MINING
We started this journey more than a decade ago. A group of hardworking people with a new technology that no one had ever seen. One that had the potential to change the cut and puncture safety market. One that could save the lives and livelihood of workers across the world. So we started with one industry. And one glove. We changed and altered and tested and trialed until we successfully eliminated all hand injuries for a large waste and recycling company. Eliminated – as in zero – none. That’s when we knew we had something.
Our thought was: If we stopped dictating the safety products people used, and started working one-on-one with people to develop the safety product they actually need…well, we’d have something pretty unique for this industry. Not to mention, we’d be able to change the conversation from price and product to “is this the right PPE to effectively reduce injuries and protect our people?” It was possible, but it wasn’t simple. We set off to work with people, side-by-side, day after day to experience the kind of dangers and hazards they encountered. From there we grew and expanded our hand safety line one industry at a time – with our team of safety advisors hitting worksites and manufacturing floors, working handin-hand with their workers, listening to their input, and giving them the protection they deserve. And that’s what’s most important to us. Because, in the end, we aren’t just gloves and PPE. We’re the confidence, safety, and livelihood of those we protect. HexArmor. We’re Safety, Redefined.

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE MINING APPLICATIONS AND HAZARDS HEXARMOR® HAS HELPED COMPANIES OVERCOME WITH OUR INDUSTRY-LEADING PPE SOLUTIONS.
ROOF BOLTING Roof bolting – sometimes known as top bolting – is widely considered to be the most dangerous job in underground coal mines. There is the ever present danger of a falling roof, and roof-bolting machines used in this application create additional hazards. According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational Accidents, roof-bolter operators with less than a year of experience tend to incur approximately five times the number of accidents as more experienced operators. Mine workers who do roof bolting are exposed to falling rock, sharp edges from “pizza pans” and drill bits, and heat from drill bits. HexArmor® worked with one of America’s leading producers of coal to find a solution to keep their roof bolters safe: the Rig Lizard® 2025.
CONVEYOR BELTS In almost all mining operations, high capacity industrial belt conveyors are used to transport ores throughout the mine or production facility. These belts require continual maintenance and a hazardous job for maintenance crews. Workers are often positioned on their knees, using two-handed box cutters or mill knives to slice thick belts of fiber and steel, pulling the blades directly toward them. HexArmor® worked with the safety team at a major mining company to engineer a cutresistant chap to protect workers from these dangerous blades. After introducing the HexArmor® 9911chaps, the company was able to completely eliminate conveyor belt maintenance injuries.
DRILLING/SERVICING Mining companies usually work with contractors to perform drilling/servicing work, which involves pulling slips, working tongs, tripping pipe, and making/breaking connections. The heavy pipe and tooling used in these applications presents serious impact hazards. In addition, some pipes, chains, and tools have burrs – so puncture protection is also a necessity. Grip needs vary depending on the contractor, because each uses a proprietary lubricant. HexArmor® offers a wide range of grip and palm dip options, so we can help you provide your contractors with the right hand protection for the job. For drilling and servicing, we recommend looking at the GGT5® and Rig Lizard® Series gloves, which provide high levels of cut, puncture, and impact protection with a range of grip options.

TRUCK SHOP FLY METAL A common hazard in mining truck shops is fly metal, usually from changing out teeth on a loader. The metal used in the pins is not as strong as the pipe, so the pins explode and become shrapnel. Virtually the entire body is at risk of being pierced with fly metal, so truck shop workers typically wear leather jackets and chaps. The problem is these are hot, heavy, and smelly. Our customers found a better alternative: HexJackets, Aprons and Chaps made with SuperFabric® brand materials. These provide the highest level of protection from fly metal in a product that’s lightweight, comfortable, breathes better and lasts longer.
GENERAL MINE WORK Workers are exposed to falling rock, general cut hazards, and their job involves handling heavy tools. The Rig Lizard® 2090 is the ideal all-purpose mining work glove, and has become widely used in mines across the globe. It’s comfortable enough to wear all day without causing hand fatigue, and workers like that it provides the dexterity and tactile sensitivity they need to do their jobs. It also delivers impact resistance to prevent injuries from falling rocks and pinch points, and protects from cut hazards.
“HexArmor hand protection is far superior to any other glove I have used. Anything coming into contact with my hand was easily dampened by the padding, and that is a very big deal when nothing I work with weighs less than a couple hundred pounds.” Jim M., Mining Engineer

SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES and TESTING SMASH INJURIES: AN ALL TOO COMMON OCCURRENCE
Falling rocks and heavy tools are a fact of life for mining workers. Consequently, painful smash injuries – which can be serious – are a frequent occurrence. Employers have made an effort to address this problem by including impact protection in their hand safety standards.
NOT ALL IMPACT GLOVES ARE CREATED EQUAL In recent years, “impact” gloves have flooded the PPE market. And while some believe these are interchangeable, the truth is not all impact gloves are created equal. They offer varying levels of comfort, dexterity, and – most importantly – protection. Our patented IR-X® technology shields gloves with a full Impact Exoskeleton™, so every joint and knuckle is protected. Gloves with HexArmor® IR-X® impact protection have been proven to reduce and even eliminate smash injuries on the worksite.

HexArmor’s proprietary IR-X® impact technology is proven to dissipate the force of sudden impact, smash and pinch hazards. HexArmor has instituted testing using a load cell sensor. This tests both the amount of force transferred through the impact protection to the hand while wearing a glove, and the amount of time the force is felt. We have found strong evidence that our impact protection minimizes the amount of force felt through the glove, as well as lengthening the amount of time force is transferred. Together, these two factors help diminish or eliminate possible impact injuries. This testing, along with our high-flex design, is what makes it possible for our IR-X® Impact Exoskeleton™ to deliver more comfort, more protection, and more dexterity than any other impact glove on the market.

PRESSURE SENSITIVE FILM IMPACT TESTING
IN-HOUSE IMPACT TEST USING PRESSURE SENSITIVE FILM
More intense color indicates more force transferred through the impact guards.
In addition to the ASTM resiliency tests, HexArmor® performs thorough field studies and in-house impact testing to validate protection levels. One of these lab tests uses pressure sensitive film (PSF) to measure the amount of force transferred through a glove’s impact guard in the event of a sudden blow. PSF is a highlysensitive and extremely thin film that reacts to pressure by creating a high resolution “topographical” image of impact distribution and magnitude across the contact area.
HexArmor® Rig Lizard® Series® Impact Metacarpal Profile
MetaMiner® Impact Metacarpal Profile
6 | HexArmor® Mining
For this in-house test, the pressure sensitive film is placed under impact guards, and a hammer is dropped to simulate a worksite smash incident. After impact, the film is removed and scanned through specialized software to reveal the pressure distribution profile. The more intense the color, the more force was transferred through the impact guard. In the real world, this translates to a more severe potential injury. PSF results are highly accurate. In fact, the U.S. Army uses the system for designing their soldiers’ vests and body armor. This is just one of the ways HexArmor® continues to be a leader in technology and innovation, redefining standards of safety in the industrial sector.

