Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 1

Large Group Elevated Series at a Glance for Elevate About this Series: We use the word “Elevate” a lot, but what does it mean? To be elevated means to be lifted up, or to feel important. We like to feel elevated by others, but Jesus gives us a challenge. He says that instead of working to show others how great we are, we should elevate them instead. When we do, incredible things can happen. Memory Verse: Romans 12:10- “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.”

Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 2

Elevated Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued) Lesson 1: The call to serve When two of Jesus’ disciples asked how they could be the greatest, he gave a surprising answer. He said that to be great, we need to serve others. Jesus didn’t just say that, though. He lived it! This week, we’ll find out how Jesus served us, and learn that every time we serve others, we’re following his example. Lesson 2: Being a friend Matthew probably didn’t expect much from Jesus. He expected him to just pass by. After all, no one wanted to be seen with a tax collector like Matthew. Jesus, however, didn’t feel that way. He wanted Matthew to know that he was valuable, he was important, even though not everyone thought so. Jesus served Matthew, just by being his friend. Lesson 3: Thoughtful serving Serving others can be amazing, but where do we start? What can we do to serve others each day? The first step is to look for ways to serve. That seems easy, but there are tons of chances to serve others every day, and we miss a lot of them! In our story this week, we see Nehemiah take a break from something super important to help others, and find out how we can spot chances to serve all around us. Lesson 4: When I Serve This week, kids will see for themselves the difference they can make! They will be teaming up to serve an organization that is making an impact in their community, and serving others in a big way. Through Jesus’ story, they’ll see that even when we don’t see the results of helping others right away, it still makes a difference. Lesson 5: “You First Have you ever told someone “You first”? We usually hurry to try to be first, but what happens when we let someone else take the top spot instead? Nehemiah writes down the names of many people and families, in order to honor them. Through his story, we’ll discover how honoring others can feel pretty great for us, too.

(Roll when directed) Elevate Opener

Welcome to Elevate! Come up to the front, and let’s try something. I want to see if we can get everyone in the air at the exact same time. I’m going to count down from three, and when I say jump, jump high! Do This: Do this until the song ends or kids are all up front and ready to go. (Auto advance) Elevate Slide and Underscore

Welcome and Opening Activity

10:00

Welcome everyone! My name is __________. You can sit down, right where you’re at. This is going to be an awesome time, we’ve got a ton to do. We get to play games, sing, hear stories, and today is actually the first week of a brand new series, that I think you’ll love. In fact, I want to get the fun started right away, with a great game! This game is for everyone to play. Game Title Slide: “Team Rock/Paper/Scissors”

This game is called “Team Rock, Paper, Scissors!” It’s like the classic game of rock, paper, scissors, but a lot more fun! Instead of just using your hand, you have to go big to play this game. If you want to choose rock, curl up on the floor. If you want to choose paper, stretch your arms way up to the sky. If you want to choose scissors, clap your hands out in front of your face. Do This: Demonstrate each motion for the kids. As always, rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock. In a moment, you’ll have to find someone to face off against. You’ll stand back-to-back, and I’ll tell you to pick which thing you’re going to be. Then, I’ll start a three second countdown. On “Go,” you have to turn around and do your action! If you win, the other person joins your team! If you lose, you join the other person’s team. When you’re on someone’s Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 5

team, you have to do everything they do! Ready to give it a try? Find someone to be your first opponent! Fun game music!

3 Second Countdown (Auto Advance) Game Title Slide: “Team Rock/Paper/Scissors”

Alright, if you lost, join the other person’s team. Your teams will face off together! If you tied, nothing happens. Find another person or team to face off against! Do This: Repeat several times, until time runs out, or everyone winds up on the same team. Click on the 3 Second Countdown to repeat it each time the teacher cues you. Allow the game music to play throughout. Game Title Slide: “Team Rock/Paper/Scissors” and clear audio

Fantastic job! What teams do we have? Who thinks they’re on the biggest team? Working together isn’t always easy, but it can be awesome. You can find a spot to sit, because next we’re going to learn something about the people on our teams, with our question of the day!

Question of the Day

Question of the Day Video

(Auto Advance) QOTD Slide: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day? Turn to someone next to you and find out their answer. Then, tell them your answer, too! Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 6

Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is.

