Business After Hours at Terra Health and Wellness Market

iMembership 101

April 7, 2016

19800 E Jackson Dr, Independence, MO

Terra Health and Wellness Market, a locally-owned health food store, hosted a fantastic Business After Hours event on April 7 with more than 30 members in attendance. If you haven’t had a chance to check out their incredible selection of locally sourced produce, high-quality vitamins, clean “Grad ‘N Go” deli, and so much more, you are missing out!

Beginning this month, the Indep Chamber will be offering a quarterly program on

how to best take advantage of your membership. For those of you who are new to

the Chamber, it will provide an overview of the Chamber’s offerings such as a list of

annual events, navigating the Chamber website and how to access and use your on-

line account. It is also a great refresher for any long time Chamber members (and will probably surprise you with our new offerings).

We will offer the program twice this month to accommodate for the anticipated attendance:

– Wednesday, May 11, 2016 3:30 - 4:40 pm – – Friday, May 13, 12:00-1:00 pm – Independence Chamber Board Room, 210 West Truman Road

Tourism Day • April 21, 2016 Monthly Legislative Briefing

The 2016 LEAD group is coming up on their last few classes! In April, they had the opportunity to tour several of Independence’s tourist attractions including the Vaile Mansion, the Three Trails Museum, and the Truman Library. As a part of their Truman Library adventure, the LEAD group also got to experience the White House Decision Center, a nationally recognized handson history lab where participants step into the roles of President Truman and his advisors, work with formerly classified primary source documents, and collaborate to tackle some of history’s greatest challenges. They ate lunch at one of the coolest restaurant attractions in town, A Little BBQ Joint, then wound up their day at the 2016 Eastern Jackson County Business Expo at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

April 15, 2016

We had a full room for the Monthly Legislative Briefing on April 15. Our State Legislators, Ira Anders, Mike Ceirpiot, Billy Kid, John Rizzo, and Rory Rowland, reviewed many of the current legislation issues touching on education, gender neutral bathrooms, dog breed regulations, tax code changes, and workforce development.

Next month is Health & Wellness Day and their last class. Graduation will also be the same day so be on the lookout for graduation photos! May 2016 :: THE CHAMBER VIEW

Legislative Hearings

Member News

The Public Policy Committee has again set dates to receive recommendations for needed legislation or legislative changes from our membership and strategic partners. Testimony is being sought on issues that will or should be considered by the legislative bodies of the City of Independence, Jackson County, the Missouri General Assembly, and the United States Congress.

Two public hearings have been set for the following Mondays: July 18 • July 25 Each scheduled hearing will last from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and be held in the Chamber Boardroom. Presentations will be scheduled in 15-minute intervals beginning at 4:00 pm. Members desiring to address the Public Policy Committee during one of the scheduled public hearings are asked to contact Lois McDonald at [email protected] or 816-252-4745 (ext. 2) to secure a time slot on the agenda. The input received from the public hearings forms the basis for the items or issues considered by the Chamber for inclusion in the Chamber’s 2017 Legislative Agenda. Items identified through this process will be explored, debated, and prioritized by the members of the Public Policy Committee during the early fall and forwarded to the Chamber Board of Directors for final consideration in November. The approved 2017 Legislative Agenda will be published and distributed to all members of the Chamber.