Cut Resistance SUPERFABRIC® PREVENTS LACERATIONS Workers are exposed to cut hazards on a regular basis as they are doing their jobs. HexArmor® gloves are built with high-quality, proven materials that have been shown to prevent lacerations. The foundation of HexArmor Elite® products is SuperFabric® brand material, a proprietary technology that resists lacerations and slashes like no other material on the market.
COMPARING CUT RESISTANCE: HOW PROTECTIVE ARE YOUR CUT 5 GLOVES? Although many gloves claim to have level 5 cut resistance, it’s not always obvious whether they mean ISEA or CE level 5. These ratings are determined using two different cut testing methods. And although both produce results rated on a 1-5 scale, these scores are not interchangeable. This can be confusing, and is used by some glove manufacturers to promote their products as being more cut resistance than they actually are. HexArmor® tests products against the highest possible standards, and many of our gloves exceed the industry’s highest protection levels (ISEA and CE Level 5). And for applications that don’t require the maximum amount of cut resistance, we’ve developed purpose-built solutions that give you the protection you need most, where you need it.
8 | HexArmor® Mining
Puncture Resistance MOST LACERATIONS BEGIN AS A PUNCTURE Cut protection isn’t complete without puncture protection. The cut resistant materials commonly found in cut-resistant safety gloves – blends of yarns such as Kevlar® or Dyneema® – provide some level of protection from straight-edged hazards. However, they don’t offer sufficient protection from variable hazards such as metal burrs, wires, jagged rock, or slivers commonly found in mining environments. When a sharp corner, burr, wire “wicker” or other protruding hazard comes into contact with the hand, it can penetrate the glove and scrape or cut the skin. With high-performance fiber knit gloves, the hazard will poke through the knit shell of the glove and tear laterally to create a laceration. Gloves that have cut resistance often lack the puncture protection needed to stop lacerations. HexArmor® mining safety gloves are proven to protect against cuts and punctures. We test our gloves both in the lab and out in the field to validate their performance. Our data shows that HexArmor® gloves deliver the highest degree of puncture and cut resistance performance.

CONVEYOR BELT SPLICING: ONE OF MANY HAZARDOUS MINING MAINTENANCE TASKS Engineering the right type of PPE for mine workers and maintenance crews is critical in keeping ores and base metals moving efficiently and productively around the world. In almost all mining operations, high capacity industrial belt conveyors are used to transport ores throughout the mine or production facility. The belts in these conveyors are subjected to tons of rough ores and metals each day, and continually require maintenance to splice frayed belt pieces back together. Splicing is hazardous work for maintenance crews: one inch thick belts (sometimes constructed with fiber and steel) are sliced with hand-held knives before being spliced back together with steel staples. Maintenance crews are often positioned on their knees during these dangerous cutting operations and must pull knife blades directly toward them - not the most ideal work environment. Recordable injuries from deep punctures and lacerations are often serious - and in some cases, life-threatening. HexArmor® Engineered a New Level of Protection Against Punctures and Lacerations with the Development of a Dedicated Conveyor Belt Chap HexArmor® designers and engineers answered the call of a major mining company that had been experiencing a high level of recordable injuries (punctures and lacerations) in its belt conveyor splicing operations. After conducting an on-site review of the company’s maintenance operations, and working directly with the company’s safety committee, HexArmor® engineered a conveyor belt chap designed to deflect the cutting blades and knives used in belt splicing maintenance. The result: belt conveyor maintenance and installation injuries were completely eliminated after the introduction of the HexArmor® chap. PRODUCT SOLUTIONS - HexArmor® Chaps 9911 The 9911 HexArmor® Chap completely eliminated belt conveyor maintenance and installation injuries. HexArmor® with SuperFabric® brand materials provides the highest cut resistance in the industry today – exceeding today’s ISEA Level 5 and CE cut resistance ratings. The cut, puncture, and abrasion resistant 9911 chap provided mine maintenance workers with full front and back leg coverage plus a double-layer knee patch to reduce wear in specific splicing task positions. The 9911 chap was developed with extra room in the thigh area to offer easy movement and comfort, not to mention the chaps are cooler and lighter than the leather alternative products. Another benefit is that the chaps are fully washable, lowering replacement costs and improving hygiene.

