track of the hours, just make sure to email them to me! If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected] or call me at 301-662-1464. You can also visit their website at presidentialserviceawards.gov for more information.

The program is based on 5 Key Principles to transform your body into its best at any age with fun, challenging, and effective exercise to build strength and burn fat, evidence based education from the latest research and personal success tips and strategies for success from Sandie’s journey from fat to fit, along with accountability coaching for applying the education concepts to manifest your best. ATP 16-8-2 Fitness™ was created and is facilitated by Sandie Lynch, MS, RDN, LDN, a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Personal Fitness Trainer and Integrative Wellness and Spiritual Coach. ATP Fitness was inspired by the truths Sandie discovered to live in joy and peace with her body after 20 years struggling with obesity, poor body image, and eating addictions. Sandie was obese and yo-yo dieter throughout her early adult years and finally was set free through a simple prayer. Learn more about Sandie’s her journey and her ATP 5 Key Principles during an introductory presentation coming Sunday January 5th at 12:30 in the Parish Hall. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and participate in a short exercise demonstration. Now is a great time to learn more about this opportunity. Contact Sandie Lynch at 240-439-9927 or [email protected] for more information and how to get involved in ATP!
