WHAT WE DO...

ENTERPRISE MUSIC SCOTLAND

Foreword HELEN MCVEY

EMS is the national body for chamber music, making chamber music activity happen across Scotland

EDUCATION & OUTREACH

PROMOTERS

EMS supported over 90 education workshops during 2012-13, as well as training opportunities for musicians wishing to deliver workshops. Our workshops are delivered all across Scotland and are not only accessed by Primary, Secondary, and ASN schools, but also in hospitals, community groups and in partnership with many Instrumental Music Services.

EMS represents over 75 organisations across Scotland who are actively programming and promoting top quality chamber music concerts.

MUSICIANS EMS publishes the annual Tours Book listing national and international performers available for touring in Scotland and provides professional development opportunities for ensembles including the Creative Exchange. NATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC DAY NCMD has been running for 3 years with 70 musicians performing annually in unusual locations all over Scotland. Our aim is to promote chamber music to the public and for promoters to raise awareness of their clubs locally. RESIDENCY PROJECT Each year a new ensemble joins the EMS Residency Project which mentors an ensemble over two years culminating in a tour featuring a new piece of music specially commissioned by EMS.

NEW MUSIC EMS centrally commissions a new work annually in collaboration with the Residency Project and also works closely with member promoters to assist with commissioning, touring of new works and promotional activity. CONFERENCES Conferencing events such as our international chamber music conference ‘Chamber Music Matters’ and music education conference ‘Music Education Matters’.

Welcome! Thank you for choosing to be part of the very first Music Education Matters Conference conceived and curated by Enterprise Music Scotland. This one-day event promises to bring together both the informal and formal sectors of music education and to shine a light some of the many examples of best practice in music education here in Scotland. We all share a vision — that music education matters. Today is an opportunity for us to share our own experience of this vision; to talk about what works, what doesn’t and why we must collaborate cohesively as a sector to ensure provision is enabled throughout Scotland. The National Youth Arts Strategy (2012) sets out a clear mission: “To establish Scotland as an international leader in children’s and young people’s arts and creativity”. I believe that every delegate here today is part of this mission and it is through all of our collective best work (irrespective of sector, funding model or geographical location) that this mission will be achieved. I hope that you find the programme sufficiently engaging, interesting and challenging to sustain us all in this endeavour and to reaffirm what we already know — that Music Education Matters. Enjoy!

Choice of sessions:

Paul Harris, one of the UK’s leading educationalists, looks at strategies for making teaching groups an imaginative and absorbing experience for all. He will discuss the Simultaneous Learning approach to group teaching and ways to maintain total engagement. Paul Harris After studies at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of London, Paul Harris has now established an international reputation as one of the UK’s leading educationalists. He has over six hundred publications to his name dealing with a vast array of subjects concerning music education. His Music Teacher’s Companion (co-written with Richard Crozier), won the UK’s MIA Best New Book award and his latest book, The Virtuoso Teacher, has been received with great interest. He is the creator of the Simultaneous Learning system of teaching and writes regularly for many of the major international music magazines and is in great demand as a workshop and seminar leader all over the world. He is an examiner and adjudicator and is frequently asked to take part in national and international events. In 2010 Paul was appointed Lecturer in the Principles of Education at the Royal Academy of Music in London and more recently has been appointed visiting professor at the Conservatoire in Denmark. Paul’s innovative teaching techniques have found support all over the world and combine thoroughness, imagination and practicality, the defining qualities of his outstandingly successful work.

Sound beginnings — sound understandings This practical workshop will demonstrate the importance of a structured musicianship programme starting in early years, and will focus on how to establish the essential building blocks of early year’s music education and how these can be used as a springboard to further learning throughout the primary school and beyond. Lucinda Geoghegan Lucinda is Education Director for the National Youth Choir of Scotland and her work increasingly includes Staff Development training across Britain presenting workshops on Kodály musicianship and methodology. She also works as theory and musicianship lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland working in both the Senior and Junior departments and since 2011 has also been delivering and assessing RCS accredited Kodály modules to external students. Lucinda is a regular tutor for the British Kodály Academy, a guest lecturer at the Kodály Institute in Kecskemét, Hungary and has delivered workshops in Ireland, Germany, Holland and Singapore.