Cut Standards Explained As of February 2016, the standards as outlined in the ANSI/ISEA 105-16 American National Standard for Hand Protection Selection Criteria have changed and changes have been proposed to the EN 388 European regulatory standard for protective gloves (CE). The new glove standards will enable safety managers to choose the proper hand protection with greater precision and accuracy. Understanding the Changes to the ANSI/ISEA 105 American National Standard for Hand Protection In an effort to apply consistent meaning to ANSI/ISEA 105 cut ratings for the end user, a single test method has been selected for establishing cut level (ASTM F2992-15). In addition, the number of classification levels has been expanded both to address the gaps between particular cut levels and to model the classification approach used in similar international standards. The standard employs a new, 9-level scale (expressed as A1-A9) that spans 0 grams to 6000 grams of cut resistance. This allows for more accurate identification of the protection offered by hand protection. The most significant change calls for cut level 4—which ranged from 1500 grams to 3500 grams of cut resistance —to be divided into three separate levels. The more granular rating allows end users to more precisely identify a level of cut resistance that meets a specific need. The following chart shows the changes: ANSI/ISEA 105 Cut Resistance Testing: In addition to a more accurate cut resistance classification scale, the ANSI/ISEA 105-16 references only the Tomodynamometer Test Method (TDM) based on the ASTM F299215, discarding the Cut Protection Performance Tester (CCPT) method formerly recognized as an alternative test. The TDM determines the amount of weight, measured in grams, necessary for a blade to achieve cutthrough of PPE material at the reference distance of 20 MM of blade travel. This is a change from the old standard, which called for a blade travel of 25 MM.

Understanding the Proposed Changes to the EN 388 European Standard for Cut Resistance A number of important changes have been proposed to the EU cut resistance standard, EN 388. Most notably, the changes address inconsistencies with the Coup Test and provide additional cut levels for highly cut-resistant materials. As of February 1, 2016, these changes have not been appoved or implemented by the EU.

Cut Resistance Classification The EN 388 standard currently requires the Coup Test and recommends the ISO 13997 which uses the TDM test method for high cut-resistant materials. The proposed changes will require the use of both the Coup Test and the ISO 13887 for high cut materials. An additional rating will be added to the current 4-digit EN 388 score. EN 388 Cut Resistance Testing: In the Coup Test, a circular blade moves back and forth across a material sample under a fixed load of 500 grams (5N, a very low force, amounting to less than 1 lb). The number of blade revolutions needed to cut through the material is then compared to a control sample. The ratio of the same to the control is converted to an index that is applied to a 5-point rating scale—1 (low) to 5 (high). The Coup Test is not recommended for rating high cut-resistant materials, which dull the blade quickly resulting in an inaccurate representation of the protection provided by such materials. For high cut materials, the ISO 13997 test method is recommended. This test uses the TDM machine, which measures cut resistance using a straight blade and variable weight, like the ANSI/ISEA 105 cut test. The ISO 13997 reports results in Newtons and reports scores 4 and 5, which can replace the Coup Test score on the CE marking. North American Manufacturers and Distributors Are Not Required to Certify Their Cut Resistance As the CE is the only certification-requiring body, vendors of safety gloves in North America are able to sell gloves without ever testing them for cut resistance. If they elect to test them for cut resistance, they are able to use any method they choose. Furthermore, the CE certification does not require the ISO 13997 for highly cut-resistant materials, but only recommends it. As such, a manufacturer of PPE in North America could feasibly run the EN 388 Coup test on a cut-resistant material and, due to the nature of the test, return dramatically inaccurate results that portray the material to be far more resistant to cuts than it is in actuality. It is extremely important to gather information both about the material used in PPE, as well as the methods by which it is tested, before continuing with a purchase decision. The Employer Is Ultimately Responsible for Providing PPE That Meets Employees’ Needs Per OSHA regulations, the final burden of responsibility concerning cut resistance falls on the employer. Though testing regulations and certifications are a viable starting point for a purchase decision process, they are never to be taken as a validation of the inherent protection offered to an employee. Cut-Resistant PPE Manufacturers and Suppliers Can Provide Further Understanding of Cut Testing Ask them questions, and seek thorough explanations for the methods that they have selected to test their products. More information on each of the tests listed can be found on these websites: • www.astm.org

