Marshall Lundberg

A career naval officer, I arrived on a dark and stormy night in the fall of 1969. On our second Sunday at St. Mary's, my son stood in the pew and yelled, "More singing! More Jesus!" Good thoughts but it was in the middle of the Rector's sermon; Rev. Stenning made a great recovery! Mary Kay has a more consistent attendance record, but she was doing more important things. Excepting a year in Vietnam, four years at sea and a four-year hiatus to Washington, I have been a parishioner since 1969. Mary Kay and our family never shipped out except for Washington. Involvement as a Parishioner I did things that needed doing. I headed the set-up of the now-defunct Lawn Party for more than 20 years. Along with Alex Simmons, I collected "stuff" for the auction at the Lawn Party for about the same time. I taught in the Church School for several years. I worked in the Soup Kitchen from its inception and was one of the premier scullerymen in Newport County; I also schlepped groceries and helped serve meals. I am still schlepping groceries and prepping spuds for that worthy cause. My current term on the vestry will bring my time on that august body to 18 years. In addition to that, I was the Senior Warden (2005-2008). I co-chaired the design and construction committees for the new Parish House, an effort covering over three years (2008-2012). A former rector noted that I was the perfect vestryman: size 4 hat and 19" neck. What brings me back A faithful and hard-working community of faith. Warm, purposeful and engaging people. And of course, preferred seating at the 8 o'clock service and a reservation in the churchyard.