The Connected Classroom This session will look at the increasing need for teachers to work collaboratively with colleagues across Scotland and beyond. Andrew will deliver a demonstration of building a full functioning department/faculty/school website in 20 minutes! — during the process he will screencast the entire process and the video will become available live on a newly created site at the conclusion of the session. He will show how to enrich the site using the latest content and approaches and will talk delegates through various ways they can collaborate in the cloud and work with teachers worldwide. He will conclude with evaluative survey software and the power of feedback. Andrew Dickie Andrew Dickie studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formally RSAMD) and at the Royal College of Music. He is currently the Head of Expressive Arts at Paisley Grammar School and Principal Verifier for Music at the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

SESSION FOUR

Born in midst of the Black Forest in Freiburg, Germany, Tobias got involved in music from an early age. Soon a keen choir singer, Tobias never limited himself to one style of music, but explored all aspects of singing – be it in a chamber choir, the award-winning Jazzchor Freiburg or Mongolian throat singing and beatboxing. He started his first A Capella group whilst studying music education at the Musikhochschule Trossingen. Tobias sang as bass and vocal percussionist for more than a decade with the Grammy award-winning Swingle Singers, recording six studio albums and performing more than 700 concerts alongside some of the world’s greatest orchestras and artists such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Pops, Zubin Mehta and Jamie Cullum. As their former artistic director, he initiated and led many projects and collaborations recently creating the world’s first beatbox choir, the “Vocal Orchestra”, with beatboxer Shlomo. His arrangements and voices appear in the forthcoming Monty Python film Absolutely Anything and were featured in T-Mobile’s 2010 “Welcome Home” campaign which has been viewed more than thirteen million times on YouTube. His arrangement of “A Fifth of Beethoven” was used in the pilot episode of FOX’s hit series “Glee”. Tobias is co-founder of the European Voices Association and the London A Cappella Festival and teaches all over the world in places as far as Italy, Singapore and Kenya. He adjudicates festivals like Vocal Asia, the UK Beatbox Championships, The Voice Festival UK and the CARAs (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards) and is a soughtafter collaborator, most recently touring with Bobby McFerrin “VOCAbuLarieS”.

An Introduction to Composition

Pitch, Pulse and Magic!

Dr Oliver Searle will work collaboratively with a live ensemble and with audience participation will create and perform a new work in one hour! In this session, composer and educator Oliver Searle will demonstrate a range of techniques that can be used to begin composing, with reference to a wide variety of acoustic music. Live demonstrations of many of these musical techniques and concepts will be given by a small ensemble of musicians who will provide the opportunity to create and perform a short work using ideas discussed in the session.

Pitch, Pulse and Magic is a new Live Music Now Scotland project, specially designed to introduce Primary school age children to high quality live music. Each child has the opportunity to experience three linked interactive performances over a school year by different instrumental ensembles with each in turn concentrating on the themes of ‘Pitch’, ‘Pulse’ and the ‘Magic’ of music.

Dr Oliver Searle Oliver has written works for the Paragon Ensemble, NYCoS, Hebrides Ensemble, Psappha, Red Note, BBCSSO, NYOS, and the RSNO.

Awarded a silver medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and the 2004 Mendelssohn Scholarship, Oliver’s works have been performed at festivals and throughout the U.K. and internationally and broadcast in Europe and Asia. In collaboration with Drake Music, Oliver composed Technophonia, a New Music 20x12 London Cultural Olympiad commission nominated for a Royal Philharmonic Society Award and a British Composer Award. Oliver currently holds a lecturing post at the RCS and is working on a music theatre project for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

The Pitch, Pulse and Magic session will be presented by Carol Main and Daniella Keenan, LMN Scotland Director and Assistant Director, together with flute and guitar duo Duende who were involved in the development of the project and its delivery at 39 schools in its first year. Duende will showcase musical excerpts from each of the three linked performances alongside specialist activities from Pitch, Pulse and Magic. Live Music Now is the largest provider of live music to the UK’s welfare, educational, justice and health sectors, with a unique resource of specially trained musicians. Duende was privileged to be part of Live Music Now for several years, giving concerts and education workshops over the whole of the UK and on occasion further afield. The duo combine their diverse musical influences in order to fuse together programmes with an eclectic repertoire that includes classical, contemporary, flamenco and celtic traditional.
