In 2003, during her orthodontic visits, Southwood’s Dr. Dennis Claridge encouraged Kay to travel to Honduras. She hesitated—what about her kids, her husband, her job? At her final visit, Dr. Claridge agreed to remove the braces from her teeth only if she agreed to go to Honduras…. so she did! What a difference it made in our family’s lives. The next year Kay travelled to Honduras to help build our sister church, developing friendships we will have for a lifetime. What happened next was amazing. Our daughters, Shelby and Sydney, became passionate about serving and went on many mission trips that changed their lives. Sydney developed friendships she cherishes yet today. Shelby befriended a Honduran boy that grew into a young man, married a local girl, and named his baby Shelby. Both girls spent a summer teaching English to high school kids in Tanzania. They’re both pursuing careers and passions because of those mission trips. At 13, Shelby’s friend, Haley Janssen, went with us to Honduras. Now Haley lives in Honduras and helps run an orphanage. Those trips are some of the best memories we have of the four of us. We are a closer family and better people because of them. All because one humble man inspired Kay to go on a mission trip to Honduras. Now THAT is a legacy. The ripple effect from that one conversation in a dental chair so many years ago is absolutely incredible. What will your legacy be?
