Last spring I finally showed up to a QPR training through the strong encouragement of a friend. She pointed out that it was my responsibility as a future secondary math educator to be equipped for signs of suicide, self-harm and other crises. Question, Persuade, and Refer were three simple steps the training taught and I felt empowered knowing that I had the tools to help a future student. Expecting to use this on a student in the far future, I was shocked when I used it weeks later at my part-time job. Like any other work day, I was busy greeting and manning the cash register until a customer came in to let us know about a woman on the roof. She was sitting on the ledge of our building with her feet dangling, crying as she asked passersby to give her a reason to live. I told myself that I had do something to stop this situation from escalating. That’s when I remembered my QPR training. All I had to do was muster up the courage to ask a question.

“I see you are sad, what’s… wrong?”

Adrenaline rushing through my system, I stumbled through my first question. “I see you are sad, what’s… wrong?” Not even fully finishing, she heard me and let out her whole story. In front of all the bystanders videotaping and staring, we talked about her life and how horrible it was that she needed to do this to feel any love in her life and from a stranger at that. I focused solely on our conversation until the police showed up and an officer got her safely off the roof. I could speculate on what would have happened that day if I hadn’t gone out there. No one else at my job had any idea what to do and we all would have been at a loss if I hadn’t taken QPR training. I strongly encourage you to join a session in an effort to help protect and love the people of this world.
