Marks of a Disciple - Live Truth Discussion Guide May 14, 2017 OVERVIEW Part of the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:20 includes teaching disciples to obey everything Jesus has commanded. The 3rd mark of a disciple in our current series is Live Truth. But to live truth we must recognize the source of truth, submit ourselves to that truth, and commit ourselves to learning and impressing it upon our hearts.

John 1:1-2,14 – In the beginning was the Word… o What does it mean to say that Jesus is the Word in the flesh? The Bible - God’s library of books given to humanity o How many books / authors / languages / years from Moses to John? o 1 God - encounters with the Living God written down How are we to understand that the Bible is the word of God AND has 40 human authors? o 2 Timothy 3:16-17 o 2 Peter 1:12-21
SUBMIT TO TRUTH •

Who do I listen to? Who has my ear? Who has influence over my understanding of truth? Who should I listen to? o 2 Peter 2:1-3, 17-19 false teachers o 2 Timothy 4:3 itching ears What does it mean to tremble at the word of God (see Ezra 9:4 and Isaiah 66:2)?
KNOW THE TRUTH •

A few suggestions for studying the Bible o Ask God for understanding - 1 Corinthians 2:9-10, John 14:26 o Listen to the teachers God has provided o Have your Bible with you o Persevere in your study o Teach it to someone else We cannot call ourselves disciples of Jesus (the eternal Word made flesh), but not submit to his word. And if we are disciples of Jesus, we will choose to immerse ourselves in the Word. o What does Jesus mean when you says “If you love me, you’ll keep my commands.”?

But knowing the word of truth is not enough, we must live truth. James 1:22-25 2 Peter 1:3-9 o What else do we need to live godly, effective and productive lives as followers of Jesus? o What causes us to be unproductive and ineffective? 2 Peter 3:3-5,10 heaven and earth will pass away but the Word of God is eternal May you be the blessed one of Psalm 1 !