TP-X®
TP-X® is a palm material that works well in oils and fluids because the surface does not absorb wetness, helping to maintain grip. Best for light to medium oily or wet conditions. Provides more abrasion resistance than synthetic leather, and some industrial puncture resistance.
TP-X+®
TP-X+® is a robust, heavy-duty material that provides additional cut, puncture, and abrasion resistance and improved grip. The raised texture creates channels or grooves in the material, so it has enhanced grip over time. Also provides additional resistance to heat.
HexArmor Mud Grip®
Synthetic leather palm with PVC dots. The surface wicks away lubricant, allowing PVC dots to create friction and improve grip on metal tools. Good grip in the wet conditions sometimes found in certain mining processes. Excellent dry grip for general tasks.
Silicone Grip
Durable synthetic leather palm with heat-resistant hi-vis silicone pattern delivers maximum grip and dexterity. Best for regular or wet conditions. Provides more abrasion resistance than synthetic leather.
Gator Grip Technology®
A highly specialized SuperFabric® brand material palm with PVC dots. The SuperFabric® guard plates bite through and channel away lubricants, creating a “snow tire” effect that allows the user to grip oily or lubricated parts and tools. The PVC dots provide added friction for a tacky grip.
Synthetic Leather
Our synthetic leather is the highest quality, so it’s extremely abrasionresistant and durable, and lasts longer than other gloves. Some products combine the synthetic leather with PVC print for enhanced grip capabilities. Mining companies and contractors have used this grip successfully for general facility and maintenance applications.
14 | HexArmor® Mining
Wrinkle Rubber Latex
Wrinkle rubber latex is a flexible, non-porous palm dip that provides excellent dry grip. It offers good wet grip, but is not recommended for use with hydrocarbon and organic solvents such as gasoline as these can cause premature degradation. This polymer may cause allergic reactions in some people.
PVC/Nitrile
Premium PVC nitrile blend is often used in gloves designed for liquid and certain chemical resistance. It is an effective barrier against water and most watery solutions, such as detergents or diluted acids. Because PVC is 100% synthetic, it contains no latex proteins and is hypo-allergenic.
Sandy Nitrile
Sandy nitrile provides a good dry and wet grip. It is lightweight, providing excellent dexterity, and it also adds a high level of abrasion resistance. A good choice for incidental contact with unknown substances such as solvents, chemicals, oils, etc.
Foam Nitrile
Foam nitrile excels in wet conditions, and it offers excellent oil grip because of its porous properties. Oils are channeled away from the surface of a tool, allowing for more contact with the surface area, which substantially improves grip.
FR-Compliant Coating
Our FR-compliant palm dip increases snag and abrasion resistance and offers exceptional dry and light oil grip. Paired with a flameresistant knit shell of 13-gauge Kevlar® and wool, it can provide hazard risk category HRC level 1 arc flash protection: ATPV 7.7 cal/cm2, and contact heat protection up to 100°C (212°F).
Polyurethane
Polyurethane (PU) provides excellent dry grip that offers a balance between being tacky but not too sticky. It’s a lightweight dip, helping gloves maintain a high level of dexterity and tactile sensitivity. As such, PU is good for handling small parts.

Stay Safe and Stay Dry
If you’re working with oils, muds, and other liquids all day long, you know how uncomfortable it can be to wear saturated gloves. Not only is it unpleasant, but some substances can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. The HexArmor® liquid/chemical resistant series was developed to keep oils, muds, and other liquids out of the glove and away from your hand, all day long, so you can work safe while staying dry.
40 | HexArmor® Mining
Resist Impacts. Revolutionize Safety. Workers who deal with slippery or hazardous liquids face a tough choice every day: to sacrifice protection for grip, or grip for protection? With growing concerns about the long-term health of workers exposed to OBMs and other fluids, HexArmor believes no one should choose between getting the job done and their personal safety. The HexArmor Ugly Mudder™ series combines liquid resistance with back-ofhand impact protection and a PVC coating for an unbeatable combination of durability and grip. PVC/Nitrile Coating
Every component from the comfortable inside liner to the durable outer layer adds to the total performance of the Ugly Mudder™ series, which is why we only use quality components and construction. These are much more than gloves, they are a complete hand safety system.
Encapsulated Impact Guards
Premium Liner
The Liner Ugly Mudder™ gloves feature a premium medium-weight liner for increased strength, durability and comfort.
The Coating A premium PVC/Nitrile coating provides exceptional protection against liquids and chemicals, and a softer feel. This single coated layer is cured at a high temperature, ensuring optimized curing and chemical cross-linking. The 7212, 7213, and 7310 feature a particle PVC palm for an enhanced grip.
Impact Protection The Ugly Mudder™ series is designed to protect workers’ hands from a wide variety of impact hazards. Encapsulated impact guards are integrated within the outer coating, leaving no gaps between the knuckles providing continuous impact protection from fingertip to wrist.

