Mariners pick up $1 pitcher By The Associated Press NEW YORK — Right-hander Ernesto Frieri was sold by the Texas Rangers to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday for SPORTS $1. NOTEBOOK Signed by the Rangers as a minor league free agent on June 15, the 32-yearold was 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in six relief appearances for Texas. He was assigned outright to Round Rock on July 7 and went 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA in seven relief outings for the Triple-A club. Seattle assigned Frieri to Triple-A Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League. Frieri is 11-14 with a 3.59 ERA and 73 saves in 304 relief appearances with San Diego (2009-12), the Los Angeles Angels (2012-14), Pittsburgh (2014), Tampa Bay (2015) and Texas. Seattle assigned him to Triple-A Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League. Woods pleads not guilty FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Tiger Woods will not attend his arraignment Wednesday on a driving under the influence charge, his attorney said, meaning under court rules the superstar golfer will be pleading not guilty. Woods could have agreed Wednesday to enter a program for first-time DUI defendants. He would have to plead guilty to reckless driving and receive a year’s probation. He would also have to pay a $250 fine and court costs, attend DUI school, perform 50 hours of community service and attend a workshop where victims of impaired drivers detail how their lives were damaged. Woods was arrested at 2 a.m. May 29 about 15 miles from his home in Jupiter, Florida, when officers found him unconscious in his Mercedes-Benz, which was parked awkwardly on the side of the road and had damage to the driver’s side. Woods didn’t know where he was when asked by officers and he stumbled and swayed through a field sobriety test. Woods told officers he was taking the painkiller Vicodin and Xanax, to cope with his fourth back surgery in April. He has not competed since February because of his back injury and is not expected to return this year. His last win was in August 2013. Knicks add Robinson to staff NEW YORK — The New York Knicks have hired former President Barack Obama’s brother-inlaw to a front-office position. Craig Robinson was named vice president of player development Tuesday in a series of restructuring moves that followed the promotion of Steve Mills to president and the hiring of Scott Perry as general manager. Robinson spent last season as Milwaukee’s vice president of player and organizational development after serving as head coach at Oregon State (2008-14) and Brown University (2006-08). Olczyk diagonsed with cancer CHICAGO — Former NHL forward and coach Eddie Olczyk has been diagnosed with colon cancer. Olczyk, who turns 51 on Aug. 16, had surgery last week, and Chicago Blackhawks team physician Dr. Michael Terry said Tuesday he “will be undergoing further treatment in the coming weeks, including chemotherapy.” Olczyk is a color analyst for TV broadcasts for the Blackhawks and NBC Sports.
