Celebrating diversity and culture Lowell’s cultural background lends itself to a multitude of fun and diverse festivals and celebrations. Music fans in Massachusetts all look forward to the Lowell Folk Festival, the longest-running free folk festival in the United States. The three-day festival features live performances, family activities, arts and crafts and a variety of delicious ethnic foods. Lowell’s annual Winterfest weekend in downtown Lowell is a fun event featuring everything from carousels and free ice-skating to an all-you-can-eat chocolate festival to a winter market featuring arts and fashion for sale. Lowell’s diversity is celebrated during multiple annual festivals, including the Point of Light Lantern Celebration, Southeast Asian Water Festival, Brazilian Food Festival, Greek Festival, Lowell African Festival, Lowell Puerto Rican Festival, Brazilian Food Festival and the Indian Heritage Festival.

Lowell National Historical Park Lowell’s National Historic Park encompasses the entire area of downtown Lowell and offers a variety of attractions and exhibits about the history of Lowell. A popular attraction is the canal boat tours, where you can get a close-up look at the canals’ amazing engineering.

LeLacheur Park Don’t feel like going into Boston for the day to catch a baseball game? LeLacheur Park is home to the Lowell Spinners, Lowell’s Red Sox affiliate and minor league baseball team. In 2017, LeLacheur Park was named the best short-season ballpark by Ballpark Digest.

Western Avenue Studios Lowell is known for its thriving art scene. Western Avenue Studios is the largest artist community on the eastern seaboard. The building hosts The Loading Dock Gallery, a cooperative, artist run gallery. Many artists host classes at Western Avenue Studios.

Merrimack Repertory Theatre Theatre fans can visit the vibrant Merrimack Repertory Theatre. The theatre’s seven show season runs September May. Parking is free!

If you want to explore the rest of Lowell, a UMass Lowell student ID grants you free rides on the Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA) and Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA) buses. The MBTA commuter rail and Amtrak can take you to Boston, New York City, Washington DC and beyond. Boston’s Logan International Airport offers both domestic and international flights.