Apply water to eVapora™ material.
Recently, OSHA launched a campaign to raise awareness of heat stress and heat related illnesses (HRIs) in the workplace. Heat stress and HRIs occur as a result of heat exposure – even short periods of high temperatures present the risk of serious health problems. Fortunately, HRIs are also one of the most preventable work-related illnesses. To help you battle heat stress and keep your employees safe, comfortable, and productive, HexArmor® is excited to announce our newest product line, ColdRush®. The ColdRush® personal cooling system is a line of products made with eVapora™ technology, an advanced hyper-evaporative material that helps keep body temperatures in check. Because ColdRush® is highly absorbent, it works fast, retains moisture and the cooling effect lasts for hours.

Give Disposable Booties the Boot
Say goodbye to dirt and grime and say hello to YULEYS® from HexArmor®, the reusable, slip-on boot cover that’s helping even the dirtiest jobs clean up their act. The typical disposable booties are slippery and expensive, and after spending one day on the job, they spend a lifetime in a landfill. YULEYS® can be easily slipped into and used thousands of times, while providing greater traction and protecting floors and walls.
50 | HexArmor® Mining
Industrial-Strength Footwear for Any Industry Fast. Cost Effective. Clean. Save money by replacing disposable booties with YULEYS® reusable work boot covers. On average, a box of disposable booties costs $10 for 100 pairs. If 1 worker enters a residence an average of 7 times a day, that would be $.70 per day; multiply that by 5 days a week, and you’ve got $3.50 per week. Multiply that by 48 working weeks a year, and your grand total is $168/year per worker. These industrial-grade work boot covers are a perfect fit for in-home service workers, industrial workers entering sanitary work areas, food prep and agriculture, and people working in clean rooms and sterile environments. Save yourself the time of taking off your boots, or the cost and inconvenience of going through boxes of disposable booties, and take a step in the right direction.
Leaner. Cleaner. Greener. Millions of booties are disposed of every day. YULEYS® work as hard as the people who wear them, and are built for heavy use. If they ever need to be replaced, they can be easily recycled and given another life.
YULEYS® Clean Step System • Hands-free on-and-off • Heel-lock system • Flexible design • Anti-slip tread • Specifically designed for steel-toed boots • Recyclable, reduces effects on landfills • Available in standard TPR and industrial-grade SEBS rubber • Available in blue, gray, and red Visit yuleys.com for sizing

TRIR and Your Bottom Line Your Safety Record Helps You Win (or Lose) Business. Companies with a great safety record are companies that win business. The reverse is also true: companies with a poor safety record are not only at risk of losing profitable contracts in the bidding process, but also of losing existing business to competitors with a better safety record. Safety is considered an indication of an organization’s efficiency. If your safety record is poor, it’s often indicative of other systemic problems, making that company a less attractive partner for doing business.
TRIR: The Most Important Safety Metric. Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is a commonly used safety metric that measures the effectiveness of a company’s safety measures. Your TRIR is an indication as to whether or not employees are being injured in the workplace. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, TRIR can help determine both problem areas and progress in preventing workplace injuries. This is the key performance indicator companies use to track progress toward a zero injury goal.