There is so much we can do, even when we can’t go outside. Today, we’re talking about something that we can do every day of the year, whether it’s sunny, snowing, or raining donuts! Before we get to that, though, there’s something else super important that we get to do. We get to worship God!

Worship

5:00

Worship Slide

“Worship” means to show God that we love him. These next few weeks, we want to get moving for God, and do some of the awesome and fun things he wants us to do. That’s why we’re kicking off this series with this song: Movin Me! Song 1: Movin Me (Auto advance) Worship Slide

We can worship God when we move and dance, and we can worship him when we’re still and quiet, too. Let’s take a moment to talk to God together. To help us stay focused on God, let’s close our eyes while we pray. God, we love you. Thank you for showing us what love looks like, help us to let everyone know who you are! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Series Title Slide: “Elevated”

Do you recognize that word up there? It’s close to “Elevate,” but really this series is called “Elevated.” We use the word elevate a lot around here, but do you know what it means? Do This: Let one or two kids answer.

When we elevate something, we are raising it up, showing how great it is. One way to think about it is like an elevator. An elevator takes you up higher and higher. We can elevate other people, too, but not by lifting them up. We can elevate them by making them feel great, showing them that they matter, and letting them know that God loves them. It feels so great when someone says something good about you, or does something good for you. We have the chance to make other people feel that way every day, when we choose to serve them.

Media

That seems like a big mission, how can we make that happen? I think the first step is checking in with our expert video blogger, Calvin. Let’s see what he is up to this week! CalQuest: (8:00) (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Elevated

What an awesome mission! Serving others is a challenge for us from Jesus himself. You and I can change the world every day when we serve, but what does that look like? This verse can give us an idea.

Memory Verse

5:00

Memory Verse Slide: Romans 12:10- Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves. Do This: Read the verse from the screen. Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 8

This is the first week we’re memorizing this verse, so let’s all try saying it together. Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

Awesome. That’s an amazing verse to remember. This verse is part of a letter written to a church in a city called Rome. That’s why the book is called “Romans.” The guy who wrote this letter was named Paul. The word “honor” in there means to point out what’s good about someone else. We like to tell people how great we are, but it takes a lot to tell people how great someone else is. If you decided to talk about how great another kid on your basketball team is, or tell your parents about something good your brother or sister did, you may not get a lot out of it, but they could feel so honored by what you said. We’re going to practice the verse a couple times. Let’s try saying it, but make every word louder than the one before it. We’ll have to start super quiet. Ready? Do This: Say the verse with the kids.

Let’s try that again! Do This: Say the verse with the kids.

Alright, this time, we’ll try saying every word more quietly than the one before. Let’s start loud! Do This: Say the verse with the kids.

Great job! We’ll keep working on this verse for the next few weeks, so keep practicing it on your own, too.

Group Activity

10:00

Know This: Since this is summer, our schedule looks different than usual. If you are able to do group time, you are encouraged to do it, as the closeness of a smaller group is a great thing for kids to experience. If you aren’t able to do this section in group time, keep following this script, and direct the activity from the stage. Do This: If you are doing this activity in small groups, direct the kids to their group leaders now. Game Title Slide: “Serving By Sight”

Our next activity is called “Serving by Sight.” In this activity, I just need to get as many ideas for ways to serve people as possible. Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 9

Game underscore.

How could you or I help someone else? How could we do something good for someone else? Let’s see how many of those things we can think of. Do This: Take 7-10 ideas from kids. Write them in black light pen all over the large pad of paper. Try to keep them separated from one another. Know This: You won’t be able to see the ink. It will look like you’re not writing anything. The kids may try to point this out. You can agree, but keep pressing on. Know This: If kids can’t think of anything, you can narrow in with a question like “What is something nice you could do for your parents?” or “What is something it feels good to hear someone say about you?” Or you could suggest a way to serve, like volunteering in Kid-O-Deo!

Great job! We’ve got all these ideas up here. Can you read them back to me? No? Why not? Oh, I guess I can’t see them either. Why is that? Do This: Inspect the pen.

Oh! This is a black light pen. We can’t see the writing in this normal light. That reminds me a little of serving. When we do something good, other people don’t always notice it. Sometimes, when we say something good about someone else, or try to elevate them, make them look good, people will actually notice them more than us. That’s not always easy, but serving is still totally worth it. Even if not many people notice, doing something good is always, well, good! Do This: Shine the black light onto the page. The words will appear.

