Wildflower Season Off to Late Start

DR. SHAWN KHAN Central Texas Eye Institute

The year’s wildflower season may be getting off to a late start. The lack of rain has had a negative impact, but there is still optimism that when the bluebonnets bloom, they will still look beautiful, and they will not have to compete with tall grasses. Each year the beloved state flower ushers in the season that brings not only a wide variety of blooming wildflowers, but also scores of wildflower-lovers, too. These visitors translate into dollars for all of Washington County. Visitors come to gaze at the wildflowers as they take leisurely drives, and they also take part in our local festivals, shopping, dining, recreation and lodging options. For businesses that have been operating in Washington County over the past few decades, the saying is, “When the bluebonnets bloom, business booms!” The extent of this year’s wildflower blooming season is still unknown, and just how many visitors will come is also unknown. What is known, however, is that some great festivals are planned for the coming weeks. Take a look at the Calendar in this issue for dates and details and take advantage of all the wonderful activities in your own “back yard.”

On February 22, even though important bills and budget issues were being discussed at the State Capitol, the focus that afternoon changed to salad dressing, plants and ice cream. At this year’s Washington County Day at the Capitol, organized by the Washington County Chamber, several hundred state lawmakers and staff members got a chance to cool off from the hotly debated legislation with some ice cream, generously provided by Blue Bell Creameries in the prestigious setting of the Lt. Governor’s Reception Room. In addition, Del Sol Food Company provided gifts of Briannas Salad Dressing for every guest at the reception. They also donated two gorgeous gift baskets and Ellison’s Greenhouses donated two potted plants for a drawing among the House and Senate offices. The day began with all citizens from Washington County visiting both the House and Senate Chambers where Representative Lois W. Kolkhorst and Senator Glenn Hegar read resolutions about the many features and virtues of Washington County. Later, volunteers delivered special invitations to the 175th Texas Independence Day Celebration to each and every office in the State Capitol building, along with the 2011 Washington County Visitor’s guide, bluebonnet seeds, and other souvenirs. “This was an important day for Washington County in terms of exposure to state lawmak-

Leadership at the Local Level In February, the 2011 Leadership Washington County class members were given an up close and personal look at the infrastructure and inner workings of our city and county governments. Facilitators for the session were City of Brenham staff Wesley Brinkmeyer- Director of Community Services (LWC Class of 2007), Jamie Maurer-Recreation Superintendent (LWC Class of 2005), and Crystal DahlquistRecreation Coordinator (LWC Class of 2010). The day began with an extensive tour of the Wastewater Treatment plant and it really doesn’t get much more personal than that. Dane Rau (LWC Class of 2004) Assistant Director of Public Utilities, guided the group through the lab facilities and intake areas, and explained how the waste is continuously analyzed and held to very strict local and state regulations during

the treatment process. A by-product of the treatment process is a natural fertilizer that is available to local farmers and ranchers. Rau informed the class that past upgrades assure the facility is large enough for Brenham’s future growth projections. The group was treated to lunch at the Southern Flyer Café inside the Brenham Municipal Airport. Following lunch, members returned to City Hall and met with Mayor Milton Tate and City Manager Terry Roberts. They spoke about various projects and developments underway. Councilmen Charlie Pyle (LWC Class of 2002) and Keith Herring both addressed the class. They shared their backgrounds and what they have come to appreciate most about serving the citizens of Brenham. Councilman Pyle praised the Washington County Leadership program and credits his participation in the program

with placing him on the path to serving on the City Council. All the city officials reported Brenham is in a strong position even in the current economy and believe the cooperation between the City and County and the many inter-local agreements which have been negotiated contribute to the positive reports. Next came a tour of the Blue Bell Aquatic Center led by Jamie Maurer, Crystal Dahlquist and current Leadership class member, Brenda Stelwagen. The remainder of the afternoon was dedicated to County Government and began with a tour of the new County Annex building. County Treasurer Peggy Kramer spoke to members about the duties of her office. Following the Annex tour, the group moved over to the County Courthouse and visited Commissioner’s Court. Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4, James McCune,

Jr., and Precinct 3 Commissioner Kirk Hanath discussed their responsibilities in county government. The final session of the day was the County Clerk’s office. Washington County Clerk, Beth Rothermel serves as records management officer for the office. Land grants and deeds dating to the mid 1830’s were shown to the group. The county records are now available to be searched online. The March session of Leadership Washington County will focus on Agriculture & Agri-Business in Washington County. Leadership Washington County is a program of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce designed to train and motivate current and future leaders for our community. The next class will form in July. For more details please call the Chamber at (979) 836-3695.

True Texas Women at Barrington Living History Farm

Celebrate Women’s History Month and Texas History Month at Barrington Living History Farm March 26-27 from 10am - 4:30pm with the program “True Texas Women.” As men tamed the Texas frontier, the women and girls of the family often endured difficult and extreme hardships, but their determination earned them the title “gentle tamers and sun-bonneted helpmates.” Visit Barrington Farm on this special weekend and hear the sagas of these women’s lives using authentic letters and diary entries, spoken by costumed interpreters. Try your hand at making items necessary for day-to-day living, including spinning, crocheting, quilting, tatting and crafting items that pioneer women would have been proud to display in their homes. See a variety of fashions, jewelry and cosmetics that were just as essential to early Texas women as they are to women today. Learn about the significant aspects of their lives, including courting, marriage, giving birth, motherhood and mourning customs. A Great Time For Chamber Membership

In the midst of the economic recession it may seem like a challenging time to gain and retain customers. Some businesses may be hesitant to spend money on marketing and advertising, if they feel it is not a “necessity.” While moderation and wise judgment must not be thrown out, research has shown that those that keep themselves visible during economic recessions maintain and even increase their sales after the recession is over. Chamber membership may be the perfect return on their investment during these hard times.

An article published by the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania, cited a McGraw Hill Research study that looked at over 600 companies from 19801985. They found that “those businesses that chose to maintain or raise their level of advertising expenditures during the 1981 and 1982 recession had significantly higher sales after the economy recovered. Specifically, companies that advertised aggressively during the recession had sales 256% higher than those that did not continue to advertise. Companies that consistently advertise even during recessions perform

better in the long run.” Chamber membership provides not only special member benefits — access to other members, networking, events, consumer referrals, business information, etc. — but also targeted advertising opportunities. Advertising value is found in not only listing your name in the Business Directory, but the ability to include a detailed business description, hours of operation and driving directions online. This info may be modified at any time. “Free” advertising, with unlimited updates.

In addition, members can promote their business through Hot Deals, Job Postings and Events, all of which are included with your membership dues (“free”). You can gain world-wide exposure just by listing your info on the Chamber website. Little effort, widespread exposure. If you are not using the features of ChamberMaster available to you to provide these website advertising benefits, please contact us at the Chamber, so we can assist in helping you “sell” your business/organization to the world.
