Spirit of Mission: The Georgia Bates Award Luncheon
Monday, May 2 11:30am to 1:00pm HPUMC Great Hall
HPUMC United Methodist Women is pleased to announce that the 2016 Georgia Bates Award will go to Dr. Barbara “Bobbie” Baxter, a woman who exemplifies a spirit of mission that models the standard set by the award’s namesake during her lifetime of service in Dallas.
Bobbie Baxter founded Agape Clinic in 1983 to provide free medical care to low-income patients in Dallas. The clinic, which began seeing patients one day a week in a basement closet of Grace Methodist Church, grew to a clinic administering immunizations and general health care services to the medically underserved. It now operates six days a week and provides services valued in excess of $5 million to over 10,000 patients each year. Agape Clinic’s success is the result of a dedicated medical team that gives thousands of primarily volunteer hours to the care of patients who might not otherwise have access to medical care. The clinic exists now offers subspecialty care in ophthalmology, dermatology, women’s health, orthopedics, allergy, and counseling. Agape Clinic is but one of the beneficiaries of Dr. Bobbie’s passion for service. She works with aspiring allergy doctors in the Parkland Clinic by volunteering as a Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at UT
The President’s Message Dear UMW Friends, Reflecting on the Lenten and Easter season, I can’t help but continue to contemplate the sacrificial love that Christ exhibited for you and me. As humans, we think of love as a feeling, an emotion. Our deepest loves may be our spouse, our children, our parents. We may feel genuine love for our friends or our pets. We may thoroughly enjoy our career or a hobby to the point of saying we love them. These loves produce feelings of joy, happiness, tenderness, devotion, and attachment. Agape love, the love exhibited by God in the sacrifice of His only son, Jesus Christ, is a different kind of love. Agape is love at it’s most ultimate. It is not like the love between a husband and wife. It is not like a brotherly love. It is the most self-sacrificing love that there is. In John 3:16 it is written,

SUMMERTIME AND UMW! “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” How can we, as God’s children, show this type of Agape love of self-sacrifice to others without expecting anything in return? The scripture commands us in Ephesians 5; 1-2, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” In this spring of renewal and rebirth, I urge every one of us to find a way to demonstrate this type of Agape love in the giving of our time and helping those less fortunate, thus showing God’s ultimate love to others as He has shown to us.

Although, UMW will be taking a break over the summer months from our regular programs and Circle meetings, that doesn’t mean that we won’t have wonderful opportunities for service and fellowship during June, July and August! The wonderful missions we serve always welcome your support and participation. What a wonderful opportunity to take your children with you to visit residents at C.C. Young, or for you and a friend to find out how you can volunteer at Wesley-Rankin summer camps. At the March HPUMC UMW dinner program, members, guests, and friends were intrigued by Louise Troh’s powerful story of faith during her experience of her fiancée’s death due to Ebola. We learned about the faith community’s support of her and her family. Reverend George Mason from Wilshire Baptist Church shared details of his church’s response and those of County Judge Clay Jenkins, who was in attendance for this event with his wife, both HPUMC members. Many attendees left with autographed copies of Ms. Troh’s book, My Spirit Took You In: The Romance that Sparked an Epidemic of Fear, A Memoir of the Life and Death of Thomas Eric Duncan, America’s First Ebola Victim. Special thanks to UMW Assistant Program Chair Ashley Rasmussen for bringing this insightful program to us!