Workplace Injuries INDIRECT COSTS OF AN INJURY The direct costs associated with a recordable incident are fairly well understood. They include the medical costs, worker’s comp and other insurance premiums. But when one of your workers suffers an on-the-job injury, it is the indirect costs that account for the majority of an accident’s economic impact. These can be up to 10x more than the direct costs. Types of Indirect Costs:
Time-Related Costs These go well beyond the obvious, and include more than just the injured party and his or her direct supervisor. Examples: Overtime costs necessitated by the injury. Administrative time spent by supervisors, safety personnel, and clerical workers after an injury. Time spent investigating and reporting the accident. Time to assist in production and address production problems, and time spent training replacement workers.
Productivity Costs Labor productivity relates output to the labor hours used in the production of that output. Frequently the biggest indirect cost of an injury, productivity costs can be 7.5 times or more than the total direct costs of the incident. Examples: Actual lost production by the worker, those assisting, and onlookers. Reduced productivity from injured worker upon return, and lower output from a replacement worker until they are fully trained.
Material/Equipment Damages This category is somewhat obvious, but often overlooked. Examples: Replacing or repairing damaged equipment. Renting equipment to limit downtime, if needed. Material damages are important, as they represent lost potential sales.
Insurance/Legal Beyond the immediate costs of a worker’s comp claim, an accident can result in additional insurance or legal expense. Examples: Surcharges or an increase in insurance premium. OSHA, state, or federal fines.
Morale/Reputation These are intangible costs, impossible to quantify in hard numbers, but should be taken into consideration even if this type of cost is difficult to accurately measure. Examples: Lost morale for workers, damage to your reputation for customers, potential to lose business based on bad reputation, loss of good will from bad publicity.

How to Run a Glove Trial A glove trial is the process of field-testing different models of safety gloves, either from a single source or several manufacturers, in order to identify the best glove for a particular job. When done correctly, the benefits of a glove trial include: • I mproved hand safety program and equipment, and reduced rate of hand injuries • I ncreased awareness of hand safety issues among workers • Higher rates of compliance with hand safety PPE requirements •R eduction in costs related to hand protection, through increased efficiency and durability of work gloves, or reduced insurance rates, medical costs, and worker’s comp claims Because work conditions vary from one job to another, there is no way to tell how effective a particular safety glove will be without testing it in the field to see how it holds up, and protects against the actual hazards encountered in the workplace. Although a glove may have tested well in laboratory settings and been granted a high cut rating, it may lack abrasion resistance and break down quickly in the field. If a glove doesn’t offer the same level of protection at the end of the work day as it does at the beginning, then you need to consider another option. To ensure you avoid wasting time and energy on a poorly-run glove trial, we have outlined a set of proven steps you can take in the glove trial process. These tips and recommendations come from over a decade of experience working with large industrial companies. How to Properly Care for Your Gloves Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE. It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities, and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering, but also proper storage, routine glove checks, and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses. Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers’ gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they’re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric®, Kevlar®, and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for, and oftentimes there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial.
PROPER STORAGE Gloves should be ideally stored in clean, dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
ROUTINE GLOVE CHECKS Glove life varies depending on the application, environment, and amount of use. Because of this, it is vital that you perform routine glove checks before beginning work every day. Take note of areas that have begun to wear down, such as loose Velcro® or a worn-down name tag. If you see holes in the synthetic leather or TP-X® material on the palm of your glove, this is an indication that its protective qualities may be compromised, putting you at risk of injury. Lingering moisture or a strong odor are also signs that your gloves may need to be replaced. Keeping an eye out for these issues and others keeps you one step further from a worksite hand injury, which is the ultimate goal of hand protection in the first place.
CARE AND CONTENT Our C&C tag, which indicates washing instructions and fiber content, is located on the inside cuff of all our gloves.
WASH WITH CARE HAND WASH ONLY DO NOT BLEACH TUMBLE DRY LOW HANG DRY (INDOORS) LINE DRY • Gloves marked “wash with care” are machine washable. The number inside the symbol denotes what temperature to wash the gloves at (e.g., machine wash with care at 30 degrees Celsius). Washing with care can be done by changing the machine cycle, using a different preset wash program (gentle/delicate), and being sure not to overload the washing machine. • When washing by hand it is important to use a soap and/or detergent that won’t irritate your skin. Also, be sure to wash gloves over a sink or outside, and rinse thoroughly.
COMPANIES WHO PROPERLY LAUNDER THEIR GLOVES CAN INCREASE LIFESPAN BY UP TO 300% Laundering removes harmful chemicals, perspiration, and everyday grit and grime that can weaken protective fibers and seams.