You see, when the person you helped thinks about you, they’ll remember what you did, even if they didn’t say thank you right away. It’s like this pen. The writing was there, even when we couldn’t see it. When we serve others, it makes a difference, even if we don’t see it right away. I have a few questions for you to answer. You can talk about them with the people near you! Do This: Read each of the questions, and give kids a minute or two to talk about them.

What’s something good someone else did for you?

Have you done a “service project” before? What was it like?

Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 10

How could you serve someone at home tomorrow? Do This: Feel free to suggest some things that kids could do. Ask: “Is there a chore you could do that isn’t usually yours, or someone in your neighborhood you could try to cheer up?” Series Title Slide: Elevated and clear audio.

You all have fantastic ideas for ways to serve others.

Application

5:00

When you serve someone, it makes a big difference, and you’re doing just what Jesus did! Jesus said a big part of the reason he lived was to serve others. These are his words. Mark 10:45- “Even the Son of Man did not come to be served. Instead, he came to serve others.” Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

Jesus came to serve other people. He is God’s son, in charge of the whole world, but decided to help us, to love us, and to give his life for us. Serving others like Jesus did is one way we can change the world. You might be thinking “I’m not old enough, what can I do?” Well, I have good news, there’s no age limit on serving. You can change someone’s life, whether you are six, twelve, or twenty-two. All you have to do is find someone who needs help, and decide to do something about it. Series Title Slide: Elevated

There are people all around the world who do this every day. One of them is Jahkil Jackson. When he was nine, he started giving away bags of supplied, which he calls “blessing bags” to homeless people in Chicago. Now, he has given away over three thousand bags, and become someone who shares hope with thousands of people around Chicago who don’t have homes.

Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 11

Another example is Savanna, who is eleven. When she learned that 1 in 3 people in America is at risk of heart disease, she decided to do something about it. She started learning all she could about the heart, and releasing Youtube videos to help people take care of their hearts. She then started “Happy Heart,” an organization that helps people learn how to care for their hearts at all ages. It all started because she saw something that made her feel sad, and decided to do something about it. There are so many great things we can accomplish by serving others, and looking for ways to help them. Serving others changes our world, and it is a huge part of following Jesus. That’s what I want you to remember from today. Big Idea Slide: Jesus calls me to serve others.

Those kids saw a need, and decided to do something about it. It started small, but every bag Jahkil gave away, every person Savanna teaches about the heart, is one person whose life is changed. Every one of you can serve, too. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, singing to people living in a nursing home, finding ways to help people here in our city, or being part of a project to help people around the world, you make a big difference when you serve. Series Title Slide: Elevated

So, what can you do? Well, take a second today to look around and ask “Who could I help today?” Whether your idea is big or small, try it out! Try cheering up your neighbors with your family, or picking up trash around your neighborhood with friends. When you see a way to help others, do something!

Worship

Worship Slide

We serve because God gave us such an amazing example of how to care for and love others! So, serving is a great way to show that we love God. That’s what worship is all about, too! Let’s finish up by singing a couple awesome songs about our incredible God! Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 12

Song 2: Who I Wanna Be (Auto-Advance) Worship Slide

Our memory verse reminds us that Jesus came to serve us. The greatest way he served us was by giving his life for us, dying, and then coming back to life! He is the reason we celebrate and sing, he’s the greatest example of God’s love ever. That’s what our next song is all about. Song 2: I Will Follow You (EBC) (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Elevated

That was great, I love worshipping with all of you! You can sit down.

Wrap-Up

2:00

We’re almost done, but there’s something you should grab when you leave. Do This: Show kids the Family Connection Card.

This is our Family Connection Card. It’s a great way to show your families and friends what we have been talking about today. Be sure to grab one of these, because there’s something coming up in a few weeks that you won’t want to miss! We have a big serving week coming up, where all of us will do something great to help people right here in our city. Do This: Talk about your campus’ service project, and get kids excited to serve! You can find the information about who your campus is serving on the family connection card.

Let’s finish up by talking to God. To help us stay focused on Him, let’s close our eyes and bow our heads while we pray. God, you are amazing. Thank you for loving us, for serving us, and for sending Jesus to show us your love. Help us to share your love by serving others. In Jesus’ name, amen. Elevated Lesson 1 June 30/July 1 13
