President’s Message

With the New Year come new beginnings. My term as President will come to an end this month as well. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to serve as your President over this past year. The Installation of Rob Wehmeier as President and our 2014 Board of Directors will be on Thursday, January 30. Watch your mail as invitations have gone out to all of you to be a part of this celebration. Be sure to send in your RSVP response so we can reserve your spot. It was truly my pleasure to get to know more about many of you. My 10 years of involvement with the Chamber has shown me that we have a great group of people on board. I was proud to serve as your President this past year. Thank you for that honor.

items from the businesses that have been affected by the La Grange Road construction project. Our hope is that these bags will encourage people to visit these establishments. As a Chamber, we felt it necessary to help these businesses through this inconvenience and also support our Shop Local Program.

In other Chamber happenings, our Ambassadors Club will be calling on new residents in the months ahead to distribute the Welcome Bags we’ve put together. These bags are filled with coupons and promotional

Thank you for all of your support throughout my term. It is my hope that you will embrace Rob Wehmeier’s term as enthusiastically as you did mine. Mayor’s News and Notes

Happy Holidays. I hope this finds all of the chamber members well and that you have enjoyed the holiday season. Throughout the holidays, the village has delivered the message “buy local,” stressing the importance of shopping locally and supporting “the home team.” We also promoted the November 30th Small Business Saturday, reminding residents to patronize the locally owned businesses at the start of the holiday shopping season and throughout the year.

LaGrange Road Project. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reports that progress on its LaGrange Road Widening Project continues. We know it’s been trying at times and we appreciate your patience. With the holidays upon us, LaGrange Road construction will continue in areas where the contractor can work off the roadway. Lane restrictions are not permitted from Thanksgiving Day through January 1, 2014; however, there may be intermittent lane shifts throughout the corridor. These lane shifts will enable the contractor to continue working on different items as weather permits and will also maintain two through lanes of traffic in each direction. Village of the Year. The Village of Orland Park was named “Village of the Year” by the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago (HBAGC), which lauded Orland Park for its community planning, growth and development.

In its assessment of the village, the association cited seven criteria that made the community stand out. Among them were the Ninety7Fifty luxury apartment development, the Build Orland Park Program that promotes residential housing, a significant increase in senior housing in the community as well as commercial and retail development.

encourage all business people to take a few minutes to explore the site and the wealth of information included on there. Right now, we are getting the word out about the village’s Code Red Notification System. This is a free service that residents and businesses can register for to receive important phone messages about timely events in your areas or general village wide community alerts.

HBAGC also lauded Orland Park for the village’s 100% transparency index rating, its focus on infrastructure improvements that include pedestrian friendly access and the village promoting itself through social media and citizen engagement.

Access the village’s website at orlandpark.org and click the large green ONLINE SERVICES tab with the mouse near the left margin. Once the screen opens, scroll down to Emergency Notification System and complete the process to sign up for Code Red. This is especially helpful for the business community, enabling the Orland Park Police Department to immediately share important information.

Business Champion Award. I was very humbled to receive the Excellence in Government Award from Moraine Valley Community College. The college’s Corporate, Community and Continuing Education Subdivision recognizes the contributions businesses and advocates make to the economic development of the southwest suburbs. The college praised our advancing the village “economically, environmentally, culturally, socially and recreationally.” Orland Park attracting new businesses, the creation of our Residential Rewards Program, Ninety7Fifty on the Park, the Taste of Orland Park and other initiatives were mentioned along with the village “maintaining its vitality and low crime rate” as we continue to grow. New Village Website/Code Red System. The village recently re-designed its website and changed the address to an easier URL --- orlandpark.org. I

Thank You, Sponsors. Thank you to the many area businesses that help to make the village’s special events possible. The Orland Park community is very fortunate to have such a generous business community. And, we send our thanks to the many businesses that created ornaments for the village’s community tree. Happy New Year. On behalf of the Village Board and the village staff, I offer to all of you our best wishes for happiness and health in 2014. Daniel J. McLaughlin, Mayor Village of Orland Park

Thomas Lydon is the owner/ operator of Keepers of Wisdom (“Keepers”). “Keepers” was started in July 2010. The company’s name derives from the Native Americans who refer to many of their family elders as Wisdom Keepers. “Keepers’ ”main goals are: 1.) document and preserve family elders life stories; 2.) provide family members with a glimpse into the family history and the life of their loved one and 3.) a chance for elders to share, in their own words, the lessons learned through their life. By knowing those who came before us, we learn more about ourselves. For more information about Keepers of Wisdom you can reach Thomas Lydon (708) 494-0127 or by email at [email protected]. Business As Usual

Plan Now for ACA’s tax-related Provisions Submitted by Kyle Vroegh, Porte Brown LLC employees and pay at least 50% of the premiums.

Companies face a variety of tax-related compliance requirements under the newly adopted Affordable Care Act. Certain small organizations may be eligible for a tax-saving opportunity. Here is an overview of the key provisions. Additional rules apply, so be sure to consult your tax advisor to determine exactly how this law impacts your organization. Premium tax credit This tax credit has been around since 2010 when the healthcare law was first passed. Certain small businesses are eligible for a 35% tax credit of the premiums they pay for their employees. In order to qualify, a business must have fewer than 25 full time equivalent

There are key changes starting in January of 2014 for this tax credit. The first is that in order to qualify for the credit, a small business must purchase their health insurance plan through the health insurance exchange. A second change is the credit increases from 35% to 50% of the employers cost. A third change starting in 2014 is an employer can only claim the credit for an additional two years. The two years do not necessarily have to be 2014 and 2015. This could be a planning opportunity if changes are expected to the amount of premiums a company will pay, or changes in the health insurance plan offered. Medicare withholding There were two major new taxes created with the passage of the healthcare law. The first being a new .9% Medicare tax on earned income. A taxpayer is responsible for this tax once

What’s Happening!

earned income is over 200,000 for single filers or 250,000 for joint filers. However, employers are responsible for withholding the .9% tax once the wages for an individual employee exceeds 200,000, and employers do not take into account the filing status of employees. This has the potential for an employee to have the tax withheld but they actually do not owe the tax when they file their 1040. If a married taxpayer earns 210,000 they will have the withholding on 10,000 of wages (the amount in excess of 200,000). However, since the threshold for a joint filer is 250,000, the amount withheld will be refunded to the taxpayer. The reverse side of this example could happen as well. If both spouses earn 190,000, neither will have the tax withheld on their paychecks, however they will be responsible for paying the portion above 250,000. Tax planning is essential in this case. Tax on unearned income The other new tax created is

commonly referred to as the net investment income tax. This is a tax that is assessed on “unearned income”. Common income sources that are subject to this tax include interest income, except tax exempt interest, dividend income, capital distributions, capital gains from stock sales, and rental income. Some income items are excluded from this tax. This includes wages, self-employment income, social security income, retirement distributions, and unemployment compensation. Operating income from pass through entities (such as an S-Corporation) where there is active participation by the shareholder, is also exempt. If the shareholder does not have active participation, the income from that entity will be subject to the 3.8% tax. Both of these lists are not all inclusive, and you should check with your tax advisor for specific situations.
